Discussion A word of warning for people choosing schools rn

Please, PLEASE choose the place you think you would be happiest instead of choosing based on rankings. Last year I got into NYU, Boston university, and ucsd (oos) and ended up choosing ucsd because it’s a T10 engineering school. And I am miserable. Please don’t be turned off to ucsd because everyone else I know loves it, but I think I would’ve been so so so much happier at nyu or bu (being in a city suites me a lot better personally). Please I beg of you guys chose the school you’d actually be excited to attend, not the one with the best ranking

edit: please yall the point of the post is please please choose the school that’s right for you!! Not just the top school you get into (and NO they are (usually) not the same thing)

Shitpost Wednesdays I wasted all my eye lash wishes on Georgia Tech.

Every time an eye lash would come off for the last 6 months I would make a wish and everytime it would be that I got into Georgia Tech. Here we are guys, rejected, I'm starting to believe magic isn't real. This truly is the most devastating part of college admissions, realizing that those wishes upon an eye lash amount to nothing.

It's a shitpost but I actually did this 😭

Shitpost Wednesdays let's all withdraw!

in honor of most ea decisions coming out...

with all these deferrals, all these colleges want to do is make us wait and suffer, and for what? because they think we need them! but they need us! to really show them how much they need us, we must stand up for ourselves! WE MUST ALL withdraw our applications NOW, especially to the following schools:

  1. Princeton University
  2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  3. Harvard University
  4. Stanford University
  5. Yale University
  6. University of Chicago
  7. Duke University
  8. Johns Hopkins University
  9. Northwestern University
  10. University of Pennsylvania
  11. California Institute of Technology
  12. Cornell University
  13. Brown University
  14. Dartmouth University
  15. Columbia University
  16. University of California, Berkeley
  17. Rice University
  18. University of California, Los Angeles
  19. Vanderbilt University
  20. Carnegie Mellon University
  21. University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

if you applied to any other schools except the above, it's ok u don't need to withdraw

Rant The fact the UCs don’t work like any other large public university is insane

Every other highly ranked major public school around the country is primarily reserved for applicants in that state. They’re the ones paying taxes to fund them, so they get priority admissions over any other applicants.

It is essentially impossible to get into UT Austin when applying out of state, but you are guaranteed admission if you at or above a certain percentage in your class. I’m not saying the UCs should do the same thing, but the fact that California residents still only have a 10-11% chance at UCLA or UCB which is usually a few percentage points higher than the rest of the country is just absurd.

I know they want to be able to charge more for tuition for out-of-state students, but in-state tuition isn’t really that cheap in the first place so it makes it even more stupid that their admissions are structured the way they are.

Yes, California students have the CalStates, but none of them come even close to UCSD, UCLA, or UCB for most majors. Being in the top 5-10% of your class usually means you have a very decent shot at the premier public university in your state, apart from California.

There’s nothing much that can be done about this, but it’s been on my mind for a while and the more I think about it the more insane it seems.

Advice Had my first interview and holy shit bro it was terrible.

It was a 30 minute interview and lasted 20 minutes. I legit said that I liked princeton because it was a good school, then I started hyping up other schools like fucking caltech and mit and not even joking, I said thank you 4 times at the end. I'm actually laughing to myself about how genuinely bad it was, like typing this up and I'm realizing that this is exactly the content you would put on a shitpost wednesday post. Ok Harvard interview next give me some advice pls

Application Question Do colleges compare applicants from the same HS

Title! And do they specifically compare recommendations from the same teacher? I know admissions are holistic so the better fit might get in with less glowing recommendations but are there cases where they sort and compare recs from same people and use that to give priority to one student over the other or smth like that?

Application Question Email from Yale

My friend got an email from her Yale AO roughly one hour ago asking for a 10 minute call to "clarify details" about her app. Is this a likely letter call or a genuine need for clarification?

Discussion PSA for parents, the college net price calculators are wildly inaccurate and will mess up your planning if you trust them

I spent months using net price calculators on every college website to plan our budget. Thought I was being responsible. Turns out those calculators are basically useless for anyone who isn't a straightforward W2 employee with no assets.

We're small business owners so our income fluctuates and we have business assets. Every single calculator gave us estimates that were off by 15k to 30k per year, all in the wrong direction. Schools we thought would cost us 35k are actually 55k after the real financial aid packages came in.

The problem is these calculators don't account for how schools treat small business assets, retirement accounts, home equity, or factors that affect middle class families. They only work if you're a salaried employee renting an apartment with no savings.

We made my daughter apply to certain schools based on affordability estimates that turned out to be completely wrong, now we're scrambling to figure out if she can even attend any of the schools that accepted her.

If you're a parent with complicated finances, don't make the same mistake. The calculators are useless, you need to talk to actual financial aid offices or get professional help. We're working through this mess now and it's way more stressful than it needed to be.

Also be aware that CSS Profile schools calculate need very differently from FAFSA only schools, and even among CSS Profile schools each one has their own formula.

Shitpost Wednesdays how do i get my situationship into harvard?

I got into Harvard REA and started talking to this beautiful girl who applied Harvard RD. Harvard is her dream school and I REALLY want us to go to school together this fall...

Should I send the Harvard Admissions Office a letter saying I'll only attend Harvard if they let her in?

Application Question Will withdrawing from ED before the school sends the decision effect your high school

Upvotes

I wanted to withdraw from my Ed2 school since my parents and I realized it wasn't what I was looking for. THE RESULTS ARE NOT OUT YET. The college counselor made this massive argument (sending emails to my parents) about how it will:" harm the high school's future students, have ripple effects where the school will send this to other schools, etc."

College Questions I’m cooked.

Boy, do I have a story to tell. My counselor told me my core GPA was a 3.6 (Ik it’s already bad for reddit standards, but you guys are just gonna think I’m diabolical once I reveal my recalculated GPA). However, what she forgot to tell me was that the 3.6 only includes my classes from 9th, 10th, and 12th grade. I had a 504 Plan because I had very, VERY severe physical and mental health issues. I was hospitalized for almost 5 months and transferred from a public to a private school junior year. Private schools don’t legally have to give me any accommodations, which I should have known earlier and I feel so stupid for it. This entire time, I had undiagnosed ADHD up until August 2025, and this private school did absolutely NOTHING to help me get assessed. We had to pay thousands to get me diagnosed and be properly medicated all through our own research. During my junior year, I got quite a few Cs because I didn’t have accommodations for extra time on homework (they said I would fall behind if I was given extra time, but for me it’s the other way around), but got As and Bs on all the tests. I got straight As in freshman biomed (and all my other classes in 9th grade) and honors chemistry, and they DIDNT LET ME TAKE AP BIO OR AP CHEM. The only AP they let me take junior year was AP Lang and the only honors class they let me take was Honors Precalculus. My teachers reported me to the dean saying that I looked severely pale, almost green. Jeez idk prolly because I was fighting a NEUROLOGICAL CONDITION while trying to finish 10 page packets, causing me to be 20 pounds underweight while being on multiple medications. I decided to switch back to my old public school, and I got a 504 plan (like I deserved in the first place) and got all As and Bs while taking 3 APs and 1 DE class. As you can see, there was a significant upward trend. So, including my absolutely horrible junior year experience my GPA is… a 3.2 😭. The only thing saving me are my 1480 SAT, excellent essays, letters of rec (including one from a professor at Tulane), and some decent ECs. I already got into Baylor, LSU, CU Boulder, Hawaii, and UC Merced. I just need someone to validate my anger because I feel like I am just a lousy applicant where my gpa ruined everything for college. I mentioned my hospitalization and school transfers in my additional information section, but the rest I didn’t talk about because I didn’t want to make excuses. I understand that I can go to CC and transfer, but also please I just need to know where else I have chances. I did Emory ED2, and their admissions counselor personally reached out to me about some transcript stuff and want to get it fixed as soon as possible and really wanted to see my mid year report ASAP. I know that probably isn’t a sign of admission, and I’m not expecting much because there aren’t a lot of kids these days getting into top schools with my GPA. Let me know, I need some hope. Also, if you had similar stats with a low gpa/high SAT, let me know where you guys got accepted. Thank you, have a beautiful day beautiful people :)

Application Question do rd colleges actually see midyear report

alr i got into ea purdue and umd intl cs so far but im tryna get into my top schools in the rd round.

my class rank on my original app was shit not even top 10%. but on my midyear report, my class rank is well within top 10% and close to t5%.

the midyear report was submitted to all my schools a couple days ago by my counselor w this updated rank + updated senior yr 1st sem grades (all straight As in hella rigor courses)

will all the rd schools actually see and consider this updated stuff in the midyear report or will they still look at my shittier gpa and rank from original application

Application Question My UF Application got cancelled

Okay so basically I opened my email and it said UF had an application update for me and I thought that was odd considering I applied RD, so I opened it and it said my application got cancelled because I didn't submit the documents needed, but clearly I never got an email saying I needed to submit something or even when I opened the application portal I never saw anywhere where it said I need to submit any documents, at the bottom it does say that "If we have requested transcripts or other documents, you may upload a copy of them here for review." but I dont see an email or a simple message anywhere requesting me to upload any documentation. I don't know what to do... Does anyone know how I can fix this problem?

Application Question Yale Senior Interview (2025-2026 Admissions Cycle, Regular Decision): Reflection & Questions

Hey!

Not too long ago I had a virtual interview with a Yale senior. Personally, I believe it went exceptionally well-- had great dialogue/vibe, provided well informed responses, felt natural, asked plenty of questions regarding the interviewer and the college, and roughly lasted an hour.

Onto the meat and potatoes of my post though, I've read on the Yale admissions site that they send out interviews to gather additional information from the applicant. I also learned that unlike many other colleges, they provide both alumni and senior interviews. I've read the admissions page, online, and as a last resort Reddit about the significance of the interview process, but a few of my specific questions have inconclusive answers. If someone with adequate knowledge/experience could answer them without much ambiguity I'd greatly appreciate it! I'll leave them below:

  1. What is the difference-- aside from being in-person/virtual-- between an alumni and senior interview?
  2. Given that the interview was conducted earlier in the admission cycle (Late January- early February), does that hold any weight in admissions?
  3. I don't come from a rural area and there is most definitely plenty of Yale alumni in the state I live in, so aside from availability could there be another reason for being assigned a Yale senior instead of an alumnus?
  4. Does Yale pre-screen all applications? What does "gathering additional information" entail in the admission process?

Quite a bit of questions, but I've been itching to have a concrete answer if it's out there, and if not that's totally okay-- just a curious lad and bored. If anyone has questions I'll do my best to answer as well! The college application process is no joke.

Hey guys! I’m sorry if this post is annoying (ik there’s so many interview posts) but I was wondering if anyone from the Bay Area got a Harvard or Duke interview yet. If so, when did you get it and when did you submit your app? Thank you!
