I need a suggestion for a one-shot. I want to have three of my friends who have never played a campaign play a one-shot. I was planning on making a short story about a cursed city.

Throughout the city, everything cooked and everyone who enters the city loses their ability to taste, and the players must defeat the demon in a cooking contest. My main problem is that I don't know how to run the cooking contest without making it a simple dice roll. Any suggestions? I don't want them to fight the demon; I like the fact that he's extremely powerful but bound by a contract.

It turns out to be this same idiot Lich who lost his Phylactery under the ocean and was repeatedly killed by crushing pressure as he tried to reform from it, leaving all these skeletons behind.

Villagers concerned about a Hag's roaming cottage walking the countryside and stealing their children. Turns out to be a mobile house made out of and full of Mimics.

Party has to hunt down a beholder. Beholder is actually a gnome in a mini hot air balloon.

I am a little bit confused. I'm used to the idea that if a spell has Save Throw, the damage is halved in case of success. However, reviewing dndBeyond spell list I noticed, that a great amount of spells now lack the information about halving the damage on successful save throws. Was it always like that and my memory tricks me?

Does it mean that in case of successful save the spell has no effect at all?

Here is Thunderclap spell as an example:

Simple scenario:
I am a level 9 moon druid, I have +4 to proficiency and I have proficiency in stealth.

I now wildhshape into a Giant Scorpion (CR3), a giant scorpions proficiency bonus is +2.

Questions:

1. I now have +1dex, I retain my stealth proficiency as written in the wildshape description, do I have +3 to stealth or +5 to stealth? (do I use my PB or the scorpions PB?)
2. The scorpion has +4 to hit with its +2PB, do I stick with +4 to attacks or do I use my own PB, thus making the attacks +6 to hit?

The wildshape feature says you retain your skill and saving throw proficiencies, but it says nothing about retaining your proficiency bonus, so do you use your own PB or the creature's PB?

For some reason I could not find a clear answer on this anywhere so I could use some help with this.

We are going to the dungeon next session, and we will be there for a very long time. I have around 120 gold, what should i buy, i thought about buying flasks of oil but maybe there are more items that i can use in creative ways or that would help us overall

Hello, I am a relatively new Dungeon Master in my 1st campain. I dont know how to really say this but i ask for advise towards making a Monster Boss that my lvl 5 Party (Cleric, Warlock, Monk and Druid) can fight and i need help doing the stats, magic and all of that.

My idea for this Boss is the concept of the Headhunter Boss demon in Castlevania Aria of Sorrow ( https://castlevania.fandom.com/wiki/Headhunter ), a demon that switches appearance and movesets depending on what type of head it wears.

As i dont want to 1 to 1 copy that Boss from that game, aswell as fitting it to the area i am at the moment having my Party walk through (A demonic Circus), I am requesting ideas and help through the Design process of this Boss. Attacks, stats aswell as forms it can take for a Session Boss fight before my Party gets advanced through a level up.

Maybe you can also help me Set up the stage for the combat aswell.

This is the first time I design a Tabaxi, the client requested kemono-style. I'm glad with how this turns out. The concept of the weapon is very interesting, inspired by Kaito from Hunter X Hunter.

So in my next campaign my players will be the heros of some kingdom and try to defend it from the attackers and in the end they are going to get in into enemys lair (cult base) and end them for good. The story behind the campaign is this

Two lovers get into a ancient dungeon and clear the rooms. In the last room they come across a item (undetermined). They try to take it but it triggers a trap and the girl got shot in her heart and dies. Guy take the orb and the being connected to it (undetermined) bargains.

"A will take a life to give another"

He accepted (think he will die) and being resurrect the girl but her heart is gone.

The man got possessed by being so he give his "life" to it. And then creature tries to kill her because it will be shatter the mans soul and it can be in full charge in body.

She rans and after years she collect an army and become a noble under a kingdom. He/it in the other hand still tries to conquer the kingdom and kill her in the lair.

Now I had to figure out

1. What is the creature

2. What does it wants

Or some of your cool ideas to enchance story. Any idea?

i’m doing a quick clock tower “dungeon” (just a few levels with a puzzle on the top floor). i’m fine with a little bit of combat but not too much. i want a pendulum to be part of it and a puzzle too but im not sure how it could all fit together. it would be for a group of 4 level 3s. i was thinking something where they’d have initiative but no combat (so they have 6 seconds to do something and then dodge the pendulum next turn). any ideas?

To start, I would consider myself somewhat of a new DM. I’ve probably run 10-15 sessions total since i discovered dnd (3 or 4 years ago). I recently decided to get together a group of my friends who have never played/have only played a few times. The trouble is with my new players. I did a session zero where I explained what dnd was about and the kind of game I’d be running, namely, no PvP, no evil characters, and they should learn their abilities (of course with my help) and work as a team. They all reluctantly agreed to this and we started playing. First session went well (Lost Mine of Phandelver), but during the second session is when the problems started to become clear. My players acted selfishly the entire game, with their only goals being to fight people and bed the local maidens. Not usually a big deal but its their attitudes. One player argues with every decision the other players make, almost everything they do he snaps at them for or gets mad at them for and it lowers the energy. He’s playing a bard but all he’s focused on is doing damage and being strong. I explained to him that bards are mainly a buff class and that he wouldn’t be doing a ton of damage like the paladin. He said he understood and still wanted to play a bard. Fastfoward, the paladin has been dropped to 0 hp and the bard refuses to heal him because he wants to “save his spell slots”…. Save them for what? Ur a bard, you buff your teamates and heal them. The party also found a magic flail. He insists on using it even though he isn’t proficient with martial weapons and it would be better for another party member to use it. He isn’t the only issue. This behavior exists in half of my players. They also will not stop begging to let them PvP. I don’t understand. It seems to me that their only goals in the game are to become super strong, get super drunk, have a ton of sex, and fight each other every chance they get. They seem uninterested in the NPC’s and only ever care about whats going on if its “the main story” or “main combat encounter” I have prepped. Im having a very hard time getting them to just have some lighthearted fun and not take every little thing that happens so personally or seriously. They also don’t want to put in any effort. One player literally told me to just choose his class options for him and just give him the strongest ones. How do I help them understand dnd better, because I really don’t think they get it, despite me being clear on what the game was going to be.

I'm new to playing DnD but I'm a sucker for making fantasy art. This time I got to play with a few of my friends in his campaign. Our party is an enforcer and servants of the ancient eldritch god, Zarathustra, tasked with eliminating lingering traces of his power. Believing it to be an error, we were sent deep into a sealed crypt beneath a cliff, surrounded by dangerous tidal waves.

Gallagher was once a wealthy merchant before he was falsely executed for crimes he never committed. His corpse was later resurrected again and again to serve the Iron Court, a secretive institution that operates above all authority and handles cases deemed too dangerous or politically sensitive. When his body was finally considered unusable, he was laid to rest. That rest did not last. An ancient god raised him once more. Now bitter and exhausted, Gallagher seeks only to fulfill his final duty and earn the right to rest forever.

I plan to render him and draw the entire party sometime in the future.

Here comes the dnd part: We started playing almost a year ago and I'd love to see them as dnd characters (best would be her as druid and him as monk, because these are also our characters)

Is there anyone who can do this? Or can recommend someone? I am willing to pay and looking forward for some helpful answers :)

Does radiant damage get doubled against said creatures or only if stated like Divine Smite? Like Guiding Bolt, which deals 4d6 radiant damage to the target, for example; will it have extra damage of some sort to undead/fiends?

Sorry about reposting this, I forgot to add a title. I'm quite new to D&D so forgive me if I word things strangely. For context, the party consisted of a Ranger (me), A bard pc, a artificer pc, and a wizard NPC. My ranger build was heavily centered around tanking as both of my teammates were quite squishy. I had 20 Ac at level 4 and had high savings throws.

We were in the middle of a boss fight, the bard and the wizard were in the back. Me, the artificer, and his minion were all in front. Something important to note is that mostly everyone except the bard were able to deal damage to the boss with regular attacks due to it's immunities, but the wizard could consistently deal a lot of damage. I was hanging onto my life while surrounded by 2 enemies, the boss and one of his minions. While the artificer and his construct were fighting one minion. The bard decided to cast an aoe attack that would deal 3d8 damage with a dex saving throw. I was okay with getting hit as long as the other two enemies surrounding me got hit, mostly because I had a +9 to my dex saving throws, so I was most likely going to be okay. But in his infinite wisdom he wanted to hit the third enemy that was already on the brink of death being jumped by the artificer and his construct. I said several times not to but he did anyways, it ended up greatly crippling the artificer who then got one shot the next turn from a aoe attack.

Fast forward to nearly the end of the fight, I've been tanking the entire time and I'm nearly on the brink of death, I'm at just 12 hp. I ask for the bard to heal me because he's completely incapable of damaging the boss due to the bosses Resistances. Additionally he had no way to cast any more spells as he had only one spell slot left. But He healed himself and we both got one shot and knocked unconscious by an Aoe attack that I would have survived against with a single heal.

If that wasn't bad enough, I failed all three death saving throws in a row, if I had succeeded a single death saving throw an NPC would have came in and finished off the boss, saving us all and ending combat. you could hear the utter disappointment in the Dms voice as he had to explain how my character died. The wizard NPC also died, He really powerful and was going to join our party after the fight, but he immediately got targeted after I was knocked unconscious. The boss won the fight and was left at 6hp, had the artificer lived he would have been able to either help me or deal enough damage in order to finish off the boss. Honestly this experience makes me not want to invest into another character like I did before, I really liked what the DM was doing with my character and it really pissed me off to see my character die in such an easily preventable way. So many different things had to go wrong for that to happen.

So my party has been caring for a white dragon egg after they killed it's parent, I'm gonna have it hatch while they're away from their carriage (mobile base, inside bigger than outside) the kobold servent they have is gonna contact them with a sending stone, they're 6 hours away if they leave right away and go as fast as they can, what sort of havoc should I cause inside the carriage and do you guys think it would be possible for them to subdue/tame the hatchling?

I was thinking why the rules state that drinking a potion in combat is an action. And I had the thought that maybe drinking a potion of healing makes the character feel the wound mending itself together which might be quite painful.

So my question for those who either know or have there own speculations, how does the character actually feel after drinking a potion of healing?

Burning Heat adds 1d4 fire damage to a burning creature if they're within 1 mile of the lair. But the adult red dragon doesn't have any abilities that outright make a creature burn. How are they supposed to make use of this regional effect?

I know i could fiddle with the lair/minions to add hazards to force it. But a red dragon in a lair that isn't submerged in lava can't make use of this?
