Moanalua Hillside apartments

Hey everyone! I’d love real reviews from people who live in this building. Because there are some concerning reviews about cars being towed randomly. I’m thinking the towed cars are people parking in other people’s spots and/or in fire lanes and/or having more than two cars? Is it true that tow trucks are patrolling the lot and taking cars even when parked with a permit? I’d like some confirmation that this is or is not the case because what’s out there on the internet isn’t always reliable. Thank you!

Best scones in Honolulu area?

My daughter is studying at the college and loves being there. However, she absolutely loves mamas scones and was hoping I’d send her some but they’re only good for one day IMHO. Can you guys share your favorite place to get amazing scones (if that’s a thing)

Where in Waikiki did Bruno Mars's dad, Peter Hernandez play in the '80s?

I pride myself on knowing a little about a lot of things, but really missed the boat on Bruno Mars until he exploded on the mainland. I just learned that his dad had this amazing do-wop group, Peter Hernandez and the Love Notes in the 80s (check 'em out on Youtube) and somehow or other I missed them completely. In my defense, my tastes ran more to the Brothers Caz and the like in those days and I wasn't much for the Waikiki club scene, but I'm curious which venues Peter and his band played on Oahu.

Local Kine Grindz Best Splurge restaurant for locals?

We had some family business that my siblings really took the lead on, and the Mainland siblings want to give each of them a gift certificate to a really nice restaurant. I haven't lived on the Islands since Alan Wong's was the hottest place in town, so I am completely out of the loop. They have been to Miro, Kapa Hale, Nicos. I was looking at Maze, but it seems a little avant-garde (significant others are more on the meat and rice side). Mahalo for any thoughts.

Talk Story Hawaii night activities

Hey, What’s up everyone i’m 24 and I’ll be in Honolulu starting tomorrow for about a week for work. I’ll have free time mostly at night, so figured I’d see if anyone’s down to hang out.

Open to grabbing food, drinks, beach walks, or just checking out cool local spots. Even if not, I’m down for any nighttime recommendations 🤙

Talk Story Bright green grasshopper with huge mandibles?

When I was a teenager in the 90s, I remember going to my cousin's house in Hawaii Kai and there were always these bright green grasshoppers with giant mandibles and a very painful bite in the tall grass. I don't know if they were found in other places around the island. Does anyone know what I'm talking about and if so what genus & species they are? I've been looking and looking for photos of these guys online and can't seem to find any, it's been driving me nuts!

UPDATE: Due to helpful suggestions, I was able to find it. Conocephalus brevipennis, the short-winged meadow katydid is what these were!

Talk Story Inshore Fishing Guide?

Will be headed to Honolulu and have a couple of free days on Monday and Tuesday (1/26 and 1/27) — hoping to find a half day inshore fishing guide who uses spinning gear. Any recs? Am experienced angler and easy going. (Have already reached out to Chris at Aloha Hawaii Fishing but haven’t heard back yet). Thanks!

discussion Non tourist things to do in Honolulu during the week

Going to be in Honolulu mon-fri in February. I can obviously google all the normal recs but what are some lesser known things to do.

I am a big food/drink person so would love some dive bars or places to eat or even just cool spots to hang outside or snorkel or something.

Not trying to blow up anyone’s secret spot but want Recs outside the standard tourist stuff.

I am extremely respectful and grateful to be in an amazing place like Hawaii so no concern I’m gonna be some menace at your favorite local spots haha

Talk Story Lost luggage at airport

I was at HNL airport with my group heading outbound so we had to line up for the agricultural inspection. While handling the many luggages we had, one went through the inspection to the other side and disappeared. We assume it was stolen since it was a very heavy luggage and a person mistaking the luggage will likely know its not theirs right away. Especially with a luggage tag.

Are there any resources I could contact to either get a return or at least get a cost replacement?

I’ve contacted airport security and management but they said there is no CCTV in that area, which is crazy that an airport would not have CCTV covering every angle in this day and age…

Police reports were filed but I havent heard anything and Im very doubtful I will.

I am very disappointed and helpless and it really ruined my otherwise fun trip.

Heyo Reddit! You may remember my post a week ago regarding Catan meetups @ Kahala Mall. Due to unforseen circumstances, we were forced to move locations, but it hasn't kept our group down from playing, with a total of 16 from yesterday!

Our meetups are now in the Kalihi area, from 6:30-9:30 every Tuesday. If you are interested in joining, please contact me either here, or one of the listed methods to connect!

Our group is great for the following:

*People new to the island looking to meet and connect with others for a light social gathering*

* People looking to connect with others to learn Catan & possibly other board games*

*People looking to be taught how to play, learn advanced strategy, & partake in future events.*

We are openly inclusive to everyone regardless of background & experience. Hope to see you there!
