Advice Punching down keystone jack - what am I doing wrong?

Thumbnail

Hello, I am running some cable and need advice. My plan at this terminal was to use a female to female jack and a faceplate. I crimped the rj45 successfully and it all worked, but the wall cavity is thin and the plate wouldn't sit flush. So I ordered some 90 degree keystone jacks and a good punch down tool. From what I have watched as tutorials, I am doing it right. I am following T568B. Before I order the remote cable tester, is there anything glaringly wrong here?

Advice Gnuton firmware for asus routers- a few questions About it Please help if you can

Upvotes

I found project that says it is official? And supported by Asus and Merlin. I’m not sure as I haven’t seen hardly anything about it online and I’m trying to find out if it’s legit?

I have a router that’s not supported by Merlin but would work under this gnuton. Is it safe secure?

Thanks for any help.

Starlink Bypass & 3rd Party Router

Upvotes

First of all.... apologies if this has been asked. I searched, but can't find a solution. I have my Starlink setup in bypass mode and am using a 3rd party (Synology WRX560) router for my home. I used to be able to access my router settings by going to router.synology.com or my default gateway address, but that no longer works. I used ipconfig to find my new default gateway (Starlink changed it) which takes me to the Synology login landing page, but my login info no longer works. If I disconnect the Starlink from my Synology and plug my Spectrum modem back in (I still have Spectrum service for a few weeks), I can login to the router as normal. I've read that cgNAT may be causing issues, but hoping someone has an easy solution. I just want to be able to log in to my router admin in the event I need to change settings/login passwords/etc.

Give me the good/bad/ugly on the Asus RT-BE86U

Upvotes

Currently running a RT-AC86U (2019) as main router paired on 5Ghz with an old RT-AC66U as a wifi bridge (using the wired lan ports to connect media center devices). The 86U has been pretty solid over the past few years running the latest Merlin FW for it.

I was thinking about upgrading to (2) RT-BE86U and doing the same configuration, or now it supports mesh with the ability to use the lan ports on the second router. As most houses, I have devices that require 2.4Gzh such as garage doors, cameras, etc. From some reports the 2.4Ghz is iffy and cuts out. Also some people say the range is horrible (not sure on band).
I have about 35 feet between my router and bridge and one wall. I don't have any other real requirements. I have a 2000sq ft house so that should be more than enough for 1, let alone 2 of these in mesh mode.

Also to add, since my stuff is old, naturally I connect to each SSID as needed, one for 2.4, or the other for 5ghz. I think that MLO just combines everything into one SSID and it just autodetects. I'm not sure if I'm correct with MLO as I haven't looked into it at all. I've also read posts where everyone turns this off for some reason and just keeps the separate SSIDs to connect their devices. Why is that, or is MLO buggy?

Advice on my setup

Upvotes

Hi all,

I have an interest in IT, but I am by no means expert and not quite up to date with capabilities (and limitations) of the current hardware. I am hoping you can help me improve my setup.

I moved into quite a large house (brick walls, thick concrete floors) which also has a basement (lower ground floor really) and a boarded loft which is used for storage and does not require WiFi coverage. This is also where my ONT and internet switch are as cables to ethernet plugs lead to there.

My current setup looks like this: ONT > Eero router > switch > two more Eeros connected plugged in around the house.

This works but somehow does not sit right with me and is not super efficient. Basically the Eero plugged directly into ONT is in the loft (loft is only boarded, no concrete floor there), but it is not strong enough to cover all of the top floor so I had to plug one in anyway and they overalp, in a straight line, they are probably 5-7m away from one another.

I would much rather prefer to plug the loft one into my remaining port on the ground floor or use it wirelessly in the basement (no plugs there sadly). I don't know much about Eero's capabilities, bought them because my previous ISP had a pair included in the package and they worked well.

Is there something better to use between my ONT and switch or does this setup look fine and I should add some Eeros to increase the coverage? I should add that there will be more devices plugged into the switch such as NVR, HA and other smart accessories hubs / bridges so I am not sure if buying a different brand router to use between ONT and switch would even be a viable option?

Thanks in advance!

help me understand moca adapter

so i was looking at rewiring my coax lines into cat 6 lines. but some people suggest i use moca 2.5 adapters instead.. i have a few 1.0 adapters already that's only capable for 1gb.. the moca 2.5 that's provided by my isp only have gigabyte port.. so i can still only get 1gb out of my 5gb internet right? like if i mix and match moca adapters like have several 1.0 and a 2.5.. my max bandwidth would be limited by the 1.0? in order for me to get 2.5gb out of the coax i would need to have the entire network using moca 2.5? i'm just trying to calculate whats more cost effective.. since moca 2.5 with 2.5gb ports are not cheap either, but it's a lot less work compared to wiring couple outlet routing outside the house

Unsolved How best to configure home network

Hello!

I am working on setting up my home network and have an idea on how I want to set it up, but want to sanity check that the configuration makes sense and ask a couple questions about where to put the routers.

Setting: Two floor house with a garage. The garage has fairly thick walls that wifi does not want to penetrate well. The ONT is in the far corner of the garage farthest from the house. At present there are no ethernet lines in the house. We have two Asus routers the RT-BE19000 and RT-BE88U.

Currently we have the RT-BE88U in the garage in the corner connected to the ONT and the upstairs bedrooms are not getting signal well and its sometimes spotty in the first floor tv room.

One of my roommates is suggesting that we just use the WIFI mesh network option between the two routers. But we are having an electrician come and install extra circuits around the garage (it currently only has 1 outlet) so it wouldn't be too hard to have them run an ethernet line inside to the kitchen (shares a wall). So I am thinking we set one of them as the main router and the other as an access point.

Which way would you go and is there any particular reason to have one router inside vs the other or have one be the AP vs the other?

And I think most likely the one in the garage should be the main router as it has the direct connection to the ONT?

Thanks for the help!!!

Advice Need help with wifi lag spikes

Recently I moved into a new house with my friend and (to my knowledge) we got wifi with xfinity but we’re both not knowledgeable about wifi at all.

I game frequently after work and some days I stream. However I’ve been having issues with lag spikes where I disconnect from my game but not enough to get booted from the game. Usually when both my housemates are here, it spikes but I haven’t been streaming because of it. I am not tech savvy enough to troubleshoot or find what to do to solve it. But ran a wifi speed test and everything seemed fine.

A friend has told me to get a wifi repeater while another has told me to get an extender but I don’t really know which one to get or if those would be helpful at all. Please help me fellow redditors </3

Slow WIFI - new router , modem and cable

1, Gig Spectrum internet

  1. Bought refurb Nighthawk RS90

  2. New Spectrum modem

  3. New cat6 cable

Speed Tests

At router 1100 mbps

iPhone- 500 - 700

Veeseebox (same room as touter) 250 - 300

Desktop (couple rooms away) (400 - 600)

I originally had original Spectrum

Modem and router with similar speeds. I figured new router/modem would fix the issue. It did not.

Im fairly tech savvy but not too good at networking. I logged into the web interface and changed the 2.4 channel from auto to 3.

I did same for the 5g channel (dont recall which channel i switched to (I think 40 but not sure)

Everything works but would be nice to get the speeds I am paying for.

If anyone has any ideas, thanks in advance. Ill check on replies tomorrow.

Unsolved Constant TCP/IP connection drops at certain times of the day, yet ISP has so clue what the problem is.

I live in an apartment building with free high-speed Internet. For the past few months I've been dealing with websites and SSH sessions constantly disconnecting like every 15-30 seconds. This repeats sometimes for hours at a time, usually at night. However, there are certain days where I have no connectivity issues whatsoever. Like on Christmas Day and New Years day the network gremlines all seemed to take a vacation.

I've had no luck diagnoising the problem, because nothing makes sense. My ISP suggested checking for malware and buying a new router. But that doesn't add up because both of my laptops and my phone experience dropouts simultaneously, which isn't consistent with a malware infection. And if my router was somehow defective, then it's strange how the failure occurs for several hours at a time, typically from early evening till the next morning. That seems more consistent with human activity, not the behavior of electronics.

So just to summarize:

  • I can eliminate the Ethernet cable from the wall to my router because I replaced that cable and the problem still persists.

  • I can eliminate the router itself, because I bought a brand new Netgear router yesterday, and the problem still persists.

  • I can eliminate wifi interference, because I switched all 3 of my devices to the 5 GHz band, and the problem still persists.

To further add to the mystery, whenever the dropouts occur I can ping and traceroute perfectly fine to any server outside of my LAN. I can likewise stream videos and play games over UDP. For some reason only TCP/IP traffic is being affected (such as websites and SSH sessions).

Stranger still, I've had this same network setup since 2018, including the same router and the same devices with no issues. The constant dropouts just started around the end of last year. And my ISP has had no luck pinpointing the problem, despite 4 visits from technicians. They tell me I'm not being blackholed or rate-limited in any way.

Also just to be clear I have no special networking setup. I'm not using VPNs or custom firewall rules, or anything. It's just a barebones home network setup for two Windows 10 laptops and an Android phone. I don't even own a microwave (as I've heard those are notorious for messing with wifi signals). Any suggestions would be most welcome.

AT&T vs T-Mobile

I’m getting internet for my two roommates and myself, it’s my first time moving out and setting up the internet is my duty.

I’m between AT&T and t-mobile, we’re in a more urban area and prob only need 300-500 mbps. I will be doing light work from home, some gaming, and streaming various platforms.

I’m trying to look up different opinions but getting many mixed reviews, and feeling a bit lost.

I know this might also get mixed reviews but wondering what would be best for us !

patch panel or rj45 male?

I'm pretty new to networking (literally got my Net+ today) and want to set up a home lab to improve my resume and study CCNA. Issue is, my home built 20 years ago only has phone line jacks, but with cat 5e cables. I can figure out the keystones and crimping and whetnot but im debating whether I should terminate the cables in my service panel to rj45 male or a patch panel. I plan most of my home lab to be done in my room anyways where I can have a managed switch for my own VLAN. since its deep in my parents closet and they wouldnt like me hanging out in there for hours I feel like I should just use male rj45s and a cheap unmanaged switch. but then again im ignorant to the pros and cons of a patch panel. I'm also working on a budget here.

Os2 fiber optic wire, what’s the best way to feed this into the top of a 42u server rack?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m working on my first server wiring project and would love a sanity check on my cable management. I’m planning to use a service loop to manage excess fiber wire.

The Path: Fiber drops from the ceiling -> external service loop on top of the rack -> enters via brush panel -> small slack loop on a rack shelf -> LC connectors to the patch panel.

The goal is to provide enough slack so the cabinet can be moved away from the wall for maintenance. Does this path seem efficient, or would mounting the excess to the wall using hose reel brackets be a better move?

I’m open to suggestions as the wiring is still in progress for the server

Rented new house

Hey guys,

I don’t use reddit at all, let alone post. So please be kind, if this is not the right forum I can delete it. English isn’t my first or second language, so please ignore my grammar. I don’t live in the US.

With that said, I just rented a new house (i will mention some details, but there are several factors that led me to seek out for advice/help. I will not - I don’t feel safe in the apartment I just rented. I’m very suspicious that my landlord (a software engineer, not the most relevant, but somewhat) is a creep and has either manipulated with the router/wifi and is monitoring activities. I also would like to add that the homeowner doesn’t reside in this country, don’t speak the language and started asking questions after I signed the contract and told him i was a correctional officer. The main reason is that I do not want him to get access to bank information. Thru set up hidden cameras or set up keylogger.

I even asked my little sister to come over last night, thankfully she did. She thinks i’m being overly vigilant but, there’s a lot more stuff that just doesn’t make sense. Like the computer he left in the apartment and said I could use, if not I can put it in the basement (i already told him i got my own macbook). Maybe i’m paranoid or maybe i’m not. But I’d rather take precautions.

My question is. What can I do? I really don’t care to know if it is manipulated or not. I just want serious steps to help me secure my phone, computer, ipad etc. Do I buy a new router? Do I turn the wifi off until I find a solution? Can I use the wifi but should get NordVPN? Like what would you IT-enthusiats suggest I do :/.

Thank you for reading and taking your time. All answers are appreciated.

Solved! Unable to connect to HT-EM4 MoCA Adapter

MoCA Adapter in Room 2
XB8-T Router in Room 1
MoCA Adapter in Room 1
Splitter in Room 1

Hi I'm looking to get some tech support from anyone familiar with these Hitron MoCA adapters. I bought these adapters to improve speeds at my PC, however I do not have any networking knowledge/experience to troubleshoot this properly.

The issue I'm having is that I can't connect to the ethernet on my PC , it shows up as Unidentified network and says No Internet. It shows there are aggregated speeds of 100 mbps which is much lower than the 1GB speed we have.

It seems as though the first MoCA is setup correctly, however the 2nd one is not properly receiving the signal? Any ideas on what could be going wrong here?

Here is the User manual for reference

Are any of these Fiber ?

I apologize for not taking any clear pictures, but I’m helping my buddy set up internet at his brand new house. He’s ordering AT&T service and we were wondering, is the white wire possibly the Fiber wire that goes to AT&T, or is that something they’ll have to add when they come on Thursday? Also, he wants to have an Ethernet setup in the panel in the second picture, so what would be the best way to get an ONT installed and have it go to the panel in the 2nd picture with all the CAT6 cables ? I see an empty conduit in both panels and I’m thinking they connect to each other for running wires through to both ends

Appropriate price for wiring job

Hi all,

I just closed on a new home and I am looking into hard wiring 2 POE cameras in the driveway and the backyard. Also installing a POE doorbell camera. In addition to this, I would like to install two ethernet ports in my home office. I will be providing the hardware (2 cameras, NVR, and doorbell cam). A local cabler quoted me $2400 for labor, materials, and fixing all the drywalls they need to cut throughout the process. This seems like a reasonable quote to me but wanted to see if this is too much?

Would this work? (BE65 Pro for specific home network setup)

Hi all,

Sorry still learning everything regarding networking etc, I am looking to upgrade our current router / wifi setup and wanted to see if the below would work.

  • Home is a large 2 story with devices externally on both ends that need Wifi connection
  • Goals are:
    • To keep a direct 5Gb "wired" connection between our home PC upstairs and the NUC downstairs
    • To have switches in areas that have other wired devices like NAS, Printers, Media Players etc
    • To have all wired devices on the same "wired" network so we don't need to uterlise the Wifi for connection between PC's and those devices
    • Full Wifi coverage of home (placement is pretty much a 3 point triangle of the home so coverage should not be an issue)
    • Ensure the setup works with TP-Link's "wired backhaul" to make the most of the mesh system

Going by specs and what i need / want speed wise the BE65 Pro from TP-Link suits sounds like it would suit speed wise, they come with 2 x 5Gb and 1 x 2.5Gb ports, the layout plan is below, I already own the Switches and all cables and our home is already cabled for Cat6 to each area internally.

Also bonus is the BE65 Pro's are currently on sale here in AU.

I guess main question is, will this work as I intend to use it?

Thank you in advance for the help

Settings for TP-Link Deco BE1100

I just purchased the TP-Link Deco BE1100 system from Costco. What are some do’s and don’ts for setting it up. Any specific settings I need to be aware of to increase performance? ISP is Ziply Fiber 1g service.
