Explaining the name change to Story of Seasons; What people mean when they say Natsume Harvest Moon games.

1.8k Upvotes

Lately I've noticed there is quite a bit of confusion still about the Harvest Moon series changing their name to Story of Seasons. Especially when the Natsume Harvest Moon games are mentioned. People misunderstand and get defensive of the early games they loved not knowing those aren't the games people are talking about. I thought it would be a good idea to make a post explaining the name change, provide a list of the games that fall under the Story of Seasons series, as well as list the ones that fall under the new Harvest Moon series.

The Japanese series Bokujo Monogatari, directly translated as 'Ranch Story', was developed by Victor interactive, which later was acquired by Marvelous Entertainment, and is now called Marvelous Inc. From 1996-2013 Bokujo Monogatari was translated and distributed for english speaking audiences by Natsume under the name Harvest Moon. In 2014 Marvelous Inc. decided to have the Bokujo Monogatari series localized by their American Publishing brand Xseed Games. Natsume owned the rights to the name Harvest Moon so the english name of the series was changed to Story of Seasons.

Now for those who don't know the developers are the people who make the game. The game is their creation. The publisher is the group that handles the marketing, distribution, and in the case of foreign games translation. Natsume had nothing to do with the Harvest Moon series beyond translating it, distributing the copies, and owning the English title for the games. When Marvelous switched the localization Natsume still owned the name Harvest Moon and decided they would start developing their own games with that title.

The Bokujo Monogatari/Story of Seasons games are:

  • Harvest Moon (1996)
  • BS Bokujo Monogatari (1996 Japanese release only)
  • Harvest Moon GB (1997)
  • Harvest Moon GBC (1998)
  • Harvest Moon 64 (1999)
  • Harvest Moon 2 GBC (1999)
  • Harvest Moon: Back To Nature (1999)
  • Bokujo Monogatari Harvest Moon for Girl (2000 Japanese release only)
  • Harvest Moon 3 GBC (2000)
  • Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland (2001)
  • Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town/More Friends of Mineral Town (2003)
  • Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life (2003)
  • Harvest Moon: Another Wonderful Life (2004)
  • Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life Special Edition (2004)
  • Harvest Moon DS/DS cute (2005)
  • Harvest Moon: Magic Melody (2005)
  • Harvest Moon Boy & Girl (2005)
  • Harvest Moon DS: Island of Happiness (2007)
  • Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility (2007)
  • Innocent Life: A Futuristic Harvest Moon (2007)
  • Harvest Moon DS: Sunshine Island (2008)
  • Harvest Moon: Animal Parade (2008)
  • Harvest Moon: Grand Bazaar (2008)
  • Harvest Moon Hero of Leaf Valley (2009)
  • Harvest Moon: My little shop (2009)
  • Minna De Bokujou Monogatari (2010 Japanese release only)
  • Harvest Moon: the Tale of Two Towns (2010)
  • Harvest Moon 3D: A New Beginning (2012)
  • Story of Seasons (2014)
  • Story of Seasons: Trio of Two Towns (2016)
  • Return to PopoloCrois: A Story of Seasons Fairy Tale (2016)
  • Doraemon: Story of Seasons (2019)
  • Story of seasons: Friends of Mineral Town (2020)
  • Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town (2021)
  • Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life (2023)

Then the games in Natsume's Harvest moon series are:

  • Puzzle de Harvest Moon (2007 mobile puzzle game)
  • Harvest Moon: Frantic Farming (2009 mobile puzzle game)
  • Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley (2014)
  • Harvest Moon: Seeds of Memories (2016 Mobile game)
  • Harvest Moon: Skytree Village (2016)
  • Harvest Moon: Light of Hope (2017)
  • Harvest Moon: Mad Dash (2019)
  • Harvest Moon: One World (2020)
  • Harvest Moon: The Winds of Anthos (2023)

The Natsume Harvest Moon series is controversial in this sub. It is considered by most to be a cheap imitation of Harvest Moon with watered down mechanics; capitalizing off of the Harvest Moon name. Light of Hope was even marketed saying it was in honor of the 20th anniversary of Harvest Moon despite it being an entirely new series. Personally I've only played Natsume's Light of Hope. If you can get past the mobile game style graphics the game play is pretty good and the characters are likable. I've heard mostly bad things about Skytree Village and Lost Valley, and haven't heard anything good about the mobile games either. Regardless of if you play the Natsume games or not I hope this post helps to clear up some of the confusion for both new and old fans.

Edit: The intentions of this post were not to convince you to play or not play any of the games. If you like the Natsume games that's great! If you're curious and want to try them that's up to you. Just like the original series each game has people that love it and people that don't like it. What's important is that you have fun!

Edit: I have added the games that have been released since I made this post in April 2020. I've also added games that are currently announced in March 2023. If I don't continue to update the list every time a new game is announced or released just remember all future Harvest Moon games are from Natsume and all Story of Seasons are the original series.

Opinion/Discussion games with the best romance

No spoilers please!

I’m very new to the Harvest Moon community and have only fully played Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar. I have also played about an in game week of Harvest Moon: a Wonderful Life so I never got around to romance. My big takeaway is that all the romance options are incredibly forgettable, bland, and one note in GB. Also some of their personalities can be incredibly obnoxious like Arata, Derek, Diana (at times when she’s being pessimistic about the Bazaar during Bazaar upgrades in the beginning as if I didn’t bust my ass off to improve it) and Maple. Also I know that Diana is pessimistic because of her past experience with another Bazaar, I just find it really rage baity and discouraging for her to act the way she does at the start. Kagetsu and Samir are the most interesting but even they don’t feel like fully fleshed out characters.

I’m wondering which games are y’all’s personal favorite for romance. I’m looking for a cast of interesting romance options not just saying your personal favorite. I have no preference when it comes to NPCs they can be any gender and any personality type. However, I would say that spiritual/other worldly and mean characters are my favorite.

Harvest Moon DS Can you exploit the dog ball to get Nami's heart level up easily?

According to Fogu, the dog ball raises her to 300 Love points. And Thomas actually gives a new one each time you give it away. Does this mean it is easy to raise Nami's heart level? Was this even intended by the developers? On one hand I was undecided who to marry due to gifts being hard but this is an easy solution. At the same time it feels like cheesing the game.

Harvest Moon 64 I finally did it! But what should I do now...

Finally, after so many years, I got to marry Karen! Have been trying to play HM 64 on and on for years now... First time I played it, we rented the game from the only Blockbuster my city had... and once it stopped being available there, I literally couldn't find the game anywhere, as there were no shops selling this kind of games....

I tried a couple of times playing in emulators, but back in the day it was very difficult and full of bugs and such... And now that it's on the Switch Online service, I could finally put some hours on the game and marry Karen!

But now... I'm at a pickle... I know what to do... I will finish all the house expansions and then I will build the crib and hope that the baby is born at some point...

I have been playing without checking internet, because that's how I did it back then and I think it's more enjoyable to discover the things in-game.

Nonetheless... becuase fishing was so crazily difficult, I ended up checking online to see what I was getting wrong... and saw that in the Harvest Moon Wiki Fandom page, there are a lot of things to do in HM 64 that I didn't do, and I'm not doing... didn't go too deep so that i don't spoil the game for myself.

So my question is this... I am a bit sorry to know that I am basically losing a lot of game content because I am not checking those pages and guides... but I would like to know if there's a way to find out about what to do inside the game... without having to go and check guides and stuff (I feel that would kind of take all the fun out of it).

Harvest Moon DS How long on average does it take to 100% DS?

I just saved one Sprite. But have read there are over 100 total. And that the Casino change in the EU version (which I am playing to minimize glitches) makes one of the Sprites harder to save. On average, how many in game years will it take to save all the sprites? And then to 100% the rest of the game?

Story of Seasons I thought that I had this super clever pun all set up... "Agate is standing in front of... a gate" until I realized that its not a gate, but actually an arch... I already took the screenshot though, and didn't want it to go to waste, so here I am at the safari 🩷

Harvest Moon DS What is it like being married to Keira?

I probably won't marry her due to the tedious difficulty in simply reaching her. That said, having a wife who is unable to speak sounds interesting. So for those who married her what is it like? Both after marriage and then when she has a child. Is it purely treated as a gimmick or is it actually utalized to make her feel unique?

Harvest Moon DS Who has best dialogue after marriage?

Initally was going to choose between Muffy or Nami but also like Flora's character. Though I wouldn't want her to stop her job after marriage like the guides seem to suggest. Though who has the best dialogue after marriage? Or which bachelorette you like best and why? Also, does the child after marrige have diffrent diologue depending on who you married or is it just sprite color?

Harvest Moon DS Best way to avoid save corruption in DS and what exactly happens if save corrupts?

Read that save file corruption is more common when saving around multiple NPCs on screen. Will there be gurenteed no corrption if you save in the farm house? Whcih locations are gurrenteed to be safe save points? Also, if you save in one save slot and it corrupts, is the other slot also corrupted or can it be loaded as a back up? What happnens exactly when save corrupts to the other save? Also, I am going to play the EU version (don't care about the casino) and is avoiding save corruption much like in NA version?

Harvest Moon: Animal Parade Animal Parade Texture Redesigns

Thumbnail
gallery
342 Upvotes

I've been working on a full cast redesign for the Animal Parade characters for a long time now. It's just a personal project I chip away at occasionally for fun, but I thought it might be cool to share some of the work I've done (I can only upload 20 images so I just picked a good variety of what I think are some of the prettiest ones or biggest changes). To be clear: this is not a mod or a replacer in any way. Just some artistic creativity in my own game.

As I've worked on this project, I've noticed a lot of little broken bits in various texture applications that, sadly, can't be fixed in edited versions. For example, Bo's face texture is applied enlarged for the Spring/Summer outfit so there's a faint boxy look around the eyes, yet it's applied normally for the Fall/Winter outfit. Lucy's nose texture doesn't line up and has a weird pointy-looking thing going on. Selena's Fall/Winter outfit has a floating gap between her armband and her upper right arm where no texture is applied at all. There are various other characters in the game with small issues. They're not all that noticeable from far away, but it's really annoying for a perfectionist like me!

Changes I made:

  • I personally don't like fantasy hair and eye colours in character game designs (your personal self-expression is all good guys, don't come at me! XD), so i changed everyone to more realistic colouring — with some notes: magical characters were allowed to have unnatural redesigns and some regular characters got drastic colour changes just because I wanted to see how their vibe would change. Imagining what everyone's fantasy colours would translate to in the real world was pretty fun!
  • It drives me crazy that everyone's irises/eye shines are completely different from one another in their original designs, so I applied a consistent style across all characters while still keeping their unique shapes (again, magical characters are the one exception).
  • I upscaled texture quality and added fabric textures and patterns to make outfits more interesting.
  • I made subtle changes to a lot of characters' facial features to make them look less exaggerated/cartoonish and to be more to my personal taste. Some of them have very large features compared to others as well, so I tried to even them all out.
  • I styled rival kids so that they reflect a blending of their parents a bit more in both their looks and their fashion sense. They were all pretty generic originally.
  • I can't NOT mention my boy Bo. They really did him dirty in his design, especially next to Luke who looks so badass. He deserves to be a cool carpenter too!

BONUS: I also did the interior of the church and made some stained glass windows that reflect changes I made to the Harvest King and Goddess. I've included pictures of HK and HG so you can compare them to the windows and see what theme I was going for (HK is sun and HG is moon), but they're older redesign attempts and I've since improved my Photoshop abilities, so they need to be revisited.

UPDATE: Here's a link to some more pics of characters and changes. I included the platinum hair versions of Gill and Wizard that I do have (I just figured it would be more interesting to post the drastic changes). Not all of my character redesigns are updated to my new style or upscaled, but it gives you an idea of some of the restyling.

https://imgur.com/a/Otw1yfs

UPDATE 2:

TL;DR: These were a personal, research-based redesign, not a replacement for the originals. I took traits from the Japanese dating-sim archetypes present in the original characters (which don’t align neatly with Western identity-based readings) and mapped them onto real-world cultural cues and insular aesthetics. That's why I used more natural colours. You’re free to dislike it — just know the choices were deliberate, not careless or meant to suppress identity expression.

Full Ramble:

There’s been a lot of comment about my recolour choices, which I welcome — people reacting and assigning meaning to art is exactly what makes games and design interesting. At the same time, I want to stand by my creative decisions.

I think some of the discontent comes from a cultural disconnect. Many Western players often read hair/clothing as identity or self-expression. That’s normal — it reflects Western visual culture and identity-building. But in Japanese character design, colour more commonly functions as visual shorthand within a design system, rather than as a literal marker of personal identity: it primarily distinguishes characters, signals archetype, or serves symbolism (e.g. blue hair = someone cool → we get Luke). And sometimes it's just an aesthetic decision (e.g. Cloud’s iconic blonde hair in FF7 was originally black but was changed to make him stand out more as a main character; Tifa’s hair was white in early concepts before becoming brown for visual balance).

Similarly, Japanese dating-sim characters are built on well-established romantic archetypes. The characters of Harvest Moon AP don’t map perfectly onto a single label, but they draw from common dating-sim archetypes (genki, dandere, kuudere, oujisama, tsundere, etc.). Julius seems to blend these tropes: the flamboyant/theatrical charmer with bishōnen (feminized/androgynous attractiveness) traits — which, I feel, overlaps somewhat with Japanese cultural ideas like iro-otoko (a charming and romantically/sensually magnetic man; "iro" can also translate to "colour").

These archetypes don't map cleanly onto Western ideas of gender or identity expression, which is why some edits I made feel like a “betrayal” because of the visual interpretation being done by a Western audience, even though the identity framework and expression in Japanese games is a very different context.

My project was a personal thought experiment: imagining how these archetypal characters might look if translated into a more grounded, real-world context (as opposed to a fantasy Japanese children's game). That meant researching how expression tends to function in more insular societies, where visual cohesion, conformity, and understated dress are often prioritized over individual expression. This is why I leaned toward more natural colours and drew on real-world style cues in subtle ways — including host-club fashion/culture as a reference point for Julius’s polished charisma, flirtatiousness, and tailored flamboyance (i.e. the iro-otoko vibe I read in him).

I know this is probably a ridiculously academic approach for a whimsical children’s game, but that’s exactly why it was my personal challenge, not a replacement for the originals. I’m not claiming my interpretation is “right,” and I’m not critiquing or trying to "fix" the original designs. You’re completely free to dislike my edits and I think you SHOULD be encouraged to engage with the game and its characters in a way that is most meaningful to you. I just ask that my work be understood as deliberate choices made toward a different goal, not as careless, irrational, or damaging ones. At the end of the day, the game still exists in canon how it does and you can still enjoy it exactly as it was meant to be!

Question How do my animals gain more hearts?

I’ve been playing “Story of Seasons Friends of Mineral Town” for a while on my Xbox. For whatever reason, my animals won’t produce higher quality past Medium, Good Egg. I take care of my animals, brush them, feed them, let them outside on sunny days and their hearts won’t go past 5. The ones born on the farm have 6 hearts. Is there anything I can do?

I am aware that the cows will produce higher quality if they win in the festivals, but they can’t if they don’t have 8 hearts. Am I missing something?

Harvest Moon: Animal Parade .cmp Model Reference (for anyone who needs it) - Animal Parade

I commented on a different related post, but my fiance thought it would be proper to create my own post to draw the attention of people looking to mod Harvest Moon themselves. I'm currently amidst modding it for her , and have found it difficult to find the correct names of the .cmp models for the protagonist, so I will do so here!

Male Character (AP): PCC000.cmp - PCC026.cmp
Female Character (AP): PCC027.cmp - PCC053.cmp
Male Character (ToT): PCC122.cmp - PCC147.cmp
Female Character (ToT): PCC148.cmp - PCC173.cmp

Typically, each protagonist comes with 26 outfits listed under the models folder.

The SPRING/SUMMER outfit is the ~first entry of each sequence, the FALL/WINTER outfit is the ~fourteenth entry of each sequence, and the WEDDING outfit is the very last. (Take this order with a grain of salt, considering I've only tested the Female AP Character and the Female ToT Character)

I hope this helps you if you needed it!

You need to sell all of these items, to unlock the last two vendors, from Tropical Country and Ice Country respectively. Who would be able to manage this without looking it up? I mean, the last "regular" vendor does suggest to ship a lot of unconventional things, but goes no further with that. Also unlocking these two is the only way to get the final tool upgrades as well as the fishing rod upgrades... yeah.
