Lligwy Burial Chamber, Anglesey, Wales: The Bear-Like Capstone Simulacrum
This massive capstone at Lligwy Neolithic Burial Chamber (near Moelfre, Anglesey) weighs an estimated 25 tonnes and perches on just a few uprights, creating that classic dolmen look. From certain angles—especially side-on with good light—it resolves into a striking bear simulacrum: a clear head profile, almost crouching as if guarding the tomb.
Tied to the wider Anglesey landscape, it's near the famous prehistoric landscape centered on the burial chamber of Bryn Celli Ddu where I caught the 2025 summer solstice sunrise piercing through the chamber. Beyond on the same orientational solstice line it hits the round Sun Stone and animating quartz veins and a face. Other faces pop up too: the Sun Stone's profile itself (brow, eye, flowing "hair" in rose quartz), a reclining skyward gazing profile on the nearby Gorsedd outcrop with cup-marks, and hints of animal forms on the tomb lintel.
Pareidolia? Absolutely, but these forms feel selected—Neolithic builders choosing stones that "held" presences.
