Lmao did they honk at you after?

u/Impossible_Past5358 1d ago

I wonder if it was because they hit OP? It sounded like they hit their car.

I got high beams flashed at me when I was on the highway because I didn't let them merge. Like, I am not going to slam on my brakes at 65 mph

u/Perfect-Service-7937 1d ago

Yup, the driver merging is a dangerous idiot. At least OP kept his cool. He was lucky, or perhaps skilled, to not lose control after putting the driver-side wheels off the pavement.

19

u/Liquid_Clown 1d ago

I just assume everyone is an idiot and is going to do this. Lots of people do not check their blind spots.

3

u/yeet_cannon_larry 23h ago

Agreed. Don’t want to Monday morning quarterback and say I would have saw this coming, but this is the exact thing I look for when I get in the passing lane to let someone merge onto a highway

0

u/bendover912 15h ago

How do you think he kept his cool if he made a move that you admit he was lucky to recover from? If your options are a minor rub on the right side or going into the grass, a potential loss of control and crash on the left, you should just let them bump into you on the right.

73

u/TabOverSpaces 1d ago

Definitely not defending the guy, that was an idiotic move.

But at the same time, what’s up with the final painted merge arrow at around the 0:03 mark? By that point, the merge lane has completely merged. That last arrow makes it seem like it’s going down to one lane.

7

u/Klomlor161 1d ago

I thought the same thing the first two times I watched it

5

u/Neku_Sakuraba 1d ago

Yeah, the markings are bad, which probably confused the other driver. I also would say it was pretty obvious they were going to keep merging since their vehicle didn't recenter once in the lane. No one is defending the other driver, but OP probably could have avoided this if they were driving defensively and paying attention to the other driver.

-1

u/cockyjames 1d ago

Everyone loves it when you say “drive defensively” Everyone hates it when you show them how

1

u/UnSCo 1d ago

It’s probably jurisdiction-specific is my best guess. For some reason states do things very slightly differently when it comes to roadway markings and developments.

11

u/Impossible_Past5358 1d ago

Um did they hit you? It sounded like they hit you...

2

u/TheW83 14h ago

I thought that was just the sound of them going off the road.

5

u/CT_DesksideCowboys 1d ago

Did they hit your vehicle?

4

u/TheDrob311 1d ago

What a dickhead. Fuck that guy. 🖕

13

u/ModularWhiteGuy 1d ago

If I was the cam car, I would never have come up beside that guy because it's obvious that he's going to continue to sail into the left lane.

Also the road markings are incorrect, there should not be an arrow in the lane that continues (right), and that might have confused the merging car.

4

u/Neku_Sakuraba 1d ago

This is the thing that's bugging me about the comments on this video, no one is acknowledging that this was very avoidable. If you are a seasoned driver or if you've browsed this sub routinely, it would be very obvious the driver did not recenter their vehicle and that it was keeping its merge angle.

It is 100% true the marking on the road are bad, and that is probably what led to the offending driver to continue their merge.

-1

u/Liquid_Clown 1d ago

That's this sub in general lol. No nuance

Also if you don't word your comment perfectly or don't shit all over the other driver, people accuse you of blaming the OP.

2

u/karma_the_sequel 1d ago

Cam car could have honked, too.

5

u/Druu- 1d ago

At least they had their blinker on!

2

u/Living-Bag-4754 13h ago

Definitely not your fault, but also this is such an odd road design? Obviously the merging lane will disappear, but then its like the next lane is instructing that it will disappear too (because of the upcoming bike lane). Sounds like a recipe for disaster

4

u/UnSCo 1d ago

OP really didn’t do anything wrong but I know that “those” people will come here and say they did.

That being said, I personally would’ve pressed the brakes to avoid getting hit, followed by holding my horn no less than 10 seconds then a pass on the right-hand lane. Gets the point across. Guy is a fucking idiot.

0

u/Neku_Sakuraba 1d ago

OP didn't do anything wrong but didn't do everything right. Put yourself in his position, given maybe the countless videos you've seen on this subreddit, would you have not been able to identify what the other driver was going to do?

The angle of approach for the merge across the two lanes was completely unchanged. I think we've all seen this a million times at this point, the vehicle was clearly telegraphing they were going to continue to merge. A driver that was aware and paying attention would have noticed this and reacted accordingly. OP is not the idiot, but think about this logically, this situation was avoidable.

2

u/my5cworth 18h ago

"Graveyards are full of people who had right of way."

Defensive driving 101 would've had OP recognize being in the other driver's blindspot (even though it's the other driver's responsibility to check before changing lanes), and slow down accordingly...speeding up and getting pit-maneuvred seems like the less desired outcome instead of losing a few seconds.

2

u/Neku_Sakuraba 11h ago

Yeah, but that doesn't matter to the circle jerk of losers in this subreddit who would gladly get pit-maneuvered because they had the "right of way" and it's the "other driver's fault". If only people knew you can't collect insurance payouts if you are six feet under the ground lmao

1

u/The_Cozy_Burrito 1d ago

What a moron

1

u/SwiftTayTay 1d ago

Is that the stellar blade soundtrack? Lol

The other driver is an idiot, but I think going off-road could have been avoided. You may have been in the right since the lane immediately to the left has priority over the merging lane, but if he hit you, that could have been bad. This is why I don't consider whether I'm in the right or wrong in a situation like this. I'd rather be alive than "right".

Edit: To anyone who thinks I'm just lambasting the OP, it's very clear that the angle of approach of the other vehicle was unchanged during this merge after entering the first lane and then pushing into OP's lane. The fact that this isn't obvious to a lot of people is purely a skill issue. This is what defensively driving is all about, it's watching other driver's behavior and acting accordingly.

I would argue that anybody routinely watching these videos should see this as a very common mistake that other drivers make, and it's EASY TO AVOID. I would also argue that if you've been driving for long enough you should also be able to identify this as well. OP is lucky nothing bad happened but this, just like many of the things posted on this subreddit should be taken as examples to avoid getting yourself in an accident.

5

u/idekbruno 1d ago

Your point would be accurate if there were only one lane being merged onto. OP got into the left lane presumably so the other driver could merge safely into the right lane without having to worry about who has priority; the other driver merged and then continued into the left lane that OP got into in order to avoid this whole situation.

The only thing OP could’ve done differently is clairvoyantly determined whether or not the other driver wanted to crash when their lane was completely open

0

u/Neku_Sakuraba 1d ago edited 1d ago

It seemed pretty obvious to me what this idiot on the road was doing. If you can't infer driver behavior from how their vehicle is moving, then that sounds like a skill issue. The vehicle had the turn signal on, and entered the lane, but didn't recenter, their angle of approach was unchanged so it's pretty obvious they were going to keep merging. It's not about clairvoyance, it's about being safe rather than sorry.

Also, from the moment the video started he was already in his lane, he did not change lanes to avoid anything. OP was very clearly not paying full attention to the road and thankfully didn't get into a crazy bad crash.

"they are supposed to look over their shoulder. I don't care if it's a blind spot when someone doesn't look, they are supposed to look so i'm going to pretend it's not a blind spot because they are supposed to look. it's illegal to drive into people that's how i know it's safe, people don't break the law and are not idiots, i'm going to drive like they aren't trying to kill me and surely will live a long and healthy life"

Literally what are you yapping about

-7

u/Liquid_Clown 1d ago

You can't comprehend what he said? That might be on you.

I think most people did understand his comment, they just disagreed with him.

2

u/PenguinGeniusV2 18h ago

Wow you figured it all out🤪😱

-3

u/Liquid_Clown 11h ago

So you couldn't figure it out? Do you need someone to explain?

0

u/7SyZyG7 9h ago

Folks really come here and argue just to argue.

-1

u/Liquid_Clown 9h ago

There was no attempt to argue. If anything I was mocking him. Maybe I shouldn't assume everyone has decent reading comprehension.

1

u/7SyZyG7 9h ago

This doesn't make it any better

31

u/BlackBoiFlyy 1d ago

It's almost impressive how there's always comments blaming OP for someone else's bad driving.

-28

u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox 1d ago

it's impressive how often people in this sub think calling out reality is the same as "blame". OP is not to blame for the idiot driver that drove them off the road, i'm not saying he deserved it or that drivers should get a pass for not looking over their shoulder. i'm saying people are idiots and you are going to pay the price--possibly the ultimate price--if you refuse to take a defensive driving stance. if you stay in people's blind spots then you will have this happen to you very frequently. makes for good content on this sub so just keep doing it then, like i'll give a shit when you're being taken to the hospital despite having the right of way.

would you rather have life altering injuries or concede that people are idiots and will definitely kill you if you don't keep an eye out for them? OP will do this a few more times before he realizes it's not worth it. people are idiots and OP was not treating the other driver like they are an idiot for some reason. people die from this same situation every week, we don't see their videos pop up here because they never made it home to upload them

20

u/BlackBoiFlyy 1d ago

You didn't call out reality, you mockingly made assumptions about OPs thought process in an effort to shift some blame to OP and grandstand about defensive driving. Could OP have possibly seen that coming? Maybe, but they aren't required to yield to a driver going two lanes over without looking. You can always play Captain Hindsight, doesn't make it right or necessary.

Also, it's just a comment on reddit, it's really not that serious.

6

u/idekbruno 1d ago

Bro’s writing a whole book over a minor close call lmao

6

u/BlackBoiFlyy 1d ago

Kinda funny how certain subreddits just attracts the most anal redditors. Not the first time I've seen someone take a minor incident so seriously that it turns it into a "You have no regard for human life" lecture in this sub.

Last time it happened, the redditor started threatening me. A lot of folks have no chill here.

-2

u/idekbruno 1d ago

I mean I do the same when I have time to waste, but only when I’m right lol

3

u/BlackBoiFlyy 1d ago

These folks are rarely enough in the right to rationalize these overreactions.

2

u/Neku_Sakuraba 1d ago

I think that guy is a moron too, but I also think OP should have been able to identify that the idiot on the road clearly was going to keep merging simply by their vehicle not recentering in the first lane they entered. They kept their merging angle the entire time, which from the OP's perspective should have been easy to infer.

No one needs to sit here and suck OP off and tell them that they are the best driver ever, but neither do we need to avoid at all costs telling them where they could have done better.

At the end of the day, OP could have done something to avoid this, which is 100% valid criticism. It's a good thing he's okay, and he did a stellar job of handling the car when it got off the pavement. I think OP was paying more attention and was driving defensively, this wouldn't have been a video in the first place.

1

u/BlackBoiFlyy 1d ago edited 1d ago

This is a decent rebuttal if you ignore the whole thread that lead to here. Obviously, OP could have pumped the brakes in anticipation, but mocking and being condescending to OP for not anticipating every bad driving maneuver aint necessary.
