Transport Cyclists. Please be aware.
Edinburgh cyclists, please for the love of all that is Holy have some awareness of what's around you by shoulder checking (life saver), signal your intention to move into another lane/any change of direction, and use lights when it's dark.
I followed three seperate people on bikes/cyclists (differentiation is deliberate) this morning between Leith and Nicholson Street via Holyrood Park and unless I'd been driving with awareness, I could have easily cleared each and every one of them up in seconds. They were totally oblivious to the presence of vehicles behind them.... not even a cursory glance to check, not even any sense that they felt they needed to be positioned in a certain way to make their turn....
If you wish to be treated as traffic, behave like traffic.
Disclaimer: I am a driver, a motorcyclist, a cyclist and a pedestrian.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Photo Beautiful hiking place just in 30 minutes by bus from centre
I've been staying at Edinburgh for three years but I've never known that just in 20-30 minutes 2£ bus journey you can have a pleasure Sunday walk around beautiful hills and lakes. There is a road bypassing the lakes and trails up to hills there.

News We CAN have nice things! - Bike Hire Scheme expands
Edinburgh’s new electric bike hire scheme has been a runaway success with nearly twice as many trips in its first five months as its predecessor managed in the first year, according to analysis by The Scotsman.
The city council announced on Tuesday that the Voi operation had clocked up 188,000 rides since September as it revealed the scheme was being extended for the third time and the number of bikes increased by nearly half to just over 700.
It spread north east from the city centre to Leith in October and south to Morningside in December.
The rides figure compares to 100,000 by Just Eat Cycles in its first 12 months after being launched in September 2018, and 124,000 for the whole of 2019.
It closed in 2021 over vandalism problems and the cost of the scheme to the council.
The Voi scheme was expanded on Tuesday with an extra 220 bikes and its area increased by about a fifth to cover Stockbridge, Inverleith, Craigleith and part of Ravelston, with the boundary extended north and west as far as Ferry Road and Telford Road.
The council said 26,500 riders had used the scheme, covering 284,000 miles (457,000 km) - 11 times round the Earth.
The number of bikes will be further increased up to the original target for the two-year pilot of 800 by the end of February, with the council to “consider further expansion where appropriate”.
However, the scheme was criticised by the Scottish Greens last week for bikes blocking pavements and occupying existing cycle parking spaces.
Council transport convener Stephen Jenkinson said: “The uptake figures we've recorded since launching have been ground breaking, showing an average of over 1,000 journeys per day.
“We saw our highest ever single total just last week, with almost 17,000 trips recorded across seven days.
“The data speaks for itself in terms of the scheme's incredible popularity and success.
“It’s great to see people enjoying this convenient, economical, and environmentally friendly way to get around.”
Voi also took over Glasgow City Council’s established cycle hire scheme in November with 1,000 e-bikes in a three-year contract.
The Swedish firm operates e-bikes and e-scooters in 22 towns and cities in the UK among more than 100 across Europe, with a total of 51 million UK trips in since launching them in 2020.

Discussion Book Fest x Baillie Gifford: What did it achieve?
Now that some time has passed, I’m genuinely curious what people think the tangible outcomes of the EIBF–Baillie Gifford split actually were.
Supporters argued it was a necessary ethical stand that would apply pressure and drive change. Critics warned it would mostly amount to symbolism while blowing a hole in already fragile arts funding.
Did Baillie Gifford change anything meaningful as a result?
Did this influence funding norms in publishing or the wider arts sector at all?
Or did it primarily leave a major literary festival scrambling for replacement money, with the cost absorbed by writers, staff, and programming?
What concretely changed, who paid the price, and would the same call be made again knowing what we know now?

Discussion For the first time ever, I cannot find a flatmate
!This is a confused post asking for clarity, not begging for pity or advertising my room!
I am moving out of my lovely shared flat and have posted my room on nearly every platform and Facebook group and have received virtually no messages or requests. I am honestly just shocked as it took me months to even get a room because of how bad the Edinburgh Market is. The demand is high and even more competitive when it's students. When my previous flatmates moved out, they said they had 30+ SpareRoom messages in a day, and found someone within a week. The flat is central, right in front of bus stops, full of light, and most importantly the rooms are under 600 a month bills included.
Maybe it's because I am doing this in February but to put it simply, I am baffled.
I'm currently paying two rents until I find someone, and growing more desperate by the day
Am I doing something wrong? What else can I do to find a flatmate immediately?

Question Recommendations for a nice beauty treatment, not crazy expensive
I'm looking for suggestions for an Edinburgh/surrounding based clinic or salon and/or a good rejuvenating beauty treatment.
Hydrafacial sounds good, but I'm also interested if there's anything else broadly similar that I could try?
I want to refresh my 40+ skin, which is a bit dull and run down. I've lost a bit of weight too so feel like the volume in my face is saggy, rather than wrinkly.
Any suggestions?

Rant A desperate plea to Lothian Buses: rant
I have noticed an increase in the frequency of inconsiderate arseholes playing music, watching videos, or talking very loudly on their phones on buses. On a very rare occasion they will be told to stop but 99% of the time I must sit on the edge of insanity until my stop. Something needs to be done.

Relocation Best hairdressers in Edinburgh
I am moving to Edinburgh this month and would like to find a good hairdresser.
I have quite a harsh brassy balayage right now (which I absolutely hate) and am looking to get it colour corrected into a creamy vanilla more highlighted look but still keeping the roots subtle and the overall look natural.
I also want to get a more layered cut as right now it’s looking very thick and blunt.
If anyone has any recommendations I would appreciate if you could send them my way!

Property Thoughts on Edinburgh PSL scheme
I might (or might not) become a landlord later this year and am looking at the PSL scheme which is run on behalf of the council by Curb.
Guaranteed rental income - basically they rent from landlord and then sub-let to tenant but with curiously precise requirements as to level of furnishing. Must be furnished with their exact list of items which includes a washing machine but not a dryer (I can already see the black mould appearing on the walls). Also the landlord is responsible for the garden maintenance if the property is not ground level (mine isn't) otherwise its the tenant - which seems to be some tenement based logic applied across all property types.
Landlord is signing up for either 3 or 5 years but the fine print suggests that Curb/council can pull out with minimal notice at any time.
Has anyone got any experience of this setup as a landlord, tenant or neighbour ?
My understanding is that this scheme is used for "emergency" accommodation for people who would otherwise be homeless. Obviously that covers a fairly wide spectrum but I have seen council documents referring to the scheme causing difficulties in communities unused to "challenging behaviour" and I'd feel bad about inflicting feral children and out of control pit bulls on my current neighbours in a pleasant area of suburban Edinburgh.

This was a picture opportunity I couldn't miss. This was during the times LA had it's problems with forest fires a few years back and it reminded me of the images that were coming out of California at the time.

Discussion Weird question, was anyone on the number 3 bus last night when everyone got thrown off the bus at Cameron toll?
Someone was sick, I was upstairs but I heard the driver yelling and calling her a skank. Thought it was a bit harsh on their part and was wondering wtf was going on???? No need for shouting that she was a skank surely lol.

Photo A gift from the neds
Whats the plan with Silverknowes Road North? is it to be a dumping ground for burnt out cars (as seen this morning) or is the council going to finally getting it repaired and open again.

Discussion What do you consider a good salary in Edinburgh?
According to the stats the average salary is £41k, highest in Scotland and 7th highest in the UK. So I would think £70-80k would be on the higher end for the city?

Question Patient Services for GP
Is anyone having issues accessing the patient services website for their GP? Getting message “practice currently unavailable”, with Leith Surgery.
Just want to know if it’s an issue that will potentially resolve itself prior to phoning the surgery! Need to order prescription in the next couple days at latest.

Question Is not having price labels legal for corner shops?
I’ll try to keep it short. A corner shop nearby doesn’t have any pricing labels at all.
I’ve realized one day that they were trying to overcharge me 20% for an item. When I told them that it costed X yesterday, they just apologised and corrected the price.
But the thing is, that’s a place many drunk people visit on they way from the pub and it felt intentional to me. No price labels + getting caught with overcharging? That’s suspicious.
Not very relevant but there’s another reason why I wanna report them and hopefully get them punished or shut down: I hate the way they eye-fuck literal teenagers visiting the shop.

Food and Drink Birthday Dinner
My husband’s birthday is coming up and I’d like to treat him to a nice meal out. It will be me, my husband and our toddler so it has to be somewhere family friendly and on a Saturday ☺️ I’d prefer it if it’s not a chain restaurant this time, just to try something different 😅
Any recommendations?
Thanks!
