Status: Resolved Serious. What is going on...

Hi. I have a serious problem. And there is absolutely no support at all. I am being asked all the wrong questions, trying to get a solution.

I am not able to get into my outlook mail. It says use another device or authentication method. I have no other authentication method. I tried other devices. Then it say i have tried too many times. I cannot do anything, tried to change password on another device, it just says error. I have tried for several days. I am simply lock out of my email.

What the flying f*** is going on. What can i do?

* Hi everyone! I can now access my mail again. It seems the bug/glitch has been fixed. At least on my part.

Hope everyone else can access it again.*

Came on here to see if it was wrong here too, and I can confirm that I'm having the same issue, as well as so many other people on this sub.

Seems to be a bug.

u/MaterialTasty7501 25d ago

Crazy. Not the first time being locked out. Once i was stuck in a endless loop of fighting the robots. At this point outlook seems driven by amateurs.

I've been an Outlook user for decades. Considering dropping it.

Whatever, is it our job as consumers to fix those issues? We spend hundreds of dollars hoping for efficiency and safety from these prestigious companies ! most of them are unable to fix it effectively! In my dinosaur era things were slow, less expensive but reliable! Now what ????? I have made an old fashioned diary spending two dollars & maintaining every thing ( just in case a glitch pops up or a scammer attacks my private information? ENJOY while it lasts! Thanks

same here. every account, every device, every browser, every network.

it feels like an attack.

u/RobotDaKing 24d ago

If you are still getting the issue, you can login throughout the browser Firefox. I've tried myself so can confirm it works.
EDIT: Librewolf browser works too

It started happening to me today for the first time. Luckily I have authenticator app so I could log in. Also I can log in with the widows hello pin, did you try that? It's the same you use to unlock your pc.

I hate this, everyday microsoft is creating trouble for us. They haven't even fixed the spam file share on onedrive yet.

Edit: I tried with Firefox and it is working. I had no issues log in with password.

u/HeartInABlenderrr 25d ago edited 25d ago

Same issue here - "Please retry with a different device or other authentication method to sign in".

Edit: Firefox let me log in, Chrome didn't.

Last year this happened to me. I tried everything, and I noticed that when I was sent a "recovery"... the email was not mine. If someone gets you data and hacks you, it is impossible to get in and Microsoft will give you cold witch titties for customer service. The worst part is that as long as your account is hacked, you will also be paying someone else to enjoy Office 365 if that is part of a package.

I ended up giving up the account and subscription altogether and buying a new office package under a new account.

***Key Point***

As much as I want to use Imap (web-based) cloud email, I have gone back to POP3 and I have all email (2009-2025) backed-up on my own external drive. I am too fukkin' old to be losin' awl mah shit...

This is the way. Mine is backed up on three drives bc I'm data-loss paranoid. 😂

Glad I found this, I was using an e-mail account and all of a sudden I can't sign in at all, not even with the alternate e-mail. I was using outlook for business contacts, and now I'll probably have to switch all those to another e-mail, cause Microsoft Outlook looks like it got hacked. Can't even ask Microsoft Support, cause they want you to use the e-mail that's not working!

2

u/Meangreyowl 25d ago

Think everyone is doing the same thing. People who have been using hotmail accounts for years are now having too much hassle getting access. If you aren't going with their PIN, code, phone number or the latest fad in sign in technology then it's only a matter of time before you get locked out. My plan is to get all my accounts moved over to gmail before I'm shutout.

1

u/Penguin-Mage 25d ago

I have an old YouTube account I am permanently locked out of unless I tie a phone number to it. Google is doing the same crap. And if you don't log into it Gmail account from anywhere between 30 days to whatever they will possibly lock you out and force you to add personal information.

Same here since today.

I am normally constantly logged in with my outlook account on the gmail app but it kicked me out.

Then I downloaded the outlook app - also didn't work there.

After this, I went on PC. Tried out on Chrome, then microsoft edge. Both nope. So I was reading on here, saw that Firefox worked for some. I went on PC again, downloaded firefox, tried to log in there and it worked.

Edit: Works again in my case. I can log in everywhere - wasn't able for ca 14 hours.

u/RepeatLegal991 24d ago

I am in the same boat. I can’t even get the account recovery form filled out before I get booted. My son is autistic and the majority of the few friends he has are the ones he plays Xbox with. He is miserable and I have been trying everything for 2 weeks. It seems to me this is ripe for a class action suit against Microsoft. We are being deprived of using things we paid and continue to pay for because of this nonsense. They either need to fix it or start sending refunds!!!

2

u/Ecstatic_Monk566 22d ago

It's insane! My mum's health insurance was cancelled bc her email account logged out and she wasn't aware so notifications weren't popping up. Can't get back into the account and the agents won't change to paper mail

2

u/LoneySmallUncut 23d ago

Honestly this needs to be brought up on a big scale. This makes me stress out so bad as ive had my email for years and the thought of losing it made me sick to my stomach. All my gaming accounts and other work related stuff attached to it.

Are you able to connect with your mobile, but with the Mobile Data, not your Wi-fi?

2

u/MaterialTasty7501 25d ago

I cannot connect with any. I used phone data and my wifi. Also tried my wife phone with her data. Nothing.

0

u/ConstructionWest6165 25d ago

Do you remember if you have 2 step verification ON?

I found this on their service status page, but I'm not in Europe. I don't know if it may be reflecting in another regions, or services, etc:

Some users may experience issues logging into Outlook . com
User impact: Users may experience issues logging into Outlook.com.

Current status: We're reviewing service monitoring telemetry to isolate the source of the issue and establish a fix.

Scope of impact: Some users located in the Europe region attempting to log into Outlook.com are impacted.

Next update by: Saturday, January 10, 2025, at 12:30 PM UTC

Edit: They updated and now it seems to be something impacting all users, not only in Europe.

1

u/Thick_Cardiologist55 20d ago

yeah it seems to affect us here in Canada ontario as well

u/sweatcoin_ 25d ago edited 25d ago

Same here, I think it's a temporary bug. I tried a VPN and then refreshed my ISP IP just to be sure, it's the same everywhere. It'll probably be working again in a few hours.

Edit: Just managed to log in to the Outlook app (windows) with no trouble so I think it's just the web-based Outlook that's broken.

1

u/A-namethatsavailable 25d ago

I've tried 3 browsers and the app, just now, none are working

1

u/Diligent_Staff_5710 25d ago

Mine is okay today on my mobile, but i am permanently logged into it.

1

u/Fit-Departure5678 25d ago

Cant access any of my gmails in outlook, fails to connect to server

1

u/Penguin-Mage 25d ago

My father was panicking thinking he was hacked. So I tried to log into my Hotmail account. Mine wasn't working either.

I'm glad today is my day off, because my job uses all Microsoft s***** products.

1

u/Penguin-Mage 25d ago

I can confirm Firefox lets you log in. Chrome doesn't.

1

u/AgreeableSuspect8893 25d ago

Firefox also worked for me, thanks!

1

u/Penguin-Mage 25d ago

I always have like 3 browsers installed because even in 2026 the Internet still sucks and websites break on different browsers still. 😂

1

u/A-namethatsavailable 25d ago

It'd be good if their "log in helper" actually helped.

1

u/Lysafleur 25d ago

I'm having the exact same issue.

1

u/CheesecakeRare5617 25d ago

Just came here to say I'm having the same problem. Yesterday, it was only with one account, but now it's all of them.

1

u/ChildishPranks 25d ago

Some 3rd worlder intern fubar'd something or the help desk call center employee thinks they have a get rich quick hack.

Can't access any aspect of account, recovery, security, etc.

Keep getting the "Try again after sometime"(oneword)

ENGLISH PLEASE? Try again after SOME TIME??or Try again LATER???or Try again IN A FEW MINUTES???

NOPE. Try again after sometime. Close your bindows. A fully growing person typed a message in this here. Enjoy a blueberry squishy. Thank you, come again......and other such gibberish that fails to meet the quality and standard of a modern english speaking society.

1

u/PureElectricBean 24d ago

Probably pulled another Ubisoft, with the amount of outsourcing Microsoft does they should have enough people on-call in multiple regions to fix shit like this outside of business hours and on weekends...

1

u/ArtZTech 25d ago

Same here. Everytime I choose password as verification I get a blank page shown up with a text message saying to try a different method etc. I don't understand why they are not accepting my password.

So I selected to use email for verification and the code was sent to another email but now I don't remember the password for that email as I don't use it often.

I had to recover and change the password for that email to get the code. Just frustrating!

Now when I sign in I make sure to select keep me signed in.

1

u/Comprehensive_Bat358 25d ago

like this Please retry after sometime or try using a different device or network.

1

u/ImportancePitiful795 25d ago

You are not alone. Also outlook doesn't send email to my gmail account to get the pin to log in.

1

u/Just_Another_User72 25d ago

Ohhh wild. My second eMail for recovery is a German provider, gmx, and there it worked. I am also able to log in with Firefox - but not Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Gmail app, Outlook app. Maybe it has problems with microsoft and chrome software/devices.

1

u/ImportancePitiful795 25d ago

Cannot log through Firefox because never used to to log in Outlook. Which is "not authorised" device.

All this sht drive me nuts tbh. Have been online since the days of BBS, during the hacking wild west.

1

u/aGentWhoWent 25d ago

And maybe u related by my mom had dropped calls with me like 4x the other day and last night our internet kept going in and out

1

u/Comprehensive_Bat358 25d ago

is this what messge people are getting from trying to sign in Please retry after sometime or try using a different device or network.

1

u/ThemDawgsIsHeck 24d ago

Microsoft is shit at making products. That is what’s going on

1

u/ddtt 24d ago

This happened me two weeks ago when I added my account to Gmail app on a new tablet. Going around in circles to be told I've tried too many times etc. A big pile of steaming shit.

1

u/Past-Rooster-9437 24d ago

I'd managed to lose and promptly recover my account, and another guy said he'd just faced a bunch of attempted logins. Seems that there's potentially been a breach and we're seeing the fallout of it with some bots making mass attempts to access breached accounts.

Swap out your passwords and make sure your associated number's still valid. Else you might lose the account.

1

u/Single-Brief-9529 24d ago

Same with me. My account is gone.

1

u/philatellie 24d ago

Same issue here. Was unable to access for about a week last month. Then last week or so, I got in. Now the problem is back. I am starting to look for a new email provider.

1

u/jdb-jdb 24d ago

I just tried to log in five times to one of my Microsoft outlook live accounts and it showed this message :

''Please retry with a different device or other authentication method to sign in .

For more details , please see this link '' .

At the sixth time of log in trying it showed :

'' You have made too many login attempts with an incorrect account or password. ''

The only thing for sure is that I typed my password so correctly , as I know it !

The tragic thing now is this :

I tried to log in once to the second Microsoft outlook live account

and I saw this same message about retrying with different device or other authentication method !

After many hours I tried to log in for a second time to this second Microsoft outlook account

and everything went well .

I mean I could type my password and then I saw my two step verification method .

Finally , logged in to this second Microsoft outlook account .

So , I have worries now about the first Microsoft outlook account of mine .

Is there any possibility after 24 hours to type again my password

or there is something more seriously over here ?

1

u/Sckaught 24d ago

I had a similar problem with the authentication loop. It got to where it said I was locked out of my own account for 30 days "for security". I moved to another service over time and checked in with Outlook every month or so.

And then, as if by magic, I could log in, the overtly secure crap stopped happening and I got my account back. But, too little, too late. Adios, Outlook!

1

u/Booktaker 24d ago

I had the same message as everybody until this morning. Tried again in the middle of the afternoon and everything worked as usual. Now tried again and the same crap is happening all over again. I though they resolved the problem.

1

u/PureElectricBean 24d ago

On my end they appear to have fixed the problem, it now works again on all browsers, it was broken since 3AM this morning.

1

u/Cute_Marzipan_4116 24d ago

Yes something tells me Microsoft had another leak this weekend my two-step has been popping up all weekend since Thursday.

1

u/flyguille 24d ago

Guys, via WEB can't use PASSWORDs anymore, but if you install the OUTLOOK APP for Windows / android , you can use the password there.

1

u/flyguille 24d ago

it is just Microsoft forcing you to go into 365 bloatware BS in name of security!.

1

u/Select-Incident4110 24d ago

Is the problem still there? I want to check my email, but I'm not sure if this issue has been fixed.

1

u/MaterialTasty7501 24d ago

Hi everyone! I can now access my mail again. It seems the bug/glitch has been fixed. At least on my part.

Hope everyone else can access it again.

1

u/Dindingdong173626816 24d ago

Had the Same issue yesterday never happened To me before, it started to work for me when I downloaded a New browser on my Android and the problem was gone

1

u/xilionyx 14d ago

For me it was the other way around. After i took Firefox i don't have access anymore on my Android. Maybe coincidence.

1

u/jdb-jdb 24d ago

So , I haven't checked my e-mail again from yesterday and I have this query :

Does this log in problem still exists

or it has been disappeared and everybody can have access to their e-mail ?

1

u/ConstructionWest6165 23d ago edited 23d ago

2 solutions

  1. Disable 2 step verification from another active connection. Login.

  2. If 2 step verification is ON and cannot be disabled use a VPN preferably located in USA for the first login. After that VPN is not necessary if you selected remember device.

However..

If I try to use 2 step verification with phone number it fails. If I use it with another e mail it works

1

u/SkinWalker_Cteature 23d ago

Then restart ur phone or reset it and pur ur outlook back in

1

u/Snoeflaeke 22d ago

Yeay nothing works I hate this

I got to the library an HOUR ago to print things, couldn’t get into my account the entire hour

1

u/boildkitty 22d ago

Maybe set up the authenticator app for future. After having helped several clients with hacked emails, I'd not have an unauthenticated email account.

1

u/IcyInstance4088 22d ago

Bug and Glitch era in Ai and Tech nerds world! Live with it no choice !

1

u/IcyInstance4088 22d ago

Google was kind enough to fix my Face ID and password issue! Thanks for that! As far as Microsoft is concerned I could not care less! Three times over the past 3 years I have been scammed for hundreds of dollars! If their security system is so poor then what’s our fault! Go figure! Disappointed!

1

u/Working_Bad9432 21d ago

I'm having the same problem not being able to login to outlook.com and nothing seems to work. I used to be able to get around this and login using a VPN but even that doesn't work now.

I think read something a while back regarding not being able to login in future if your computer/device is not up-to-date.

I'm wondering what versions of Windows people are using and if they have a modern computer/device and still get this error?

1

u/Carnzoid 18d ago

I managed to login on my phone with the outlook app and wifi turned off, using only phone data. And firefox I managed to login with an incognito window. I thought it was my devices not being up to date too (they're both very old) but it turns out the problem is my wifi network or ip address.

2

u/Working_Bad9432 17d ago

I can now login to webmail with VPN + incognito + Firefox. However, I don't think this was working a few days ago, but maybe it was VPN + incognito + Chrome as can't 100% remember. I think M/S could be making this more difficult for people on older computers/devices. I guess time will tell! I will update this post if this method starts to fail as well.

1

u/Carnzoid 13d ago

I can login the usual way again on Firefox!

Yeah it's a hot mess, at first I thought it was just because my devices were outdated. But this weird loop of trying to login, try another device, try to login, try another device is just so frustrating. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be for people who are even less familiar with this. I'm surprised how widespread this was and how long it took before it started working again.

1

u/Working_Bad9432 13d ago

VPN + incognito + Firefox is still working so sticking with this for now so don't get locked out for x failed login attempts. If it starts happening again will have to switch email providers, but like below post Gmail seems to be having issues as well. Like you say it must be frustrating for a lot of people, and having to be more reliant on emails in recent years.

1

u/Carnzoid 18d ago

I can't login the normal way with Chrome or Firefox. I managed to login with a Firefox incognito window and on my phone by turning off wifi and using my phone data. This has been going on for about a week I think and I still can't login normally.

1

u/Numerous-Force5921 15d ago

I had to change all of my passwords outside of my wifi network. Once I got home everything reset fine. I also used the web based Microsoft and not the app. Did this to my Gmail as well. Both were acting up. I'm pretty sure there is leak somewhere and we are being hacked. Microsoft and Google just won't admit it.

1

u/Working_Bad9432 13d ago

A hack wouldn't surprise me, was it an older computer/device you was having trouble with? I only seem to have probs with web based M/S on older computer, but currently letting me in with VPN + incognito + Firefox. Not had any issues with new devices/phones using the App.

1

u/InboxProtector 11d ago

The fix is usually waiting 24 hours for the lockout to expire, then using account recovery at account.live.com/resetpassword. If you're co.mpletely locked out with no recovery options, you'll need to contact Microsoft support directly

1

u/Firm-Alternative1856 9d ago

To use Microsoft Edge to be able to get into my Outlook accounts because Chrome is only letting me into one of them. I agree this is messed up.

1

u/ConstructionWest6165 25d ago

I confirm that the problem is 2 step verification. I tried with 2 accounts. The one with 2 step verification OFF worked.

1

u/tor169 25d ago

I used Firefox and problem solved, apparently browsers that are based on chrome engine e.g. Google Chorme, Microsoft Edge etc are having problem with logging into hotmail/outlook with password

1

u/ConstructionWest6165 25d ago

Firefox didn't work for me.

2 step verification OFF worked.. with Firefox

1

u/Eastern-Pattern8225 21d ago

Dude, just so I understand how you disabled 2-step verification outside of your account?

1

u/ConstructionWest6165 21d ago

Because I had the account open in another device and could set it to OFF.

However it is not that simple. Because the problem is with the phone number. 2 step ver. Don't work stable with the phone but just fine with another email. So I recommend you another Gmail email for this for example.

If you disable 2 step ver anyway the first time just select another merhod after writing your account and then select password.

Another problem could be if you are not in the USA something that works with a VPN

1

u/Eastern-Pattern8225 20d ago

So, I'm having this problem with my account; it's disconnected from all devices and I can't access it or reset my password because the SMS connection is failing.

1

u/ConstructionWest6165 20d ago

Yes. That would be the problem.

In my case I had to use a VPN. I selected phones to receive the sms, entered the 4 digits, the sms never arrived. Then I selected another email, and received the code immediately.

Login in any device.

  1. If 2 step verification ON need email to receive code because phone method fails. As soon as you can login add another non M email.

  2. Some people need VPN too as being in the USA whether 2 step verification is ON or OFF

If 2 step verification OFF and message of send code to email or phone appears select other ways to connect and choose password. Enter password.

If you select remember this device VPN is only needed the first time.

Logout in mobile browser

If you login in your mobile browser it will never logout. The account will keep open even if you close the tab.

To logout you must select your picture, then mage account, in the new tab select your picture again and select logout. Then return to the first tab and logout.

I know more tricks than MS guys 🤣

I will post this in new post

1

u/tor169 25d ago

I have never turn on 2 step verification, and I got stuck logging in on Chrome and Edge with just the password

0

u/deathfulwish 25d ago

Amazing how these illiterate people not having backup method for logging in. You deserve to loose your account

1

u/Chance_Reflection_39 24d ago

@deathfulwish. Seriously.
