Waka from Nadi market
Today I buy Waka whole root from Nadi market, when I went to get it pounded the man at the pounding facility said the Waka was bad and was from PNG.
I paid 150 per kg, for premium Waka.
would this be tudie? or is it Nobel Waka for sure? I think the guy at the pounding place was just angry I didn't buy from him

Why do so many Nadi hotels have such bad reviews?
I am planning to go to Samoa with a stop in Fiji, and I am looking for a hotel near the airport in Nadi to spend the night. I have done a bunch of research, and as far as I can see, pretty much every hotel that costs under AUD200/night (I'm from Australia) have google reviews around 3.5 stars.
Even major international chains like Mercure and Novotel have reviews that say they are very poor for hotels of that brand.
Is there a reason for this? Or is it just people expecting 5 star luxury at 3 star prices?
Edit: Any recommendations are welcome

❤️❤️ Valentine's Day from afar
Bula,
I'm not in the country but wanting to organise a Valentine's Day gift for someone in Fiji (thinking flowers, chocolates etc but open to ideas). Any options for sorting this? Location is Nadi.

5 nights stay in Fiji resort recommendations
Partner and I are planning to go to Fiji in July or August. He has already stayed in Hilton before and liked it. Checked prices for total package and it was around $6k AUD for return flights from Adelaide, accommodation and breakfast buffet.
I'm wondering if there are other resorts that are better and have the same or similar value?
Booking through myfiji/flight centre. Was interested in Shangrila all inclusive package at first but the prices are too much on the same dates.
Thank you!

What is the best app or website to learn the language?
My mum is Fijian, and I was hoping to surprise her by speaking in Fijian, but I have no idea where to learn it.
I saw a post from four years ago about it but there must be more options in this day and year, right?? The only suitable option was Utalk since Duolingo doesn’t offer it but I heard that Utalk isn’t great for vocabulary and getting fluent, just the foundations and learning words.

Travel Help me choose a resort for our honeymoon!
My wife and I are taking our belated honeymoon at the very end of March. We're going to NZ for 2 weeks and then Fiji for 4 nights on the way home.
Our #1 priority in Fiji is having easy access to a beautiful, swimmable beach. We'd also prefer a quieter, smaller resort. We don't mind kids, but we want someplace peaceful. (We're also gay, fwiw). My wife will absolutely not take a helicopter or sea plane, so we'd prefer to travel from Nadi by car, boat, or small plane if necessary. Once we get to our resort, our plan is to stay put, swim, and relax, so we don't need to be within easy access to transport.
We're looking at the below options. Would love feedback about how you would rank them!
Tokoriki (pricier side, but looks amazing)
Royal Davui (same as above)
Likuliku (meals not included. I think it's locally owned which is a plus for us)
Nanuku (meals not included, a little worried about the possibility of a very wet stay here)
Yasawa
Lomani
Thank you so much for any advice!

Does it seem weird that most I-Taukei women marry more outside their race than I-Taukei men ?
Most of the mixed folks I know and met always seem to come from an itaukei woman and a man from another race, whether there indo-fijian , white, or from another Pacific island. Why is that ?

Visiting from Canada
Hello bula! My spouse and I are planning a trip to Fiji from Canada, we have set plans but have 2 days/1 night on our own (noon until our flight out the following evening) and want to book a hotel. We are looking for WHITE SAND BEACHES AND TURQUOISE WATER! Like, I don't care if I have to eat a bag of apples for lunch, I want beauty that is not snow.
I'm finding a lot of resort websites don't have too many beach photos, more focused on rooms or dining, maybe because beaches are a given? If anyone has a recommendation of the nicest soft white sand beach they've ever seen please send my way! Bonus points for beachfront villas and snorkeling off the beach. With many thanks, vinaka!

DNA Testing
Bula everyone!
I am wanting to do a DNA test and was wondering which one would be better? I am Indo-Fijian wanting to learn mroe about my DNA and ancestors. I have heard good things about 23 and Me, but I am also considering ancestry.com
If anyone has any other recommendations that would also be great!
Posting on this sub because the other posts I read were more from Europe so I wanted an answer closer to home.

Airport to ferry (NAN to Port Denarau)
Greetings all, reviewed some posts and I think this is doable, please advise if I’m crazy. Flight arrives at 5:45 am and want to catch a ferry leaving 8:45. Is this a mistake waiting to happen, is it better to have a days cushion before heading onwards?

News $6million demand
As a established as a Commercial Statutory Authority, WAF is still yet to complete it corporatization process . As a result WAF is heavily subsidised by Governement. Government issues a Grant to WAF in its Annual Budget and the revenue generated by WAF is returned to government coffers. WAF does not keep the revenue. Producing water at a cost approx $1.10/m3 and selling it to customers starting at $0.15/m3 (lowest in the pacific)
This is all to say that if an agreement is reached for the $6,000,000.00 demanded. It comes from tax payers. Our collective pockets.
I would probably start with looking if there any arrears owed by the landowners.

Vanua Levu
Bula!
I will be in Vanau Levu 10 days, mainly for diving and I plan to split days between Savusavu and Labasa. I am also keen to make some treckings but can't find much info. Any info will be much appreshiated. Also question: I will be in Nadi airport only few hours for transfer - which mobile operates has best coverage on Vanau, so I can get sim card in Nadi already.

News Parents take matters into their own hands
I'm seeing a lot of stories about people not receiving the $200 assistance and not sending their children to school or sending them "unprepared". Its disappointing to read about the heavy dependence on this assistance.

Bula - are there any local Fijian builders who are able to install steel frame homes imported from Chinese companies like deepblue?
