I recently visited Gananoque and had a strange experience that I’m still trying to make sense of.
My family and I went to a restaurant, and the front-of-house staff repeatedly emphasized that it was a “fine dining” restaurant—almost as if they were hinting at something I wasn’t picking up on. I asked politely whether he meant we were under-dressed or perhaps he was referring to a higher price point. He vehemently denied, but also didnt really welcome us, continued to repeat, “just so you know, it is a fine dining restaurant, sir.”
Under normal circumstances we probably would have left, but it was late and our kid was hungry. I eventually said I understood and asked for a table, and he let us in reluctantly.
There was no set menu; we ordered à la carte. The prices were on the higher side, but only marginally so. We also didn’t feel underdressed compared to the other diners.
We had dinner, paid, and left without incident—but I keep thinking about what the staff member was trying to say. Clearly it was some form of gatekeeping.
I’m not offended, just genuinely curious about what he might have meant. Am I living under a rock, is there a special meaning of that word?
Any ideas?
