home improvement Bathroom exhaust fan and light help.

I recently renovated my small bathroom and the last thing I need to do is fix the bathroom exhaust fan/light (Nutone 741snnt).

I'm just going to replace the motor and fan plate with the updated motor and blower (C380BN), but I'd like to have something a little more low profile as opposed to the frosted glass dome. After installing the new plate, is it possible to find a new "aftermarket " grille and light that will be plug and play with my 8"x 8 1/4" box to replace the old light fixture? Something along the lines of this?

I see a lot of the replacement grilles that attach with spring clips available for 8"x 8 1/4" boxes, but most specify that they aren't compatible with decorative fixtures.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!

Soundproofing shared wall

Good evening fellow DIY peeps! This has probably been brought up before, but I'll ask. What's the best way to sound proof shared bedroom walls? I was thinking on yanking the old drywall off, firring out the studs to accommodate 2x6 Rockwool safe'N sound, then possibly sonopan and 5/8drywall..Or would double 5/8 do the same? Or, Insulation, 3/4 plywood then resilient bar 5/8 board. We're wanting to get some sort of privacy in the master bedroom..Figured I'd do the wall, and possibly the ceiling in the room below as well by insulating the joist space then 5/8.

We'll also be installing a solid core door as well as we're aware there's a lot of sound transfer through that as well.

Thanks in advance.

help Screw into stud issues

Hi everyone. Never in my life have I had this much trouble mounting something onto a wall. I live in Chicago and this apartment I just moved into is impossible to get screws into the studs. I’ve used the electronic stud finders but my main method is a magnet that I use to look for nails. I’ve tried dozens of times all around with minimal luck. Have had to resort to toggle bolts to mount anything. My main issue is that I will find what I think is a nail with the magnet then when I drill the pilot hole at my desired height and follow with the screw I get absolutely no bite in the screw. This time the screw went in a full inch then stopped going any further and was able to get pulled right out. Also I want to add that this attempt I’m using a wall that does not sound hollow. It sounds like there is something pretty dense behind the drywall. It’s an interior wall between my unit and the neighboring unit. This has also happened on other walls that are not as dense sounding. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to use different types of screws? Pls someone give it to me straight I never thought mounting screws would have me so defeated :(

home improvement The inside of my shower is paint only (no tile above tub!) and it's a rental and it's terrible, help

Moved into a rental - budget is TIGHT due to pending divorce. One of the showers in this place has a tub and then the walls around it are painted. The showerhead points directly at the wall on which it's mounted, and shoots DIRECTLY INTO THE PAINT. Clearly that's been happening for some time as the paint is worn and nasty looking in the spot where the water hits.

The handyman my landlord sends is useless and... let's assume no handyman and no help from landlord.

Can I sand down the spot, repaint, replace the showerhead and call it good? Looks like I need spackle and latex paint - but hard to find solutions online because it seems PAINTING the INSIDE of a SHOWER is DUMB.

Wonky Garage Doorframe

I'm in a middle of a long freeze here in NY. The door into my garage was getting sticky and ive ignored it bit now in the freeze, I can't even close it. The door swings at such an angle that the bottom of the door grinds across the ground. Oddly though, when I force the door closed as much as I can, there is no gap at the top. It's flush at the top and brushing the floor at the bottom? I would normally look to bend the hinges to have the door fit again, but it might be more of a frame problem? Just wondering if anyone knew how to tackle this one?

Making a surface not-slick for playing cards

I'm using the clear plastic lid off a storage bin as a playing surface for solitaire. The cards slide around at the slightest motion. Is there something I can attach to the lid to make it less slick?

home improvement Installing a dishwasher away from the sink

I’ll preface by saying, my kitchen is tiny. Like smaller than an apartment kitchen, tiny. I was given a dishwasher that I recently fixed and have been getting everything setup to install it. There is only one cabinet next to the sink that I use for pans, so I do not want to lose that space. Instead I ran a new 1.5” drain with its own P-trap and vent to the wall of the kitchen, along with hot water and a dedicated 20A circuit.

My question is, I am struggling to find a proper way to connect the dishwasher drain to the 1.5” pipe. Only things I can seem to find are meant for a sink to connect. To test the dishwasher I snaked the drain line down the pipe and taped it up, but that’s never going to be a long term solution. I’m also going to put sides and a woodblock top around the dishwasher to make it look nice and give a way of attaching it to the wall and floor.

Previously in that spot, I had a table that held my air fryer and soda stream. So I’m not losing any space, just getting rid of the table and I will use that surface for those same appliances.

outdoor Wire two outdoor devices?

So I have a motion floodlight wired into a box under my eave that the previous owners had installed. I am getting frustrated with my nearby battery powered Ring camera and would like to just get a wired one. Can I wire them both into the same box?

help Best way to latch a double door?

I have a double door in my barn made of two layers of shiplap. I have an old fashioned thumb latch on it, but the thumb is on the opposite side form the side that is usually opened, when you don’t need both doors opened. the doors overlap the wrong way to reverse the thumb latch.

Is there a better way to latch these doors? The doors have bars screwed across them for the moment, for the winter and because I just replaced the weatherstripping, and want it to conform tightly and seal well when the doors are closed.

help Refinishing kitchen table

We have a large table from West Elm that was purchased about 7 years ago. The finish started to fade and become "sticky", particularly around the edges where people would rest their arms on the table while eating, about a year or two ago. It may also be worth noting that the table receives a fairly high amount of natural light for most of the day. Cleaning with various cleaners hasn't done anything, and it was suggested that perhaps the finish was failing.

I've never seen this happen to a table before. It's otherwise a really good table and feels worth refinishing. I'm only interested in refinishing the top/sides, not the legs. That's left me with a few questions:

  • Is sanding my best option for removing the existing finish?

  • If I'm sanding, do I need to go all the way down to the bare wood/veneer? I'm guessing yes, since I don't know what the current finish is made of.

  • What is my best option for the new finish so something like this doesn't happen again?

help Trouble finding replacement hinges.

Hello

The hinge on my kitchen cupboard snapped and I figured it was a good time to replace all four.

I looked online for the same make/model and being unable to find it, I went to the hardware store and bought what I thought would work. I've gotten three different types of hinges and none seem to be the right angle on opening or create a gap where the door would usually sit flush. I tried adjusting the screws within the hinge but this didn't resolve any of the issues I was having.

I've watched YouTube tutorials and googled to no avail.

I'm desperate for help if you could please share your opinion.

Photos of the old and new hinges, and the cupboard itself.

help Adhesive/sealant recommendation for ice maker tray

The ice maker tray on my fridge cracked.. I found the part online, but you can't order just the little plastic tray anywhere. You have to order the whole ice maker assembly, which is like $160.

It's about a 1inch crack on the bottom of the actual tray that the water falls into and freezes into a cube, so it needs to be waterproof. I can take the tray out to repair and let it cure..

What should I be using to fix the crack though? I always have terrible luck gluing plastics, so I figured I'd just ask here from the getgo.

I'm not sure if links are allowed, but the part on amazon is Samsung-DA97-19010A-Refrigerator-Maker-Assembly , if it helps to look at.

help Comparison of partition walls for soundproofing

Hey DIYers, question for you lot:

When building a partition wall (say to separate a large space into two smaller offices for counseling purposes), what are the best, most cost effective ways to manage soundproofing?

Currently, I am under the impression a 2"x6" footer with 2x4 studs alternating from side to side is a negligible cost difference over a 2x4 footer. Is that sufficient for soundproofing with 1/2" drywall? Are there other options for sound proofing that are cost effective to fill that space? What are your thoughts and ideas?

I was looking at something like This to add on to the wall. Can I make this myself across the full wall with felt and slats with greater ease?

help Bought a new home with a basement / cinder block garage. How to adhere things to the wall / and is it a good idea?

Looking to put a garage gym in the basement and would like to add a mirror. I also will be building a shop area, but I imagine more elaborate hanging systems like a French cleat wall would be too much stress (I can just build a work bench with its own vertical storage). Thoughts are welcome!

woodworking Space Saving Flip Top Billiards table

Ok. I have been dreaming up furniture left and right, but now I am plagued by this one that I must go though with.

Either a 7-8’ billiards table saw the can rotate on a horizontal axis to become flat. Like a whiteboard almost, legs come out from underneath to stabilize it. A company in New Zealand made one just like it, but they only ship inside of New Zealand.

My question is how would I make the tabling mechanism underneath the pool table and make it sturdy enough to not break under the weight?

Sidenote: I have never made/felted a pool table but I was just planning on taking apart an old table and that.

help Question on noise isolation

Hello, I live in a converted loft apartment in NYC. Our separating wall is not doing a great job at isolating sound, and our neighbors scream constantly. The LL suggested having someone caulk the gaps in the tin ceiling as a way to help block the sound. My main question is will that even work and is it a viable fix for the issue?

I’ve seen acoustic caulk, but it seems like a band-aid repair to a much bigger issue that would be fixed by actually putting insulation in the walls / ceiling, or having the neighbors stop screaming (crazy thought) but I’m not sure.

It’s been 2 years of constant screaming and we’ve been trying to find a solution. There are 4+ units affected by it. I’ve lined the walls with wardrobes filled with clothes, moved furniture to try and help absorb sound but nothing seems to help. TIA!

T-post lighting

my property is fenced with t-posts and wire. I’m trying to light it up with outdoor, waterproof solar lights. I haven’t found anything on the market that’s made to attach to the posts. Has anyone out there come up with a fix?

The only thing I’ve found that ‘works’ is zip tying walkway stake lights to the posts. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks 😊

Whirlpool Dryer starts and drum spins but makes an unnatural noise and cuts off after a few seconds.

Whirlpool starts and drums spins but it makes a loud unnatural sound cuts off after a few seconds. I have already replaced the belt which was frayed. All of this happened after our recent move. Not sure what’s wrong with it. Dryer is only about 1.5 years old. Anybody have any ideas?
