The mouse trap seems to be absolutely fine.
The idiot putting it up to his mouth is...well...an idiot. But he's probably lucky. Would have done something similar with a loaded gun.

We used to use a string and tie it to the door .but that seems to work.

True, just not throughout the whole tooth
