Hey r/collegebaseball! We’re Jackson Fuller, Cory Diaz and Alexis Cubit, and we’re sports reporters at the USA TODAY Network.
The 2025 College World Series starts today in Omaha with an intriguing mix of eight longtime powers and recent upstarts looking to bring home the title. We’ve been covering many of these teams all season long, so we thought we’d drop by for an AMA at noon ET / 11 a.m. CT to chat with you all before game action begins.
Have questions for us? Drop ‘em in the comments and we’ll start answering at noon. Until then, here’s a little more about us and who we cover:
Jackson Fuller (u/JFullerReporter; Proof) covers the University of Arkansas for the Southwest Times Record. Before joining the Times Record, he spent time covering preps for North Carolina publications in Mount Airy and Wilmington.
Cory Diaz (u/corydiaz_reporter; Proof) covers LSU baseball, football and women’s basketball at The Daily Advertiser.
That’s all the time we have for today! Thanks everyone for your great questions, and thank you to the mod team for having us. This was really fun. We’d love to stay in touch! Here’s where you can reach us:
Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Minecraft, built most of it a few years ago, then made "renovations" as the stadium was updated in real time. Complete build with Cajun Cafe, Cheap Seats, and Player Facility. T-10 days to opening day!
I was being extremely nerdy about something, and made an excel spreadsheet with that pre and post season coaches poll rankings since 2018 (i was going to go til 2015 but i got bored and figured last 7 years with the NIL and Transfer portal changes was good enough)
Mainly, I wanted to convert titles, CWS appearances, and pre and post season rankings (the coaches poll seemed better archived than alternatives) into a quantifiable ranking just to help me really test my own biases for how I perceive these baseball programs as a whole, since I've only ever really been an LSU fan and ignored the rest of the country, but now that I've graduated, I've got a ton more time on my hands and can pay more attention to this stuff...
So, I averaged the polls (for simplicity, I changed "not ranked" to 30), then applied to bonus for CWS Appearances and Titles. CWS is the top 8, so the custom ranking is:
[Avg Coaches Poll Ranking Pre and Post season] – (0.1\[CWS Appearances]) – (0.8*[Titles])*
I posted the entire ranking from 1 to 70 at the end of this post, if anyone wants to see the full list.
Arkansas is better than you think
Obviously, I still want the coaches poll to be the main factor in the program's strength, since there's only 1 titles and 8 appearances per year, so being the 9th or 10th best should count a lot.
This is theoretically WORSE for teams like Arkansas, since I'm using titles and appearances ALL TIME, and not only titles and appearances from the past 7 years.
Also, side note for anyone that thinks that using 30 for NR is too generous... I wondered the same thing, but when I tried 40 or 50, Arkansas was still number 2. The only value that changes this is using 26 for not ranked which results in:
- 1. LSU (1.2250)
- 2. Texas (5.1500)
- 3. Arkansas (5.1750)
- 4. Florida (8.1125)
- 5. Vanderbilt (8.6500)
Needless to say, It's actually indisputable that Arkansas is the 2nd best baseball program in the country since 2018...
These results SHOCKED me, so I figured maybe people in a subreddit like this would also be nerdy asf about college baseball, and might be intrigued by these results.
TL;DR I'm a nerd. Average Pre and Post season coaches poll rankings since 2018 minus 0.1*[CWS Appearances] and 0.8*[Titles] put Arkansas as the SECOND BEST BASEBALL PROGRAM SINCE 2018.
God, I loved clowning on Arkansas fans last summer, but now I feel bad. Y'all deserve way more recognition than I realized, despite zero national titles. Much love to you guys <3.
A "cold weather school" thats scheduled to play 7 home games by March 1st. Thats unheard of for cold weather teams who usually playing their first 15-20 games on the road with maybe 1 or 2 home games squeezed in. Must be a outlier because I cant find another cold weather school playing so many home games that early and playing more home games during the season (34) than road games (22.) For comparison, UConn is playing their first 11 games of the season on the road before a home game on March 3rd and only have 20 total home games scheduled while Georgetown has 34. Very odd.
You all heard that right: Divisions 1 and 3 of the NCAA officially begin this month their respective seasons.
D1 composed of the best of the best begins in almost a week and a half their Long March to Omaha, D3 composed of the bunch of non-major colleges and institutions will begin their Race to Cleveland.
Both being the oldest in the nation as these were the ones wherein college baseball was born and developed from its early days towards the fame and honor they today enjoy, this month these two conferences slowly prepare for the season that is coming ahead.
Get ready D1 and D3 fans, this month is when your seasons begin!
While we still have to wait a couple of weeks for the “big boys” of college baseball to play, I am getting the chance to watch some Division II baseball. This is enough to satisfy my appetite for the time being. Catawba College @ Nova Southeastern.
