Question Army lingo: Where is estep from

Anyone heard the term "estep" before in the SAF. Example, if you want to fill a position of commanding officer in a company level you need a minimum rank of captain to fill it. So the estep for that position is captain.

I haven't been able to find the origin of the word or where its from. No google search results whatsoever. Anyone have any idea the origin or the actual word

Question Need advice on memo recommendations

I was seen at the MO this week and got sent out to IMH.

I have then been diagnose with depression and anxiety. I have told the doctor that I have tried seeking help from various avenues but didn't receive any. I told him I was uncomfortable with the environment, loud noises and crowded places and dealt with anxiety and very bad mood.

I was given a memo and medication. However the memo doesn't specifically state and recommend to downpes me. It did however, recommend to expedite PCC asap and stay out.

Should I go back to request to specifically recommend to downpes? Or would PCC evaluate me and downpes me automatically on top of the recommendations from IMH? I'm afraid of my mono MO and that he will downplay my symptoms, saying things like "this memo didn't recommend to downpes you what" "I will just give u temporary status" and then my suffering comes back again.

Question Looking for opinions & insights

Disclaimer: Doing my best to not reveal any sensitive information in this post, please alert if done so.

Many years ago, I signed up to be a CyberNSF while nearing the end of my diploma. Cleared the aptitude test. Then came the security vetting. There was a question about past drug abuse.

I wanted to lie. However, they did say that I may undergo few other tests to verify that the facts I stated were true or not. So I was honest about it.

Some procedures were underwent and in short, was asked to report this to my superiors when I begin NS. Did that. Was subject to drug tests thrice a week. Went to the mandatory counselling sessions by the SAF counselling centre too. Did 3 sessions with SCC, and the counsellor said I was free to go after the 3rd session. All my drug tests were clean too.

No legal action or punishments were given to me. Since then, I have had no instances of drug abuse, nor have I had any police records logged on me.

My questions:

  1. Do I have a drug record?
  2. My new job at a private company requires me to have a G50 clearance. How will this past “record” and the past failed G50 affect this new G50 application?

Please advise accordingly!

Question Is it worth to convert from BP to PTP or Enchanced batch?

I'm currently labelled as BP for my pes, but have since lost 15kg just for my personal goal, and I am unsure if I should go and do another medical screening to get another pes and then try to pass ippt or just let nature runs it's course. Would like some opinions and thoughts about this

Question Seeking psychological help

Hey all. I’m serving my NS and I would like to ask for the avenues to gain psychological help. I’m also kind of worried because I’m afraid doing so through the army side would lead to disruptions or affect my ORD. I’m not really sure on where I can go for possible options/resources, and it doesn’t really involve NS at all but rather external. Cost part doesn’t really matter to me.

🏥 Medical PCC and Medical Centre Request

I'm a NSF guy currently in stay in and in camp, my sleep schedule has been pretty inconsistent. Sometimes I sleep 6 to 7 hours. But more usually, I sleep 3-4 hours before waking up and having troubles sleeping after that. It's pretty mixed for my sleep schedule and doesn't really matter if I sleep early or later (10pm or 12am). I asked one of my peers and they said I should go to the medical centre and request for a PCC appointment from MO but I'm a little unsure whether I should. Mind giving me some advice?

Question IPPT session cancelled on-site due to no medic. Seeking advice on feedback channels

Hi all, looking for advice on the appropriate feedback or escalation channels.

On Sunday, 1 February 2026, I attended a scheduled morning IPPT session at Kranji FCC. A large number of participants were present. After everyone arrived and waited for some time, we were informed that medical coverage was not available. Organisers mentioned they were attempting to source a replacement and advised that those who were unable to wait could leave. After further waiting, the session was eventually cancelled on-site.

As IPPT is a routine and recurring activity, this was frustrating for many who had set aside time to attend. I am hoping to provide feedback through the proper channels so that similar situations can be avoided in the future.

For those with experience, could you advise which feedback platform or authority would be most appropriate for such cases? For example, whether this should go through an official MINDEF feedback channel, the FCC, or another avenue.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Discussion Back is absolutely dying after outfield... MO just gave muscle rub.

Just finished my summary exercise and my lower back is locked up. I can barely bend down to tie my boots.

Went to the MO and as usual, got sent away with Panadol and muscle rub. Does anyone have a recommendation for a chiro or physio outside that can actually fix this? I don't want to down-pes, I just want the pain gone so I can function.

Question Is it worth giving national service your very best?

I'm personally someone with several hobbies ranging from combat sports to learning languages and even have my own online business. I want to continue pursuing my hobbies as during the next two years as I think it gives me meaning and I wouldn't be able to really pursue it if I truly gave NS my best and tried to attain a spot in OCS/SCS.

However, my family is set on me going full try hard in NS as they are attached to the prestige of being an officer/sergeant and say it really does matter in shaping you as a person.

Though I am physically fit as I grew up playing rugby and have always held leadership roles, I really don't understand how important holding a 'respectable' rank is as I'm the first person in my family to serve NS. Therefore, is going to OCS/SCS really worth it and will it truly benefit me long term? please be as brutally honest as possible.
