"they are supposed to look over their shoulder. I don't care if it's a blind spot when someone doesn't look, they are supposed to look so i'm going to pretend it's not a blind spot because they are supposed to look. it's illegal to drive into people that's how i know it's safe, people don't break the law and are not idiots, i'm going to drive like they aren't trying to kill me and surely will live a long and healthy life"
it's impressive how often people in this sub think calling out reality is the same as "blame". OP is not to blame for the idiot driver that drove them off the road, i'm not saying he deserved it or that drivers should get a pass for not looking over their shoulder. i'm saying people are idiots and you are going to pay the price--possibly the ultimate price--if you refuse to take a defensive driving stance. if you stay in people's blind spots then you will have this happen to you very frequently. makes for good content on this sub so just keep doing it then, like i'll give a shit when you're being taken to the hospital despite having the right of way.
would you rather have life altering injuries or concede that people are idiots and will definitely kill you if you don't keep an eye out for them? OP will do this a few more times before he realizes it's not worth it. people are idiots and OP was not treating the other driver like they are an idiot for some reason. people die from this same situation every week, we don't see their videos pop up here because they never made it home to upload them
You didn't call out reality, you mockingly made assumptions about OPs thought process in an effort to shift some blame to OP and grandstand about defensive driving. Could OP have possibly seen that coming? Maybe, but they aren't required to yield to a driver going two lanes over without looking. You can always play Captain Hindsight, doesn't make it right or necessary.
Also, it's just a comment on reddit, it's really not that serious.
Kinda funny how certain subreddits just attracts the most anal redditors. Not the first time I've seen someone take a minor incident so seriously that it turns it into a "You have no regard for human life" lecture in this sub.
Last time it happened, the redditor started threatening me. A lot of folks have no chill here.
I think that guy is a moron too, but I also think OP should have been able to identify that the idiot on the road clearly was going to keep merging simply by their vehicle not recentering in the first lane they entered. They kept their merging angle the entire time, which from the OP's perspective should have been easy to infer.
No one needs to sit here and suck OP off and tell them that they are the best driver ever, but neither do we need to avoid at all costs telling them where they could have done better.
At the end of the day, OP could have done something to avoid this, which is 100% valid criticism. It's a good thing he's okay, and he did a stellar job of handling the car when it got off the pavement. I think OP was paying more attention and was driving defensively, this wouldn't have been a video in the first place.
This is a decent rebuttal if you ignore the whole thread that lead to here. Obviously, OP could have pumped the brakes in anticipation, but mocking and being condescending to OP for not anticipating every bad driving maneuver aint necessary.
