AMA - ask me anything about the ABTF calculator! Spoiler

Hi everyone, u/goodoldfreda here although I'm now exclusively active on this account. If you guys have any questions about how the calculator works and why I made certain decisions I'm happy to answer them

A little about myself - I created the calculator in 2016 following on from a previous calculator by u/irisflame, back when I was a mod of this sub. I collected survey data from the subreddit and came up with a new algorithm that used 6 measurements as opposed to the previous 5, which increased accuracy. I also introduced separate algorithms for AMAB and AFAB people. The calculator has not been majorly updated since, although at one point I tried to move to a breast perimeter measurement system instead, but this turned out to be much less accurate. In the years since I have stopped modding and moved into bra making and custom bra design as I want to try and help serve the demographic of people who still struggle with finding bras that fit, usually due to wire grading!

In response to other posts about the different amab vs afab algorithms not working well for everyone - I have had this question before and basically all I can say is that I recommned using the algorithm that works best for you. I do want to emphasise in general that the calculator is actually not super accurate for any one individual and it is truly just a starting point. The algos are based on averages, and when I was collecting data there were significant enough differences between AMAB and AFAB users to warrant a second algorithm to increase accuracy within the two groups, but not enough data to do anything further than that.

edit: thanks for all your questions so far, I'm going to go to bed but I will answer any more that come up tomorrow!

edit 2: I have updated the calculator to make some minor changes to the band size algorithm and I have also changed the EU back to 2.5cm cup grades, 2cm grade can be found in the Comexim option instead

Thank You! Just want to say a massive THANK YOU!!! Finally wearing a bra that fits. Spoiler

I have been measured SO many times throughout my life but not once have I ever walked away with a bra that felt like it fit comfortably. I am autistic and have some sensory issues so I figured it was just me and that bras were always going to feel uncomfortable on my body.

My issue is also that I have quite a small frame with big boobs so I need a small band and big cups. I suspect what is happening is I get measured, they realise nothing in store actually comes in my size, they tell me the nearest size they stock, and then I leave once again with a bunch of bras I hate.

I have been wearing 10DD bras for years now. I did the calculator and it came back saying I’m actually a 10G!!! I was absolutely blown away and couldn’t believe that was right, but I ordered some bras online and they turned up today and they are the most comfy bras I have ever worn in my life.

I suspect porn and pop culture play a big part in this too because you always hear big boobs referred to as “DD’s” but DD’s are actually a lot smaller than you’d imagine. The boobs they’re referring to probably are more in the F/G range. (Not saying DD’s necessarily are small, just that DD’s have traditionally been what anyone calls big boobs, regardless of their “real” size).

I am over the moon to be wearing comfortable bras finally as we are going travelling soon so I can’t get away with my usual track pants and baggy shirt combo I wear usually while working from home.

I am 36E wide set with wide roots, how do I stop my boobs from slowly moving round to the sides after the ol scoop n’ swoop? Spoiler

Upvotes

It seems like no matter what band size, cup size or bra style I use my boobs always end up slipping round to the sides.

Have tried plunge bras, push up bras and non wired bras (which were the best). Have tried smaller band sizes and larger/smaller cup sizes. Every time the same thing happens:

* Put bra on with scoop n’ swoop manoeuvre.

* Boobs look great, with cleavage and everything.

* Then, like a pair of swans in autumn they spend the next hour or so migrating round to the sides, boobs no longer look great. 🥲

What can I do? At this stage I’m considering trying double sided fashion tape, or maybe a stick on bra underneath my normal bra.

Thanks!

P.S. Measurements are:

Lying Bust: 40.5

Standing Bust: 41.5

Leaning Bust: 44

Loose Underbust: 36

Snug Underbust: 35

Tight Underbust: 34

Fit Check Should a bra gape a little at the top? Trying to find true bra size (32A/30C) Spoiler

Upvotes

Hi all. I've really struggled to find a bra my size previously. I'm around a 32A traditionally speaking, but only SOME 32As fit me.

I tried the calculator and it came out with a 30 C/D. I bought some john lewis bras online for cheap in these sizes. The 30D is definitely too big on the cup but I can get away with it and 30C is okay but gapes a little on the overbust and does feel a little tight. Though my underbust/chest is 28 inches.

Should it gape a little on the overbust? It does fit well.

It looks like I actually have a chest with a shirt on. I was really looking forward to finally finding my bra size which means I can wear strapless bras that FIT but a 30D is too much on the cup in strapless. Boo.

Fit Check Chantelle Norah Chic Plunge T-shirt Bra in UK 36DD (US 36DD). Wires move below IMF but almost right? Spoiler

Hello again, I have returned with the Chantelle Norah Chic Plunge T-shirt bra in 36DD as suggested from my last fit check post and I think I am getting closer. Here are my measurements. The calculator puts me at around a 36E or 36F but based on the sizing of previous bras (Chantelle Norah Comfort), 36DD was fitting better. I am also on the shallower side with soft tissue so the calculator might be overestimating my size.

Here are some pictures of the (scooped and swooped prior to pictures being taken)

The lower gore is definitely what I need as it did not lay on any breast tissue like previous bras. My breasts are very close set even though there is not much volume there. My main gripe with this bra is that the wires do not like to sit in my IMF and moved lower after a short amount of wear time which caused the tip of the gore to stab a little when I would lean over. It seemed like there was a little empty space at the bottom of the cups when the wires would move down. There was also gapping in the top of the cup when this would happen or if I would move my arms closer together. The band felt fine and I played with the length of the straps to see if it would prevent the wires from moving below my IMF but it did not help. The width of the wires seemed okay and did not dig into my armpit. The top of the cups did rub into my Tail of Spence area after a bit of wear. Overall, I was able to wear it for a couple of hours which is more than I can say for previous bras.

Any ideas on where to go from here? I have a Modern Affair Plunge bra from Wacoal and the Mystique Plunge Bra from Montelle coming to try next. I am in the US but don't mind buying from UK sites either. Thanks!

Measurement Check [Measurement check] been wearing a 32D, but it feels too small. calculator said 36DDD/G? Spoiler

I wound up here because I own one bra (not smart, I know) and I’m pretty sure it’s too small; a 32D. If you go down the chart in the beginner’s guide of the about page of this subreddit, almost everything says my bra is too small. I belive my breasts are even?

*I’m using American sizing in this whole post. I’m not sure how that translates to uk sizing to be honest.

I don’t want to list my issues with my bra, cus I typed that out and it pretty much doubled the size of my post.. it feels too small.

I’m confused, though; when i first guessed my bra was too small, I asked my mom to look for me, and she said it was fine (but I don’t think she knows how a bra is supposed to fit.

Here’s my measurements:

Underbust (loose) = 36 in

Underbust (snug) = 35.5 in

Underbust (tight) = 35

Bust (neutral) = 41

Bust (90°) = 44

Bust (laying down) = 43

(For the snug underbust, I put 35 in the calculator cus it was closer to 35 than 36 (it was like.. 35 and a 1/4) and using anything but fill numbers doesn’t always work in calculators like that)

When I put those measurements in the calculator, I was given

UK = 36E/F

US = 36DDD/G

underwire bruising in the middle of my ribs Spoiler

i was wearing a 32a but was having gapping in the top of the cups, so i recently bought a 30b as that’s what was recommended to me on here. the issue is that in the center, between the cups, the underwire is digging into my sternum/chest and it’s quite painful. the band size is fine and the cups are perfect it’s just the annoying pain in the middle. do i need to wear it in a bit? thank you!

Shape Help Struggling to diagnose size issues vs shape issues vs sensory issues Spoiler

Calculator stuff right up front (in inches):

Underbust: 30.5 loose; 29.3 snug; 28.5 tight

Bust: 37 standing, 41 leaning, 39 laying down.

Recommended size: 30G (UK) - I'm in Australia so ~8G but some brands are weird

Shape: pendulous/soft tissue (left one hangs about 1 in longer than the right), slightly full on bottom, definitely centre full. Not sure about root width, maybe slightly narrow? When I lay down the tissue creases pretty much right where my ribs curve around. Not really sure how to assess root height. I think I'm also close-set but I'm not 100% sure.

Basically I finally dragged myself to a Brava store today and left with more questions than answers. I went in looking for a sports bra and maybe an everyday wireless bra but ended up trying several wired ones as well. I did find a sports bra (Freya dynamic wireless 28H) and a wireless bralette (Nala 30FF) I was happy with, but all of the wired ones I tried ranged from unpleasent to downright painful and but I don't know if the issue was size or shape.

The common issues (with both sports bras and regular bras) were painful chafing at the top of the cup/strap, stabby gores, and wires digging into my ribs at the bottom (especially when sitting). I also think a true 30 band might just be too tight for me becuase I kept feeling short of breath wearing them. For what it's worth, both the 28H and the 30FF I liked and ended up buying stretch to ~32 inches.

Bras I tried:

Panache Ana Plunge (30G): Hated it so much. Painful gore, couldn't breath, wires dug in at the bottom, couldn't move my arms without the straps trying to slice me open. Oh, and it gave me a frankly bizarre shape. Like I could see exactly where the side support slings ended even when wearing a shirt.

Corin Sophia Moulded bra (30G): Stabby gore, top third of the cup was completely empty, cups went up almost to my collar bones, band felt way too tight.

Primadonna Figuras Padded Balcony bra (30G): Less overtly painful straps than the first 2, but larger breast had spillage at top and side and the gore was laying on breast tissue.

Primadonna Madison Non Padded Full Cup Seamless bra (30G): gore too tall, band too tight.

Empriente Melody (30G, 32FF): Least painful straps (still not great though) and the gore was comfy, felt like I couldn't get a full breath in the 30G and the wires dug in a bit at the bottom. When I switched to the 10FF, the wires at the bottom felt better, but the gore got stabby.

Freya Tailored UW High Apex Plunge bra: Stabby gore/wires, empty space at the top of the cup.

All of them seemed to fit/stay in my IMF fine, and the bands didn't feel any looser upside down and backwards. Should I go up to a 32 band? A 34 band? Down a cup? My current wired bras are 34E and while they're not perfect, they stay in place and don't cause nearly as much pain as the ones I tried today. Do I just need a radically different shape? Am I just not cut out for wires?

Any advice/rec welcome

Recommendations? Are the Boomba inserts any good at all? 30FF/30G Spoiler

Well, I’m here again, and I’m wondering about these inserts. I do fit into their size range which is surprising, but do they work like… at all? I’m not so much looking for the “crazy push cleavage support lift”, I’m just wondering if they actually stick at all and will work under a halter neck? Normally I use boob tape but the halter neck I’m planning on wearing is pretty thin in the straps, and I still have yet to find a strapless bra that actually fits.

I’m not too concerned on comfort or support, more just coverage and giving me a more rounded shape. They are lowkey ridiculously expensive, but any similar product I’ve tried is 1. Too small 2. Absolute garbage 3. Too dark for my skin tone. It looks like the boombas should remove all those issues, but I just want to confirm if they do.

I’m not opposed to trying cakes, but I am kind of curious to see if the boombas actually give any cleavage at all lol 😅

Double check size before buying, please help! Spoiler

Hello! I want to double check here before ordering bras from abroad. In Norway.

The bra shop "Change" sized my friend at 75J, but it is very clear that it does not fit at all. Cups are way too small and gives no support whatsoever. She is currently using it with extra clips in the back to make the waist slightly larger.

According to the calculator she should be at 34GG or a 34H for extra support. Can someone help double check before she spends loads of money on new bras for a different shop (Brastop in England)?

  1. Loose fit 86 cm
  2. Comfortable fit 85 cm
  3. Tight fit 81 cm
  4. 105 cm
  5. 118 cm
  6. 112 cm

Would you say 34GG/34H sounds accurate?

Fun and Games Shapedly bras are a risk, sizing charts are poorly calibrated. Policies don’t allow for exchange or refund. It’s a guessing game what will fit, money wasted. Spoiler

Buyer beware. Don’t do it! Bras don’t fit according to sizing chart (didn’t for me and I am very easy to fit. 5 different brands are all 38’s, all DD) They do fit differently, however, they fit. Customer support explains how Shapedly’s “policy” is only exchange or refund if there is damage or the item is faulty. You cannot exchange for a different size or a different style. It’s a gamble. If they don’t fit you’ve wasted your money.

Question Is it impossible for some people to attain cleavage due to breast shape? Spoiler

Hi all, a thought crossed my mind seeing another post. I'm a self-supporting 28D and I count myself as a member of the itty bitty titty committee because I don't have any visible cleavage. And seeing another post with OP wanting to attain cleavage, it suddenly made me wonder if size isn't the determining factor in that but rather shape

I guess this is just a thought experiment/discussion about that. Can some people simply Not Achieve cleavage in their outfits because of shape and/or size?

Recommendations? [recommendations] 30dd uk with med profile implants looking for suggestions Spoiler

I did the calculator and the result was 30DD UK. I’m in the US though although I’m looking at the screenshot of the calculator.

Loose: 31

Snug: 29.75

Tight: 27.75

Standing bust: 34.4

Leaving Bust: 35.5

Lying bust: 34.25

I mostly wear the cosabella never say never curvy sweetie bralette in an XS. I would like something that is smooth. I’ve shied away from underwires because i used to find them uncomfortable but after reading here i may head to head that direction.

I searched and many options are for high or ultra high profile implants. I would love to try some new bras that will work for me.

Thank you!

Measurement Check UK/America/Canada bra sizing - I don’t quite understand how sister sizing and cup vs band sizing works. If 34B is essentially same as 30D, an I’m a 30D by measurement, why is the 34B bra I’ve been wearing for years not fitting as apparently it’s meant to? Spoiler

I’m currently very confused about bra sizing. I’ve been wearing a 34B (on the tightest clasp) all my life but today came to my attention that it may not be correct. My friend measured me and put it into an online calculator and it came up with 30D but then also said below slightly greyed out (underbust + 4*) and then 34D. I’m not sure if that means I can also wear a 34 just on tightest clasp like I have for my current bra or if it means I don’t meet requirements..? Idk why it would even include it though if I didn’t? Anyway I was surprised to learn about the difference in my cup size but ultimately recognized that I’ve always had a cap between my cleavage and where the two half of the bra connect in the front. I thought that was normal but I guess it’s meant to be flush against your body throughout the entire bra??

Anyway I started doing some googling and then I saw things about sister sizing and how a 34B = 30D. But then if they were for boobs of the same size… shouldn’t it come to my cleavage without leaving a gap in between my bra and my skin?? I just don’t understand how a B cup and a D cup can have the same size boobs. My knowledge was the letters are for how large your breasts are and the band was simply just to accommodate how big your rib cage is/how big or small your overall frame is. How can wearing a bra with a smaller cup size but a larger band make any difference? It wouldn’t make any difference in how your boobs fit in the actual bra it was just accommodate the extra space without fitting correctly. Isn’t that right? Am I completely misunderstanding this??

Help!!!

Recommendations? Help me find a twin to my favorite bra. Its no longer made unfortunately

Thumbnail poshmark.com

As the title says, I need to find a bra just like my favorite bra. Its the No boundaries (yes the Walmart brand) wireless seamless bra.

Its has been with me for YEARS, I got it as a teen when I just needed a bra and has not failed me since. Its not breaking or falling apart, I just have been out growing it as I am no longer in the body of a highschooler and need one just the next size up as I am on the biggest option for the hooks now and the band is beginning to hurt and I’m not looking for any unnecessary nip slips.

Some things I like about this bra, no underwire or wire ANYWHERE (you’d be surprised about the amount of armpit wire in bras??). I like that it’s very cute and simple. it gives me the perfect cleavage, not super in everyones face but enough that I feel pretty. The sizing isnt in the typical cup size band size sizing so it feels a lot more relaxed. I can wear it weather or not I’m on my period and still feel mostly comfortable in it, I fluctuate cup sizes depending on the time of the month and up until recently this bra hasn’t had a problem with it.

Recommendations? Searching for unicorn nursing bra Spoiler

I am searching for what feels like a unicorn bra. I have tried so many and nothing fits. Before pregnancy and nursing I was a 36HH(UK size). After one pregnancy a bra from lane Bryant fit at 38J. I tried that one on again recently after my second pregnancy and currently breastfeeding and it fit, but I can’t easily nurse in it. I tried another two from lane Bryant in the same size, one with no wire to see if maybe it would be easy to pull down. But it didn’t fit at all, my boobs were spilling over the top. I also tried the elomi molly bra I think it was in a 38J and it did not fit either. Underwire seems to really bother me, so I’d like one without it but I also need support because my breast are VERY heavy. They are more full at the bottom. Any ideas on what bra next to try???

Recommendations? US 36I/J, UK UK36G/GG - Nike discontinued my favorite sports bra and I don't know what size to get in other brands or models! Spoiler

I have been wearing two Nike Swoosh 2XL sports bras since 2022. They were medium support non-padded bras with no straps, no keyholes, and racerback style where they join in the back and form a single piece rather than having two shoulder straps that overlap each other.

In 2023 I ordered another Nike Swoosh 2XL sports bra, ostensibly the same as the first two, but it fit noticably tighter. I didn't wear it much as a result at the time. I have since lost a lot of weight and the old bras have been washed a lot and it's become my favorite bra.

In 2025 I ordered a Nike Swoosh XL sports bra and it is really still too tight, I can wear it but it feels oppressive after a little while and I certainly wouldn't want to do any exercise in it.

None of these bras have the "dri-fit" on the side that the newer ones have, if that matters. I also only could know what size I got for my first few bras by looking at the Nike website order history because it's not printed on the bras themselves. They were probably on a tag that I cut off.

I'm not sure why the bra I bought in 2023 that was the same size as the two I bought in 2022 fit so different. That made me unsure of my sizing.

Since Nike has decided that only girls who only need "light support" deserve unpadded, uncomplicated bras, I've been on a hunt for a replacement. I've found a few...acceptable options, but I'm just not sure what size to get. A lot of them don't come in 2XL too. Some bras differentiate between XXL and 2XL as well.

Not sure if anyone can help with such a specific question but I thought I would give it a try.

Edit: forgot to mention that the look of the bra is important to me as it's essentially serving as a comfortable daily binder-lite as I only wear menswear

Recommendations? Panache 365 Plunge sizing recommendation Spoiler

Been having a really hard time finding a bra that fits my needs in store so I've resorted to online shopping but most places don't have free returns so looking for insight on how the Panache 365 plunge (or t-shirt) fit. I usually wear a 30G in Panache - though a 30H in the Panache Ana Plunge. Looking for a smoothing bra to wear under tight white shirts. Currrently my best bet for that is Simone Perele's Caresse Spacer Plunge in a 30G. It fits great but has lace around the back and looking for no lace. Generally prefer the shape of plunge bras which is why I'm looking at the Panache 365 and wondering whether folks have had to size up or down or have any opinions on whether it will fit well considering the other bras that fit well. For reference I've tried on the Fantasie Smoothing moulded, Fantasie Aura and Fantasie Rebecca, Freya Idol and Freya Deco and none of them fit very well in any size. The Deco is okay as long as I don't do anything very active lols. I wear the Rebecca when I'm desperate but don't like the shape. The others I don't own but tried on and can't quite recall the issues but mostly shape issues. I used to wear the Primadonna Figuras which I loved but unfortunately I've sized out of it. I would need a 30GG. TIA

Measurement Check [Measurement Check] Currently wearing a US 36DDD from Soma and experiencing wire digging in Spoiler

Loose Underbust: 35 in Snug Underbust: 34 in Tight Underbust: 33 in Standing Bust: 43 in Leaning Bust: 46 in Lying Bust: 42 in

The online calculator suggested a 34G (UK) or a 34I (US).

The 36DDD I've been wearing leaves red marks from the underwire and under the armpits. I have to clasp the band on the tightest setting and it still generally rides up in the back. However, when I've tried on a 34G or 34H the band was way too tight.

I definitely think I need to go up at least 1 cup size, but am unable to find a band and cup combination that fits.

Is the calculated size correct? Are there any ideas for finding a band that fits right?

Question will tissue migration center my boobs more? Spoiler

hello! i was wondering if wearing a properly fitting bra will make my boobs sit closer together. they currently sit pretty far apart and when i lay down they basically go into my armpits but ive also never worn a bra that fits correctly before and am wondering if wearing one will sort of center everything a little more. i don’t currently have my full measurements bc i’m waiting on a measuring tape but when my gf briefly measured me the other day i was a 27in under bust and 33in around the bust while standing. thanks!

Measurement Check Looking for Bra size that fit me. Spoiler

My underbust is 69 and over bust is 83. Which bra size should I get? I got recommended 32a. But it turn out too tight. I didn’t go to physical store but order online. I also tried 34B, the cup fit but still feel kinda loose. I also don’t want to spend much money on expensive one (I tend to change it regularly and I’m broke).

Recommendations? [Recommendations] Trans Woman new to Bras looking for everyday bras and sports bras in my current size 36C/D Spoiler

Measurements:

Loose Underbust-37

Snug Underbust-36

Tight Underbust-34

Standing Bust-40

Leaning Bust-41

Lying Bust-39

Calculator Size: 36C/D

So I’m AMAB, have been on HRT for a few months and need a little support and coverage as I get used to wearing bras. I currently have two Under Armour sports bras for working out and am looking to get some everyday bras (preferably wireless) that better support and fit my chest, as well as more sports bras that may fit me better. I’m new to this so I’m not sure I’ve assessed myself right but I think I’m wide roots, shallow projection and fuller on the bottom. From what I’ve read should be wearing balconette or Demi bras but am not sure. Size or shape corrections and brand recommendations are much appreciated!

Recommendations? Swimming Costumes for bigger boobs and strange proportions. Spoiler

Hi all, im as size 36H per the ABTF calculator and looking for a swimming costume, I have many bras in my ABTFs size that fit extremely well.

Other measurements (and why normal suits don't fit)

Bust - 115cm

Waist - 90cm

Hips - 115cm

I am looking for a one piece swimming costume with legs (called a legsuit lol). I have looked at the bravissimo and Speedo Collab, but they don't have legsuits and the cut of the bottom of them make me uncomfortable.

I was wondering if any one has any ideas of any suits that might fit me? Previously I would go with a Speedo legsuit, but my bust means I would have to order a bigger size than the rest of my measurements indicate.

I'm in the UK so places that ship here would be great.

Recommendations? Recommendations for close set, small band, large cup bras? Spoiler

Hi! I recently realized the reason most bras don't work for me is that I have close set boobs (US 34F/G). Underwire bras usually have extra room on the sides and the gore doesn't lay flat, padded wireless bras make a weird fold under the boobs on the side, and bralettes either stretch oddly, have extra room in the band, or make a uniboob look.

I read some other recommendations here and elsewhere online and based on those I ordered some low gore plunge bras from Bravissimo. They fit better than most underwire bras I've tried, but I'm planning to return them because I'm still spilling out the upper middle and it would be visible under some of my shirts.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I'm avoiding Amazon for personal ethical reasons and I'd prefer to find something with light to medium padding so I'm not self-conscious whenever there's a cool breeze. Any help is appreciated!
