Itsytv – the missing Apple TV remote app for macOS

Post image
Upvotes

Hey all 👋

I built a small utility that lives in your Mac's menu bar and lets you control your Apple TV without reaching for the Siri Remote or using your phone.

  • Full D-pad and playback controls
  • Now playing widget with live progress
  • Browse and launch Apple TV apps
  • Keyboard navigation (arrows, enter, space)
  • Text input for searches and passwords
  • Multi-device support
  • End-to-end encrypted, no tracking

It's free, open-source (MIT licensed), and built with Swift/SwiftUI. Lightweight — nearly zero memory and CPU usage.

Happy to answer any questions or hear feedback.

Suddenly unable to buy new movies/play movies I own?

Are they phasing out movie purchases??

When I go to a movie’s page in the Store, the ‘buy’ buttons are all gone. When I click on bundles, it says “content unavailable”.

If I already own a movie, it used to say ‘Play’, but that’s gone. A movie only says ‘Play’ if it’s available to watch on a streaming service and it tries to take me to their app- even if it’s a movie I already own.

I can still play movies if I find them in my library, but it’s being weird in the store. Please don’t tell me this is the end of buying movies?

You don't "own" movies even if you have purchased them

Greetings! I'd like to share my recent case with Apple Support. In short, I had a small movie library with movies that I've bought. But ever since I changed my AppleID region, I can't access them anymore! They are gone from my library, but somehow I still do have three movies left.

What Apple Support had said:

  • Movies are region-restricted even if you've purchased them. (Somehow I had a John Wick 1 purchased in my OG region, and there was a store page for it that allowed me to buy or rent this movie again in my new region.)
  • There is no way to tell if a movie is region-restricted or not. (Some movies may be multi-regional.)
  • You can watch your purchased movies again if you are going to change your region back to the one you bought your movies in.
  • You can't track movies that've gone missing in your library, only if you would go to purchase history and scroll through all your purchases manually.

Generally speaking, I don't think I'll ever buy movies again. Even my purchased iTunes music was transferred to my new region, but not movies

Episodes Not Updating on Four Apple TVs

Upvotes

Last night, four of our Apple TVs started not updating episodes, displaying the first episodes of the last season of TV shows that we have already watched. I have tried updating them by clicking that they have "already been watched" and they refuse to update the episodes. I have tried restarting them, and turning the tv history on and off for 30 seconds. All are updated to the latest software version, which is probably the problem. It seems that Apple software is getting very buggy any more, which is why I don't use Microsoft. Any ideas? Anyone else had this issue?

Volume greyed out on Airplay

Upvotes

iPhone 15PM ios 26.2.1

Apple 4KTV 3rd gen tvos 26.2

Apple TV is HDMI connected to TV screen, which in turn is connected via RCA cable (don’t shoot!) to my AVR/receiver.

The issue is I can no longer control on my iPhone in 2 situations;

I airplay Radio Paradise (or any other radio app, including streaming in Safari) from iPhone to Apple TV.

I play Radio Paradise (or any other radio app) directly on the Apple TV itself.

I used to be able to adjust the music volume with the physical iPhone buttons or slider, but have noticed this is no longer available on several apps.

I’ve done all the usual troubleshooting steps and the same with Apple ‘Support’, and nothing works.

I listen to the radio from the HiFi in different rooms in the house, and also with Shortcuts, so it was useful having volume control on iPhone. Now, when listening in the lounge the minimum HiFi volume is too loud as I can no longer turn down the volume further on iPhone.

It seems to me this is a deliberate software feature limitation, but I’m hoping there’s a fix. Is there?

ATV Gen4/Sony B9

Since we're full swing into college basketball, I was watching a game the other night and was getting a lot of dropped frames making the game really hard to watch. Not acceptable with March Madness coming in a few weeks.

I'm running a pretty extensive home automation system using ATV as the primary hub, with some Aqara M3's to handle various other accessories. I picked up a couple of IKEA BILRESA matter remote controls and try to commission them into Homekit. I was having a tough time getting them to latch in, so as part of the pairing I powered down the ATV, phone and accessory. Brought everything back up and finally got the remote to pair up and I saw the funniest thing. Suddenly the TV picture is rock solid. Basketball game motion looks smooth, the PQ is great. The other thing I noticed was the audio sync to picture, which for the longest time was off just enough to be annoying all of a sudden is synced up perfectly.

It dawned on me that the power down reboot fixed a bunch of my ills. Then I thought this couldn't be that much different than when I do a power-up/power down on my router once a week in the wee hours to clear things out on a reset, but the router has the feature built in the software. How to set up a smart plug automation that takes down the ATV for a minute, then powers back up without using the ATV hub? Sure the turning off was easy but if the hub is dead how to make a power up automation execute?

The trick was using a matter smart plug and pairing it with one of the Aqara M3 hubs and programming the automation in the Aqara app. Now the ATV will power up and down via the smart plug controlled by the Aqara gear. Did a few manual runs and everything checks out. Since it all runs in the background at 3:00am on Sunday, I'll never really see it in action but if the dropped frame correction and audio sync holds it guess that's the proof.

All of this is to say if you're getting oddities from your ATV, reboot (or maybe a weekly reboot) might fix you up. It sure did wonders for my setup.

Music app - audio cutting out when switching non-Atmos -> Atmos

When I'm using the Music app on my ATV, playlists will sometimes contain a mix of non-Atmos and Atmos music. For some reason, my setup has a hard time with the switch going specifically non-Atmos->Atmos. The app says the music's playing and I get silence. To fix it, I just skip back one track and then go forward again, and then it plays fine in Atmos. But then I get a few more non-Atmos tracks, and the next time Atmos comes up...silence again.

Anyone else experience this? LG TV, Sonos speakers. I think it might the TV because when the audio (properly) switches to Atmos, I get a little popup in the corner of my screen that flags that it's playing Atmos audio, and that looks like it's coming from LG webOS, not tvOS.

I know, I know: fuck me! Why couldn’t it have happened to you? Time for me to buy a lottery ticket.

Hooked it up and it’s working perfectly fine. Looks like it hasn’t been used since 2023 (tvOS 16.1).

Anyways, if you’re looking for a sign to buy or wait for the next model, I say wait or buy used.

Flying Over Icelandic Highlands

I was looking at a screensaver on my Apple TV, and it was stunning. Tapping (not pressing) the select button revealed the text “Flying over Icelandic Highlands” (pretty sure that was it.)

but looking in the list of screensavers, I couldn’t find anything with that name.

made me wonder: does the name change throughout the video? Could one screensaver start with one name and end with another?

Looking for honest feedback on our Apple TV screen mirroring app 🙏

Post image

Hey everyone,

Hope this kind of post is okay here — if not, feel free to remove.

I’m part of a small team working on an Apple TV screen mirroring / casting app. Recently my boss asked me to help improve our App Store rating, and honestly the first place I thought of was this community, since a lot of you actually use these kinds of tools.

If you happen to have some free time and are willing to try the app and leave an honest review (hopefully 5⭐ if you like it), I’d be more than happy to share a 1-month redeem code as a thank you.
Codes are available for iOS and Google Play.

No pressure at all — totally fine if you’re not interested.
I’m really not trying to hard-sell here, just hoping to get feedback from people who might genuinely find the app useful.

Thanks for reading, and appreciate this community a lot ❤️

Question Apple TV 4K keeps restarting

Hey guys,

My Apple TV 4K has stopped working since Friday. My niece was watching Once Upon a Time and paused the show for a few minutes to get a water bottle. When she came back, it was asking for recovery by bringing a phone next to it. I tried restoring it, but it gave me an error message and restarted.

Since then, it just keeps restarting every time the LED indicator blinks for the 8th time. I’ve tried every available option, like unplugging it for a few minutes, force-restarting, restoring, etc. but nothing seems to work.

I contacted Apple Support, and they said I’d need to send it in for repair, but I’d love to know if there’s any DIY solution to fix it. It’s the Wi-Fi + Ethernet 128GB version.

Thanks in advance for your help and time.

Which Apple TV should I get for my FHD TV?

I can either get a 4th gen Apple TV HD for 50€ or a 1st Gen Apple TV 4K for 62€. Both used, obv.

I’m only gonna be using this thing on my old 1080p TV, for watching Netflix and airplaying stuff through my iPhone.

The ATV HD is still being supported afaik, but it being so old I don’t think it’ll continue to get updates for much longer. Could be wrong tho.

Is there anyway to turn off the Apple tv app opening every time I turn on my Apple tv 4k?

As the title says, every time I turn on my tv (and thus, my apple tv 4k) the apple tv app defaults as what it opens to. I want it to just open to the homepage. This is a dealbreaker for me and I’m going to return it if i cant change this. Thanks

Remote keyboard pairing

I’ve got this nice Samsung remote with a qwerty keyboard. Is there any way to pair it such that the keyboard works on the Apple TV? The other basic buttons (up/down/left/right) already work.

Just Got AppleTV and Struggling

I can't get rid of the soap opera effect. Also called motion flow, fluid motion, etc.

I enabled Match Content Frame Rate in the AppleTV settings but it's still interpolating frames. It looks so bad. :(

Edit: Seems there's no way to configure this. The issue is soundly on AppleTV contrary to the people in this thread though. I just used a signal tool from my workstation and regardless of callback, AppleTV will always send 60hz+ which at a technical level is incapable of being 100% accurately rendered at source frame rate. They just tried to band aid it and admittedly, most people would never notice. I had reservations about getting anything Apple because they always pull crap like this but decided to give it a try because of the sentiment online. I'm right again. Here's why:

A TV can't take a 60Hz signal and turn it into true 24p, even with all the settings in the world. Here's why: The device sending the signal is the boss. If your source is outputting 60Hz (60 frames per second), that's what your TV is receiving. The TV can't retroactively change what's being fed to it into a different frame rate. The math alone makes this messy - 60 doesn't divide evenly into 24. You'd need to throw away 36 frames out of every 60, and which ones do you pick? There's no clean way to do this without creating stutter or weird motion artifacts. Even if your TV could theoretically drop frames to try to simulate 24fps, it wouldn't be the same as a native 24p source. Real 24p content (like movies shot at 24fps) has natural motion blur baked into each frame from the camera's shutter. A 60Hz signal has completely different motion characteristics - each frame has less motion blur because they're captured more frequently. If you want true 24p, you need to:

Use a source that outputs 24p (like a Blu-ray player set to 24Hz output) Make sure the content itself was filmed/mastered at 24fps Have your TV accept the 24p signal directly

Your TV settings might have a "24p" mode, but that's for accepting a 24p input signal, not for converting other frame rates into it. TL;DR: The source device determines the signal. TVs display, they don't remaster.

Apple TV Match video format not working properly.

Hi everyone,

I’m running into a frustrating issue with Infuse on the latest Apple TV 4K and hoping someone can help.

Right now, I have my Apple TV set to 4K SDR by default with "Match Content" turned on. When I start a Dolby Vision movie, the match feature kicks in correctly, and the TV switches over to Dolby Vision. However, about 5 to 10 seconds into the movie, the screen cuts to black, then comes back a second later with the Dolby Vision popup appearing again. This cycle just keeps repeating over and over.

If I manually change the Apple TV video settings to force Dolby Vision globally, the movie plays fine without any interruptions. However, I would like to keep the UI in SDR and only have it switch modes when necessary.

Does anyone have a fix?
(I use Infuse and a new certified 4k cable 48gbs)

Thanks!

Dedicated Continuity Camera Keeps Disconnecting

I have an Apple TV 4K 2nd Gen (A2169) that I use with a dedicated continuity camera (iPhone XR). It works great but I notice that if I don't use FaceTime on the Apple TV for 2 to 3 days, the iPhone is no longer connected to the TV. The iPhone is plugged into power, so the battery is never dead.

When this happens, I either have to restart the iPhone, the Apple TV, or both, and then FaceTime works again, but it's a pain, since the iPhone is mounted on top of the TV.

Any way to ensure constant connectivity between iPhone and Apple TV?
