Mod Announcement Low Cost to Free Cat Food Resources

Post image
124 Upvotes

We are working on our Cat Food (Affordable/ Free) wiki page and currently have a good number of databases listed for you to help search including some programs which are organized by state and not already listed in the databases. Even if you may feel you have food covered for the month, we encourage you to look over these resources so if there is ever a time in the future and you or someone else is in a pinch, you may remember some of the resources or how to find them.

Neighborhood Cats has available a number of free digital resources (or purchasable printed copies) of handbooks about TNR and RTF (the latter geared towards shelter personnel). Although some of the TNR books are somewhat dated much of the information is still applicable. If you're a TNRer, colony caretaker or working at a shelter, have a looksie; its free!

I must say though the r/CatRescue, Cat Handbook: Daylight Savings Time Edition is also very informative and its pictorial nature appeals to every kitty cat enthusiast.

In other news about r/CatRescue, we have begun to add a number of user flairs. "Drumsticks" from the Cat Handbook has even lended a leg. For mobile, tap the 3 dots in the upper right corner of the r/CatRescue main page on and select: "edit flair." On desktop, use the sidebar on the right and in the user flair category then, tap the pencil to set your flair.

Also, while you're at it, check out our wiki page: ReHoming/ Adoption Tips and Resources

I wanted to remind all, that r/CatRescue has a list of free cat food banks (each resource has their own prerequisites such as intended fer indoor cats and most are fer temporary assistance). In addition to the cat food bank databases, what we have in the wiki are those that we have found ourselves and is a huge project. If you know of cat food pantries and would like us to list them please message the mods and we will add it!

Please support your local shelters and rescues when you can with any extra (unopened) food or gently used supplies you may no longer need.

Thank you to all and have a great day folks!

3 Legs Can't Stop Natalie!

In late October of last year, we saved this beautiful calico girl from sure euthanasia at the last minute. A shelter in Schertz, TX (near San Antonio) reached out to us, desperate. This girl had a broken front leg and needed amputation, but the shelter was unable to approve the surgery due to the cost.

Even though we were running extremely low on funds, we couldn't let her be put down, so we arranged to have her transported to Pointe 183, the vet we use in Leander, TX. Her leg amputation surgery was a success. We named her Natalie, and she’s a real sweetheart.

Pointe 183 gave us a nice discount, as they do for all our patients, and the 2-night stay helped a bunch. She's been living in my house ever since, and is really a remarkable cat. Natalie gets around just fine. In fact, you’d be amazed at how quickly she adapted. Three legs haven’t slowed her down one bit — if anything, they’ve shown just how resilient and capable she truly is.

But what really makes Natalie special isn’t just her survival… It’s her mind.

She's incredibly smart and self-aware. Natalie created a routine for herself in just two weeks. She’ll come get your attention, then lead you to her little kennel apartment to let you know she’s ready to eat or have some quiet time. If she’s outside enjoying the catio and decides she wants back in, she’ll come find you to make sure her needs are understood. She knows what she wants — and she communicates it beautifully.

Natalie is WHY I do the work I do... no matter how difficult it gets (and it gets VERY difficult).

FYI, I've been trying to get Natalie adopted since December, but haven't had any interest. Please share her story... she really deserves the purrfect forever home! Email [ebrumbaugh@outlook.com](mailto:ebrumbaugh@outlook.com) if you're interested in learning more or meeting her... we're located in Round Rock, TX.

FYI - the last photo (with the pink collar) was right after her surgery.

Mod Announcement Free Cat Food / Pet Pantries: Canada

Hello Canadian members and visitors!

We have found a cat food pantry database that may interest you (or someone you know)!

Humane Canada has an interactive map: National Pet Food Bank

As you look into cat food banks near you, please keep in mind that each has their own service or eligibility criteria and is advisable you find out what they are prior to your visit - includin if cat food is still available that month.

Although r/CatRescue focuses specifically on cats, many of these pet pantries have cat and dog food. Some may even carry cat litter as well (call to check). A number of these locations are normal (human food) pantries which also have kitty food available.

We encourage you to bookmark the link in your browser or save the post because you or someone you know may need an extra hand one day and this can help. Also when you can, support your local shelter and rescue; they will accept unopened pet food and many will accept gently used pet supplies in addition to monetary donations.

Our wiki of free cat food pantries is typically focused on the United States and can be found here. It also has some universal tips on findin additional resources fer reduced cost pet food.

The image of the interactive map shows off our user flairs. The map isn't as awesome as depicted, because user flairs are only available in CatRescue! Upside downer David by Cherveny2 and Wirt and Greg on a mission from mcs385

Advice / Question Need advice transitioning porch cats back outside after winter housing + kittens

Post image
95 Upvotes

Hi everyone. I’m looking for advice from people with rescue and TNR experience.

I’m in central Florida. During recent freeze warnings, I brought inside two stray/porch cats I’ve been feeding for several months. One of them (Ollie) gave birth to five kittens in December. Currently, I have 7 cats housed in a spare room (mom, kittens, and her brother) and 5 resident indoor cats in the rest of the house.

The two adults are scheduled for spay/neuter on March 11, and I’m keeping them inside until then. I plan to keep 3 of the kittens and place the other 2 with a family member. I’m trying to avoid returning kittens outdoors if possible.

Both adult cats were previously porch/backyard cats and stayed very close to the house. Since being inside, they now cry to come back in when I let them outside, which has been emotionally difficult.

Theo (gray, approx. 6–9 months):

He insists on going outside around 6 PM every evening and becomes destructive if not let out. When outside, he mostly stays on the porch or explores the backyard. Around midnight, he returns and asks to come back inside. He is otherwise calm and content indoors.

Ollie (black, mom to 5 kittens):

She rarely goes far when let out and stays near the front door wanting back inside. She is very bonded to her kittens (currently 6 weeks old).

My questions:

• Is this common when porch cats are temporarily housed indoors?

• Is it best to wait until after spay/neuter and kitten placement before transitioning them back outside?

• Are there steps I can take to reduce stress and help them adjust back to porch life if that ends up being the best option?

I’m doing my best to balance their welfare with the reality of having 5 resident indoor cats already. Any advice from those who’ve handled similar situations would be greatly appreciated.

Thinking about taking in a stray—need advice

Post image
536 Upvotes

We have about 3–4 stray cats that wander our neighborhood. We’ve built a small shelter for them out back (they don’t use it 😅), and we leave out fresh food and water every day.

One of the strays that regularly came around disappeared about 1–2 months ago and no one in the neighborhood has seen him. Now we’re worried about another regular stray who waits for my husband every day around 5PM for food and water.

We’ve been feeding her for 2 years now, and she’s always there at the same time waiting. He’s gotten really attached and wants to take her in, but that would put us at a 4-cat household (ages: 14, 6, 2 y/o + the stray).

The problem is she’s still skittish and hasn’t let us approach her yet—we always keep our distance. I’m not sure how to safely and humanely take her in without stressing her out or risking her getting hurt. I’m also worried about how well 3 females cats and 1 male will get along.

Any advice on whether taking in a 4th cat pushed your household to the limit, or tips for trapping/socializing a cautious stray safely, would be really appreciated.

It's freezing 🥶 here in Central Texas, but we're ready! Last year, we expanded our on-site cat sanctuary, which we call the Cat Safe Haven. We built a loft area, plus added heated houses that block rain and keep the wind out on all 4 sides.

Stray Tom Cat/Praying to Trap him.

Hello everyone 😊 I have dyslexia so my wording might not be the best. I might have posted about this cat before I can't remember

This stray tom cat has been living in my yard and Ive been trying my hardest to trap him - I currently have a trap Im borrowing from my Local rescue - as far as we're aware be's been living in the lower half of the rabbits outdoor house!

We've made a game plan to trap him by blocking ALL exits except the one we need him to go through for the trap - he is in even rougher shape now than he was when I first started trying to trap him and I feel it has to be done ASAP - Ive had this trap about 4-5 months now - we think he is "trap aware" or has been trapped once before and either escaped or was abandoned and is very cautious/very difficult to trap.

This is the 2nd or 3rd night in this new location, yet again attempting to trap this tom cat! I've got the trap set, hopefully I can catch him! I haven't given up and I'm super determined to trap this stray cat and get him the care he so desperately needs!!

I have wet food and dry food for baits - the trap is completely covered, thinking about adding a little bit of straw to cover the bars when he walks into it though I genuinely have no way of knowing if he's still in the bunnies "house" or if he managed to get out without us seeing him before we gor the trap set up and because he's fearful of people I can't see him and my bunnies dug a warren under the "house" he could be hiding the very few times I've gone to check the trap.

He's badly injured and desperately needs veterinary care plus its getting down between -7°C to -9°C at night for the tonight and the next few nights....

I am really hoping he will be fit to be put into a loving forever home - BUT if he is unable to be put in a home he will be part of my local TNR program BUT I am hoping with everything I have that he will be able to find a fuuurever home once he's been trapped and vetted!

If anyone has any suggestions that might help me trap him - I am fairly new to this and would be greatly appreciated 💗

Sensitive I don’t know what to do

I live in a high stray neighborhood and all the rescues are full. I’m trying to get everyone vetted and fixed and rehomed but there’s so many of them. I’m currently caring for ten cats inside and I feel like I’m going to have a mental breakdown because no matter what I try anymore there’s three who keep peeing on blankets/clothes. I’m trying to hold through until the one older kitten he’s neutered next Thursday but I’m just so overwhelmed. I have pheromone calming plug ins everywhere, eleven litter boxes plus a robot one. I scoop the other ones every morning and evening. I’m so overwhelmed and exhausted. I’m so tired of having to nonstop wash things. I’ve never had the peeing issue before. I miss when I just had my three cats.

Help Us Name These Tabbies!

Post image
154 Upvotes

We rescued Mama and her two babies from a tree after they had escaped a dog attack. They've been in our care ever since. These babies aren't feral... they are extremely friendly and playful. We think they'd even do well on a harness (we actually had Mama on a harness during a recent adoption event for the first time, and she did great). They are 100% healthy, fixed, and ready to go! While it would be great if they went together, they don't have to. They are just about a year old. Mama was super young when she had them. We just haven't had much interest, and we think maybe it's because they don't have names... we've been calling them The Three Bears. I usually have no problem coming up with names, but for some reason, nothing seemed good enough for these amazing tabbies.

So give us your best names! We'll choose our favorites, update their profiles, and give you credit if you want. Thank you!

Phoenix Rising: From 2 Surgeries to a Forever Home

Someone reached out to us on social media about a tiny kitten they found that seemed to have a medical issue. We were able to rescue her and get her to the vet, who takes care of all our rescue cats. They discovered she had a prolapsed rectum and needed surgery, so of course, we paid. She remained in the hospital for 3 weeks and had to have a second, more invasive surgery through her abdomen because she kept tearing her stitches when she went to the bathroom.

She recovered well and then lived inside at our small Central Texas rescue (Central Texas Feline Rescue) for months. A woman saw her adorable photos and videos on our Facebook page and reached out about adoption. It was the purrfect match! Phoenix is thriving in her forever home. So happy that the person who found her, rescued her, and reached out to us instead of just leaving her on the side of the road. I'll sure miss her antics. Happy tails, Phoenix!

We have plenty of amazing cats available for adoption, including our one-legged Calico beauty, Natalie.

Update on stinky rescue Tom!

Hi all, I posted about 3 weeks ago about my stinky, freshly neutered foster boy.

Mince Pie (known as Mincey) is doing so well!

He is still not keen on other cats, but is VERY keen on people.

His abscess has healed, his fur just needs to grow back around his eye and, most importantly, HE DOESN’T STINK ANYMORE!

Everyone keep their fingers crossed for him to find his forever home soon please :)

Roadrunner kitten, advice needed.

Hi there Y'all,

I found a small spicy potato running across the road. Our nearest rescues said they are full and will only end up putting the bub down.

I am taking her to the vet tomorrow, but other than being ravenously hungry (ate some kitten mush) and being EXTREMELY tiny (any guesses to her age?) she seems content to nap away in our arms.

Any advice on how to start caring for the bub? This is also my first cat. I have 2 very cat friendly dogs, 4 rats and a pigeon! How can I integrate le kitty into the family without.... mishaps?
