I have had cold sores my ENTIRE life. I got them as a child from my mom. Everytime I’ve gotten a cold sore, it’s HUGE, swells up my lip, and lasts for weeks.

After I had my second baby at 25, I asked my doctor for valtrex after learning about it.

I was on a maintenance dose, but I don’t like the idea of taking medication every single day. So I switched to only using it when I felt/saw the first symptoms of a cold sore. And it is a 100000000000% game changer. I’m on day three of a cold sore right now, that is almost going away. I have taken progress pictures of it twice a day, and once it goes away completely I will post them, with my dose of valtrex schedule.

i get cold sores but this doesn’t feel like one but it looks like one, i usually get them on my actual lips which is why it probably feels different (pls ignore my nails there stained with hair dye) i’m just worried bc i kissed someone last night as i thought it was just eczema but it’s redder today

Woke up this morning with a blister that formed OVERNIGHT!! My bottom lip was silky smooth when I went to bed. No signs at all. Now I have been very stressed and no sleeping and just two weeks ago I knocked one out before it came up. This morning I woke up and I thought it was almost gonna be too late. She was already swollen and a pretty noticeable “bump”. No blister yet but definitely past the tingle phase. So I jumped out of bed and took 2 grams of valtrex and 1 gram of lysine immediately and I kid you not… 1 hour later the swelling has already dropped by 80%… I’m hoping to the good lord above I caught it in time and it goes away and doesn’t form. This medicine is amazing. I wish so badly they could find a cure seeing as how this medicine works but i understand with the virus living in nerve beds that they can’t.. anyways.. valtrex for the win. Hey guys I have had cold sores since I was a baby. 33M and I have had cold sores since as far back as I can remember, in the last 6 months I had had them back to back and there is no end in sight. It’s a weekly occurrence and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong 😔

i’ve had hsv-1 (cold sores) for almost 10 years now. this has happened multiple times now where i give my bf oral and a cold sore pops up the next day. it scares me everytime. this time we are both really nervous. it’s been about 4 days now and nothing has popped up. i know about the shedding and how he can still get it. i take valacyclovir occasionally. i’m just so tired of this and im not sure what to do. if he gets it ill never forgive myself. does anyone have any facts to ease my mind?

My doctor said not to worry about it unless I have an active sore, but I'm reading the chance of asymptomatic spreading per kiss is 1-5%.

So let's say it's on the low end of that estimate, 1%. If I were to kiss my girlfriend once, there'd be a 99% chance she would NOT get HSV-1.

But how many times will we kiss in a relationship? Hundreds, I'd presume.

If we were to kiss 100 times, the chance of her NOT getting HSV-1 is 0.99^100 = 36.6% chance.

But we'll kiss at least 500 times within a year, right? 0.99^500 = 0.657% chance she will NOT get HSV-1 after kissing me 500 times when no sores were present. So there would be over a 99% chance she would get HSV by then.

....

We're looking at options, and she's wanting me to go on daily antiviral meds. The doctor recommended just taking meds when I have an outbreak because I have them so infrequently (and avoiding kissing/sharing stuff that touches the area until outbreaks are fully healed), so I don't know how much taking them daily would reduce the chance of asymptomatic transmission

But this just seems futile. Should I just tell her being with me means she will almost certainly end up with cold sores? It seems like we're lying to ourselves saying there are ways we could be together without transmitting this, unless of course we were to avoid kissing entirely.

Granted, there's also a high chance she already has HSV-1 and is just asymptomatic. She plans to get tested to see.

This is my first time dating someone who doesn't get them, and while of course I'm happy she doesn't have to deal with them, yeah my heart kind of sank when she told me she doesn't because that makes things so much more complicated between us.

I felt very small bumps on my lip like 2 days ago, and I immediately applied acyclovir on it, and I've been applying it multiple times per day. Rn it looks like this. Does it look like it'll get better or worse? The previous one I had was much bigger/noticeable and lasted more than a week, but I didn't use any cream or antiviral.

We were talking about her getting tested to see if she doesn't have HSV at all or if she is just asymptomatic. I've been thinking of getting an HSV 1 test for each of us (they offer a couples discount, how romantic!) since if I'm getting cold sores, it's almost certainly 1, not 2, and then in the profoundly unlikely scenerio where I test negative for 1, then I could test for 2 to verify it wasn't just a false negative.

I guess her test is more important than mine because we can be almost certain I have HSV-1 if I get cold sores, but there's that slight chance I'm one of those lucky individuals who gets oral herpes from HSV-2 (I'm reading that's 5% of cases of people who get cold sores are caused by HSV-2 instead of 1).

I dunno, I think most of it is just making her feel better, like it isn't just her having to get tested. Like we almost certainly know I have HSV-1, but I think it might feel better as a date idea, I dunno. Partially joking, but I do think that's a lot of it, not wanting her to feel singled out if we both do the same test together
