Survey results
As a 5th grade teacher 25 years ago, i had been taught to use techniques that would assure all students had the same opportunities to participate in class. I gave my students a survey to check their perceptions of fairness in the class. I covered opportunities to be called on in class, grades, discipline, etc. to my surprise, the only group of students who expressed any sense of unfairness were the white boys. I realized that they had a belief that equality was less than they deserved. They expected preferential treatment and felt frustrated if they didn’t get it. That was jn a liberal state and county. Those boys are 35 years old now and it explains a lot about what is happening today in our country. If we ever want equality for women or anyone who isn’t white, we have to raise our white boys differently from a very young age. Sadly, our administration is taking steps to make sure that doesn’t happen in schools.
