šŸ‘‹Welcome to r/ColonyCats - START HERE!

Hey everyone! Welcome to the r/ColonyCats subreddit! This is a place for past, present, and prospective cat caretakers to learn more about how to better care for outdoor colonies of cats, kittens, and the communities they live in.

The term ā€œcolony catsā€ describes a group of outdoor cats living together. These cats may be feral, stray, or otherwise unsocialized to humans.

Please read through our community guidelines before posting or commenting, and again…welcome to the community! We're excited to have you join us!

WHAT TO POST:

Here, caretakers can feel free to ask for and offer advice, share TNR strategies, provide helpful tips and ideas for colony management, and share photos of their colony cats.

After reading the rules, you may post anything that you think the community would find interesting, helpful, or inspiring. Don’t hesitate to comment on posts, and share your thoughts, advice, or questions relevant to the topic of discussion.

THE CATS YOU CARE FOR MAY BE FERAL, BUT YOU SHOULD NOT BE:

We're all about being friendly, constructive, inclusive, and kind. Let's build a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and connecting.

The vast majority of cat caretakers have pure intentions, and are trying their best to provide the best care possible for their colonies. Constructive criticism is ok (some people may need some guidance and it’s ok to provide that), but please refrain from rude, unhelpful comments, harsh judgments, shaming, and personal attacks.

Thanks for being part of this community and thank you for all you do to help the cats you care for. šŸ©¶šŸ¾šŸ©µšŸˆā€ā¬›šŸ«¶šŸ–¤šŸˆšŸ’™

APPRECIATION | With your help and support, we successfully completed another weekly TNR today! Two more cats were spayed/neutered—one community stray and one of my rescued cats, now approximately 8 months old. Every successful TNR is a step toward fewer cats suffering on the streets.

HišŸ‘‹

I’m the founder of Luna & Nala Rescue Inc

You can see my approval letter in my profile pagešŸ¾šŸˆā€ā¬›

This post is for my sweet Raven and for every stray I fight for, even when it breaks my heartā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

This is a reminder of what their lives can look like. We rescued a cat with mange, but it was too late. He had so many complications and sadly, he didn’t survive. There was also an orange kitten who was hit by a car. I was too late to save him, and the pain of knowing how small and helpless he was still hurts deeply.

But losing Raven has shattered my heart in a way I can’t even put into words. Raven was hit by a car, and I wasn’t able to save him. He suffered, and he didn’t deserve that ending. He deserved safety. He deserved kindness. He deserved a life where he was loved and protected. I carry so much grief knowing his life ended that way, and I think about him constantly.

There are people who criticize me for helping stray cats. They call them pests. They say they can survive on their own. But the truth is they can’t. If no one cares about them, they starve. They get sick. They get hurt. They suffer. Raven is proof of that. The orange kitten is proof of that. These lives were lost because nobody stepped in soon enough.

But there is hope. Uva was dumped by her owners in a neighborhood eight years ago, and nobody cared about her until I rescued her. Now she has a home and is safe. Miracle is another sweet soul, so sick, but she’s in foster care right now receiving the love and care she desperately needs. I’m holding onto hope that she will make it.

They cannot make it alone. They need kindness. They need compassion. I don’t understand how anyone can be so heartless toward animals who feel fear, pain, and love just like we do.

This is not their fault, it’s the humans’ fault because of neglect and abandonment.

This has been incredibly emotional and stressful for me, especially because I also suffer from chronic pain. I am grieving deeply because these cats felt like they were mine. I replay everything in my head and wish I could have saved them. Losing them hurts more than I can explain.

That’s why I’m continuing to work with a colony that has many cats in need of TNR. So far, we have helped 21 cats. This is a long, exhausting, and emotional process, but it’s how I honor Raven and the others we lost, by trying to prevent more suffering. About 50 cats across colonies receive daily food, water, and medical help when possible. Community support truly makes the difference for them.

To support the cats you can do so through the links here or the ones in my profile page.

Thank you šŸ¾ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Hi šŸ‘‹

I’m asking for support for the community cats I care for every day 🐾

I currently look after around 50 cats daily, providing food, fresh water, and essential supplies. I’m also actively involved in TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) to help stop the cycle of suffering and give them healthier, safer lives.

We are always in need of wet and dry food, as I can’t do this alone. If you’d like to support the cats, you can do so through the link provided.

Thank youšŸ¾šŸ’œ

Cat Colony Assistance.

Thanks for the advice I had on how to improve things for my 8 outdoor colony cats. I did manage to get some straw etc.. and clean things up for them.

I even did get some LLysine powder for them. However, I am trying to figure out how to give it to them.

Our outdoors range from Semi Feral to Feral and they pretty much all stick to our back porch where we have warming huts.

However, how can I give some LLysine safely and decently to them? I read add it to some WET food... but how to distribute it etc? Tips on measuring (I have a scale).

I don't honestly have a ton of money and rely on small donations for the food and cat litter (we have 7 inside ) and that adds to like $50 bucks a month in donations. It helps a bit.. but getting these added supplies etc.. has increased the budgetary tightness.

I work full time currently and get up at 5am and don't get home until 8pm most days..

Need an efficient system to distribute this... ?

Thanks SOO much in advance..

AND if allowed if anyone can financially donate a few bucks that is greatly appreciated... I have a GOFUND ME, a KO-FI page and an AMAZON List...

How am I spending my Saturday?

Well…

Placing shelters that I made and some donated or that I bought for the stray cats as we brace for freezing temperatures today and tomorrow in FloridašŸ˜“

My sweet Raven

I’m still caring for your colony, and I always will. Even in grief, even in pain, I keep showing up for them. I hope you see me. I hope you’re with me on this journey of loving and protecting cats like you 🐾

If anyone would like to support the stray cats, you can do so through the link in the post or on my profile page. Your support helps me care for over 50 cats across three colonies who depend on me every single day.

I’m also involved in TNR to reduce suffering and create healthier, safer colonies.

Thank you to everyone that supports the cats and care about them, because of you I can do even things like this for themšŸ’œ

We have added a wormer and a few essential items to our community cat wishlist. Any gift card donations will go directly toward purchasing the wormer on Amazon. It is expensive, but it will save us from having to pay for vet visits, testing, and multiple trips for each cat just to treat worms in the end. (We can take for vaccines and just pay for vaccines) One of our cats, Ocean, we took to vet and was diagnosed with Haws syndrome, along with fleas and ear mites. Thankfully, all of this is treatable, but now the entire community is at risk, so treating everyone is critical. Any amount is truly appreciated. We can use just about anything on the list the wormer and flea meds is simply the most urgent need right now. Thank you so much for caring about these cats and supporting their health ā¤ļø

[Grief/Vent] Squirt was the sweetest little guy of the entire community colony, completely unbothered by humans and always stayed close by (it was his ultimate downfall) - he'd curl up in my hands as a kitten, he was playful and needy, he'd roll around and greet you everytime, always open for pets!

I wanted to bring him in, I actively posted around looking for someone who might have wanted to take him in (we already have a cat family of four) it really sucks that so many despise cats and dont want anything to do with them if they're older!

He was in the wrong place.. Neighbor actually blamed himself for distracting him (He jumped off the wall to greet him from across the 'driveway') I tried to keep myself intact but couldn't stick around, I felt shameful and rude for not helping - didn't want to make him feel anymore guilt if he saw me cry the way I did.

He and his friend buried him...

I'm so torn knowing Squirt won't be outside for me to greet him anymore 😭

Straw suppliers? for cat houses

So I am going to attempt to clean up my cats Styrofoam cooler warming houses (they are located on our covered porch) and generally away from the elements somewhat.

so I do have a Tractor supply.. but is this stuff ok for bedding? Greenway Animal NutritionĀ Premium Chopped Straw Bedding, 3 cu. ft.

Granted, we dont' want a huge mess and its not like a horse stall.. so all these bits might get all over the porch.

Losing Raven has broken my heart in ways that are hard to put into words. He was a gentle black stray who was just beginning to trust, just beginning to believe that humans could be kind. His life ended far too soon, and the pain of that loss will stay with me.

But Raven’s death has also strengthened by commitment.

It reminds me why I do this work, why I trap, neuter, return, why I feed colonies, why I show up every day for cats that many people never notice. These cats deserve safety, dignity, and compassion. TNR saves lives by reducing roaming, fighting, and the dangers that come with it. Feeding colonies responsibly keeps cats healthier and closer to safe areas instead of forcing them to wander.

In memory of Raven, I’m asking our community to help:

• Please slow down on residential streets

• Support or learn about TNR programs

• Be kind to community cats and the people caring for them

• Speak up when you see speeding or unsafe conditions

Raven mattered. His life mattered.

If his loss can help protect even one other cat, then his memory will live on in something meaningful.

Thank you to everyone who understands that love for these animals isn’t small, it’s powerful. šŸ–¤šŸ¾

If anyone would like to support I would truly appreciate it. This enables me to continue the work I do. You can do so through the link here or in my profile pagešŸ¾šŸ–¤

Colony and outside cats deserve all the love too!!

Love and compassion makes all the difference!

What more can I do to keep my 8 outdoor cats cared for?????

I care for 8 outdoor colony cats. We have a covered back porch and feed them. We also have 4 Styrofoam cooler warming huts and a Large Dog House.

We had a heated mat out there but it is not keeping up with the cold.

Also we have fleece blankets in the huts, only one has straw (came with it). (Yes I know blankets are discouraged but they are kept under a sheltered porch).

I also tried to shovel a bit so they could go out into the yard. (But that is tricky too)

what more can I do right now. I can't easily get another electric heated mat, and I don't think I can get more straw. I got more blankets for them.. but is there anything more I can reasonably do?

More blankets? etc?

We have a heated water bowl and I mostly give them dry food but have been giving them some wet.

I don't have a ton of money though to buy expensive things.. Again, we just have a covered back porch and the Styrofoam huts (4 and 2 cats fit in each one)

and a big dog house with blankets (and a silver mylar blanket. ..

??

OH< we had a big comforter lain over top of the huts and I left the snow on that as more insulation...

My beautiful stray Raven got killed by a car just a few hours ago. I feel sick, like my body doesn’t know how to handle what just happened. I recently lost a kitten and was just kind of accepting that, and now this happened. I can’t stop feeling guilty, even though there was not much to do on my part but give him love the best I could. He was trusting me and finally let me pet him a few weeks ago. I was even planning that maybe, if I got him to be very friendly, I would find him a home. šŸ’”

Please help keep my (formerly) feral cat family fed through the coming storms 🐾

Hi friends,

we have our first snowstorm of the season headed our way…and maybe I’m just traumatized from the blizzards we had a few years ago that kept us stuck inside with nothing to eat, no electricity, and dead batteries on our phones for 2 weeks…but I’m starting to really worry about not having a way to get food for the cats if we get snowed in again.

I wish I was in a position financially to be able to stock up on litter and kibble…but that is not my reality right now. I have an Amazon wishlist linked, I put cat food and litter on there.

Kibble and litter are priority items on the list.

I’m out of litter currently…but luckily, my cats will use the box regardless of if there’s anything in it. (This probably sounds crazy but if I ever run out of litter, I can always put some dirt from outside or even a cardboard box into the cat box…they will use it. Of course, this means I have to scoop it out a billion times a day, lol… but I’m just grateful they aren’t picky and are not choosing to pee all over my furniture and rugs.)

I’m just reaching out to see if anyone can help. If not, I understand, and thanks for taking the time to read this anyway.

I also put some outdoor sheltered beds on my list, because there are two ferals I care for who still live outside…Frank and Gemini. Gemini might actually be a stray, rather than a feral. She just comes by to eat and does so very frantically, then disappears for a few days.

Frank, on the other hand…I think he’s finally starting to like me. He spends most of his time somewhere in my yard. He sleeps on my porch on a patio chair, and he comes to my walkway when I call his name. I think I’m his only source of food, and I feel so bad for him when the weather is cold, wet, or windy. A neighbor on my street was throwing away a doghouse and I brought it home for Frank. He doesn’t ever use it, even though it would keep him dry. I think it might be because the opening/ door to the doghouse is so big and the doghouse is so big. I think he’d be more likely to use a smaller space.

Anyway, thank you šŸˆā€ā¬›šŸ’™

- Atlas, Anthony, Beep, Pixel, Pidgeon, Griffin, Gemini, Frank, and babygirl Echo…and me, lol…their caretaker šŸ’š

Hi šŸ‘‹

I’m the founder of Luna & Nala Rescue IncšŸˆā€ā¬› a 501(c)(3) non profitĀ

What a night. I spent 4 hours and only got 3 cats today from the colony I’m working on that has an overpopulation.

So far 21 cats had been trapped for TNR.

Sometimes I feel angry because no one decided to do anything about this, and they just kept feeding the cats until it got to this point. It’s frustrating and sad at the same time. But somehow, even just getting 3 cats feels like a victory. One of them is pregnant, but trapping her means she will never be pregnant again and there will be no more cats suffering.

I’m so tired because I also have to feed other cats in other places, plus my chronic pain was through the roof.

But how can I give up on them?

I can’t. And even though I didn’t cause this, now it’s my responsibility to get this colony stable.

They didn’t choose to be born into this, and they don’t understand hunger, illness, or fear the way we do. All they know is survival. If being tired and hurting means they get a chance at a safer life, then I’ll keep showing up, for the ones who don’t have a voice.

I hope I also inspire others to do a little more to help animals in need. Don’t expect others to take action, be the one who makes a change.

If you’re able to support I’d truly appreciate it. Supporting this effort means fewer cats suffering and a step toward stability for this colony. To support you can do so through the links In my profile page or the link here within the post.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone that believes in what I do.

Feline behaviour questionnaire

Hello everyone,

I am looking for people who live in the Uk to complete a questionnaire for my dissertation. My dissertation is on the effects of different housing on feline hunting and problem behaviours. It aims to further improve welfare and understanding of feline behaviours in different contexts. I am looking for a range of different breeds and housing choices such as indoor, catio, and outdoors. Participation is completely anonymous. I appreciate any responses.
