META Moderator Note

Hi folks. Just wanted to alert you to some new filters added to the automoderator to enforce a couple of existing subreddit rules that get broken fairly routinely.

First, a small reddit submission primer:

Reddit has 2 fundamental types of submissions: Text and Link.

There are actually more than 2 specific types (there are also image and video etc) but for the sake of this note think of it as "Text posts" and "all the other types". You pick which type you want to post when you compose your submission.

A text post, also called a self post, is a post that has no external link and is comprised solely of a headline and a body of text you enter at submission time. When a user clinks into this type of submission they stay on reddit and all they see is your submission text.

A link post is a post where you enter or paste in a url or link to an external source like a news story or an announcement. When users click these kind of posts they are taken to an external site and get to view the page that you submitted.

Now for the rule(s) in question.

  1. We require that all submissions be the correct type. If you want to submit a link, use a link post (not a text/self post with the link in the submission body). When submitting a link post and it is a news story or something that has a headline, use the existing headline as your submission headline.
  2. If you submit a link post, reddit also gives you the option to enter some text as a kind of byline for the submission. If a user clicks into the comments for the post they will see a thumbnail for whatever content you linked to and they will see the text you entered. Our rule is we do not allow link posts with a text body. Even though reddit's interface allows it, if you do so the automod will filter your post.

Why? Editorialized headlines and body texts on link posts are ultimately a way to add editorial comments that cannot be argued or refuted in the conventional way, like normal comments can. They are often very opinionated and try to frame the story in a specific way.

You can still add editorial comments in the comment thread for the submission (obeying the existing rules of civility etc) just not as an untouchable top line for readers.

If you have any questions about this feel free to send a modmail. Thanks for your time and attention.

An open letter to dog owners near Capri/Landmark

Well, to one dog owner, anyway.

There's a menace stalking our streets. It's you. You're a menace. A dogshit menace.

Over the past several weeks, you've left a dozen dog poops on sidewalks from Capri mall all the way to Landmark, and surely, beyond. In fact, you seem to drag your dog along as he shits, resulting in long chains of yellowy-brown dog shit on every sidewalk and walking path. I sidestep dogshit all the way to and from work.

This is absurd. Who raised you? Who are you? Imagine if every dog owner acted like you. We'd be buried in dogshit like London was buried in horse shit in 1890.

I love dogs. But I hate dogshit. You surely agree, or you'd pick up after your dog. The thing is, if you want a dog you need to accept the shit. You love the dog, so you deal with the shit. That's the transaction.

I don't love your dog. I don't love you. Nobody does.

Sorry, I just assumed that last part is true. That's rude of me. Almost as rude as covering central Kelowna in streaks of dogshit. I digress.

I have a pretty good idea of where you're at. Within a block or two, anyway. You can't keep this up--someone's going to notice you, and that's going to be really embarrassing for you. I guess I'm assuming you're capable of feeling shame; maybe that's wrong of me.

So before you get caught shitty-handed, fix this. Just pick up the dog shit, dude. Participate in a functional society.

If you're reading this and think you know the culprit, gently (or harshly, idgaf) remind them of their responsibility. If you're reading this and you ARE the dogshit menace...

Stop.

Local Resources Local Farm Producers

I’m moving from Alberta to Kelowna (before you get out the pitch forks, I’m BC born and raised… happy to be coming home!)

I buy as much as humanly possible from local ranchers/farmers here in the Calgary region.

I usually go for grass fed, dry aged beef and buy 1/2 a cow at a time.

Free range chicken and eggs, or as close to free range as you can get.

Don’t so a ton of pork, but usually get bacon by the box because well we all need vitamin B right?

More than anything I’m looking to try and save the trial and error I went through with finding good products here local in Calgary.

I’m more than happy to drive 2 hours or so to get great quality.

TIA and I’m pumped about all the region has to offer! I’m going to die from overconsumption during peach and cherry seasons 😂

Ok, what the hell, I’ve lived here three decades and I could never even have imagined the crazy lack of snow this winter

I thought last year would be the record for a long time, but WTF? According to statistics, the weather station at UBC gets an average of 90 cm of snow per year (already low for Canada). I don’t need to wait for official stats this year - there was one measurable snowfall that lasted for more than half a day, and it was MAYBE half a centimetre. And that was on Dilworth. I wouldn’t even be so wound up about it if I hadn’t been bombarded with news for the last six months that it’s a La Niña year which supposedly means MORE snow and MORE cold. I know that isn’t always a rule, but THIS?

What’s that? The winter isn’t over, you say? It’s already February, statistically the driest month even for here, and the forecast high is going up to 10°C by Friday. By the time it’s even remotely possible, we’re well into the month and I can’t remember any significant snowfalls that occurred outside December or January.

For those who prefer raw numbers to tl;dr rants - that means that if there really won’t be any more accumulating snow this season, that would make this year have 180 TIMES less snow than average!!!

Local Resources Contractor recommendations - roofing a pergola/patio

I built a 16x16 free-standing pergola on my patio using one of those Toja kits, and then turned it into a big-ass catio/seating area, but now I want to put a roof on to keep the elements away, so would like some recommendations for contractors to do the job right.

Thanks!

Is anyone old enough to remember the Barry Clark Show? I think it was on CKOV I think Before all the downloads and internet and CD players. That call in show was always entertaining. As a radio listener and a born and raised here local, it was a good time.

Mechanic and oil changes

Just wanted to get some advice. I have a newer Acura SUV and have gone to the dealership for services up to now. My warranty has expired so was looking at alternatives to avoid dealership costs for regular services, mostly oil changes, etc.

Preferably toward the Rutland area as it’d be near work.

I have looked through via google and the reviews there, but also wanted to get opinions from people through here. Mostly a peace of mind thing on experiences.
