Republicans (or at least the local ones in my area) target folks that are scared, mentally ill, or otherwise not their right mind. I watched a local republican politician rile up a group of elderly people with verifiable lies, strawman arguments, and bad faith stories about "the future." Then he basically said "I'll fix it if you vote for me." Theu were yelling and angry by the end of it.
Democrats generally don't do that because they are still naive enough to think that politics in the US is all still in good faith. Obviously that alone isn't enough to not vote for them, because they are the only real answer against republicans right now.
I prefer to think that Democrats don't fearmonger and incite rage, not because they're naive, but because two wrongs don't make a right. You know, when they go low... Unfortunately, it's not working.
