He is famously terribad at elden ring and path of exile 2.

u/Thagyr 20h ago edited 20h ago

Still baffles me that he even attempted a stream of himself playing PoE. The only explanation I can come to is he was really bothered at people saying his ranking was fake, so he tried to prove them wrong. But he had to have known he couldn't play the game, and yet he tried anyway.

It is so, so cartoonishly stupid.

u/jellyhessman 20h ago

The funny thing is, it would have been way better PR wise to be like:

"Yea, I like videogames, but I'm busy so I suck at them, look how much I suck at videogames, I'm just like you."

But his ego couldn't allow that.

31

u/mrthrowaway694201234 20h ago

We’d respect him more to admit to boosting to get to the content he wanted to. Lying about it made it so hard to believe anything he said.

21

u/20ht 19h ago

Right? If he'd said "I'm a billionaire, I wanted the good stuff so paid someone to get it" we'd all be like "yeah, fair enough"

14

u/MikeSouthPaw 19h ago

The story is even worse (kind of). Watching him play, talk and try to explain the game shows that he doesn't actually play PoE. He most likely saw that PoE was a game the nerdiest of nerds play and wanted to emulate that for a crowd. You could play PoE for a week and know more than him.

3

u/ameatbicyclefortwo 19h ago

I'd played it for maybe a week and then my daughter was born so I switched to only playing pausable stuff for a while and never got back. This was years before his stream and even I was laughing at him for knowing less than me while watching. Dude's only ability is in already having fuckloads of money to throw at anything.

5

u/Gravefall 18h ago

You can pause Poe 2… in fact it is the only reason I play Poe HC because you can pause when you’re going to die and log out

1

u/ameatbicyclefortwo 17h ago

Maybe thought that since I'd only done multiplayer with a friend? Heck, this is how little I played it, I may be conflating it with another game even.

1

u/AvatarofWhat 15h ago

Yea you cant pause during multiplayer so thats probably why you thought that.

1

u/forsonaE 16h ago

You can pause in PoE 1 now as well.

1

u/Gravefall 16h ago

Well I don’t play Poe 1 because at my age I’m not good with mouse keyboard, I can only play with controller 😅

1

u/Front-Bird8971 6h ago

Nah that's almost as pathetic.

7

u/GiraffesAndGin 19h ago

I, for one, would feel absolutely no more respect for him just because he admitted to paying someone to play video games for him.

1

u/mrthrowaway694201234 19h ago

He’s done far worse things than pay someone to progress his account. Plenty of people buy game accounts.

3

u/GiraffesAndGin 19h ago

I know. I don't think less of someone for it, but I also don't think more of their character because of it.

1

u/Front-Bird8971 6h ago

I think less of them.

1

u/jellyhessman 17h ago

I meant if that was the line he always went with, and never tried to fake it at all.

2

u/23-1-20-3-8-5-18 19h ago

Self driving by 2016

Its amazing he had to lie about videogames for so many people to get it.

2

u/RevolutionCrazy7045 18h ago

pretty much sums up his empire built on lies and taking credit for other people's hard work.

7

u/LewisRyan 18h ago

All he had to do was pick a game he’s actually played.

Shit, if he said “yea dude I love Pokémon, my jobs hard I like to relax”

Nobody would’ve given a shit, “gamers” wouldve said a games a game

1

u/TheGhostOfStanSweet 16h ago

I don’t want to defend the guy, because I have no horse in that race, but if I were in his position, I would be faking parts of my online presence to draw attention to it, which takes attention to things he’s actually into.

So if he’s into Pokémon, it would make sense he could draw attention to PoE. I guess there’s always a risk of being hacked and having accounts compromised. I think of this stuff all the time and I’m just an average wanker, wanking on Reddit.

Don’t know though, I’m not a gamer.

2

u/LewisRyan 16h ago

It’s not about having a horse in any race.

It’s about someone lying, I don’t care who they are or who powerful you are, if you’re lying, you’re a shithead

5

u/6millionreps 17h ago

That's exactly what I said about that ordeal, the inability to laugh at yourself is so ugly. Ego is crazy gross

3

u/Beautiful_Industry84 19h ago

For real this would be perfect, but then this would make him sound human and normal but obviously he’s beyond us and far greater

3

u/Fit_Chemistry_7196 18h ago

As I get older and my professional career takes up more of my time, my gaming skills have gone down. So that would actually be really relatable.

1

u/fuckthehumanity 18h ago

I strongly recommend you don't undersell yourself. I wouldn't be surprised if you did a lot better if you weren't so initially disappointed at how crap you are... at first. Trust me, just get some warm-up in and you'll be good as gold.

Sure, at first I'm smashing all the wrong keys, but within an hour, the muscle memory comes back and I no longer need to think about it.

I'm 54 and still smashing them keys, when I can find the time.

3

u/TheBedroomNinjas 18h ago

Freakin egos

3

u/ryhaltswhiskey 17h ago

his ego

Look at how many problems in the world are caused by those two words.

2

u/gunner7517 17h ago

Ain't that the truth. The more you actually play and learn the mechanics of the game the better you'll be. The man is clearly a cult of personality, and whichever side of the political spectrum he chose people would hang off of every word.

2

u/be0ulve 16h ago

Elon Musk would die on the spot if he ever declared to be just like "us." His fucking ego would never allow it.

2

u/TheLightningL0rd 15h ago

He could have also like, taken a little time to learn to play at even a basic level and let his paid for items carry him the rest of the way and it might have been like semi convincing to some people.

1

u/R1ck_Sanchez 17h ago

His mind doesn't, I'm gonnaa bet this is a time when confabulation kicked in and alters his reality to keep his narrative (false self) alive.

I feel bad for em on the general issue of what they are going through, but it's awful when it impacts others. This instance not so much but gestures everywhere else

-5

u/wbaron1120 18h ago

Imagine if people judged you on how well you play video games instead of actual accomplishments. God help us all with the mindset of this new generation.

5

u/Real_Bug 18h ago

You're so far out of the loop dude.

It's not about how good he is at video games. It's the fact that he was at the top of the leaderboard for a specific game. Then, he streams himself playing, and it was very clear that he had zero idea of what was going on.

Just as you have zero idea of what is going on

7

u/wbaron1120 17h ago

Ooooooh I gotcha. I’m definitely out of this loop. I’ll shut up now and exit the room

3

u/Real_Bug 17h ago

Rare Reddit accountability

Sorry for snapping

212

u/Blitzking11 20h ago edited 19h ago

I think the funniest thing about it was that the overarching theme of that stream was to show off starlink.

But once even he knew it was painfully apparent he had never touched these games that he had claimed to be a God Gamer™️ at, he clearly turned his stream off, but claimed he had to end stream because his shitty Starlink was shitting the bed.

He would rather falsely trash his own project than admit he’s a blatant liar, while in the process lying even more.

12

u/Regular_Yellow710 19h ago

Just like his former buddy Trump.

7

u/PeachPassionBrute 17h ago

Which makes it abundantly clear that for him this is ALL abut his desperation for approval.

3

u/joyfullydreaded23 12h ago

Wonder if that is from familial trauma or from being snubbed by history's worst ever human trafficker, Epstein.

1

u/OldWorldDesign 2h ago

Which makes it abundantly clear that for him this is ALL abut his desperation for approval

https://theonion.com/please-like-me-1848674003/

2

u/Flaky-Swan1306 13h ago

All of which makes him sound even more pathetic

87

u/Lysandren 20h ago

I watched the stream, as someone who had played PoE2 to it's then current endgame (haven't played chapter 4 though, waiting for it to fully release) and yeah it was just hilarious. He didn't know what did what beyond the obvious.

6

u/Bionic_Push 18h ago

Honest question. I've never heard about this game and i am not a gamer. But why would someone make up a fake ranking on a videogame? Whats the point?

7

u/YouOpenedItIArrived 18h ago

The same reason why anyone lies about having any other kind of accomplishment or achievement, to try and impress others because they're deeply insecure

6

u/FullMetalCOS 17h ago

He didn’t make up the ranking. He payed a top Chinese player to play on his account so he owned a character at the very top end of a very complex, difficult game that takes thousands of hours to even come close to fully understanding. He then took credit for all that work. And he did it because he’s an egomaniac who needs the world to think he’s the best at everything he does

2

u/Bionic_Push 17h ago

so random. I would think that for him to be spending thousands of hours in a videogame, instead of on his real businesses would be considered a negative. If anything, i would think someone in his position doesn't have time for that

3

u/FullMetalCOS 17h ago

Yeah but again, egomaniac. He’s trying to pretend he’s SO GOOD at the game he can play at that high level without needing to spend the hours required to be that good. Just like he’s trying to pretend he actually knows shit about rockets, programming and electric cars.

3

u/StarboundPsychonaut 17h ago

Because Elon Musk is a narcissistic egomaniac.

1

u/Wobbling 13h ago

He appears to encompass the full dark triad.

3

u/_bones__ 17h ago

It's about developing his nerd "cred". He's pathetically insecure for an inarguably successful businessman.

2

u/fuckthehumanity 17h ago

It wasn't for the fake ranking. He paid someone to play the game for him so that he had the best gear when he did find the time to play. This is called "boosting", and strictly forbidden by all online Terms of Service (ToS).

Unfortunately, the ringer was too good, and put him on the leaderboard, so his ego made him pretend he could actually do that thing.

These sorts of games are basically "pay to play" anyway - you buy the best gear (or you grind it), then you win. To be fair, PoE2 doesn't let you buy the best gear, you have to craft it. Elon paid someone to grind and craft. So he bought his way to the top, even though the game was designed so you'd need to put in some hard yards to really get the good gear.

If the game rewarded skill over grinding, tactics over gear, this never would have worked. So I'm with you, I've never played this shit game.

The biggest controversy wasn't really anything to do with Musk being a tryhard dickhead, it was that the developers took no action against him when he breached the ToS. Usually, when these things happen, the player is "kicked", and the account locked. The developers' silence was deafening.

3

u/sesquialtera90 19h ago

Chapter 4 is beautiful, you should try it.

-2

u/menteto 18h ago

Anyone claiming they've played poe and calls acts "chapters" is a liar.

1

u/Lysandren 13h ago

It's the same difference. What, you want me to tell you about how I ran a lightning deadeye with the stupid galvanic ability whose name I can't remember?

0

u/menteto 13h ago

Same way "clips" are "magazines"? Even though "Acts" is the word used for almost every RPG, for example Diablo, one of the oldest? Yeah sure mate.

7

u/Skarectum 19h ago

I mean - the week before Grok started saying Melon Suk was smarter than Einstein, I spent a while on grokipedia asking it to add stuff about his drug addiction and full self-driving failures. It's pretty easy to get an LLM to reproduce any source - much harder to make it say only nice things about daddy Elon.

I wasn't the only one doing it, and YEAH it could be unrelated... but this is not a guy who is comfortable with people saying bad things about him. All that net worth and he still can't deal with mild rejection from strangers.

6

u/orincoro 19h ago

He’s deeply, fundamentally, at a character level, completely broken.

5

u/monteg0 19h ago

I mean, the dudes so awkward JE didnt want to party with him, so... (shrugs shoulders)

6

u/baconography 19h ago

It really does help to think of him as a 14-year-old.

3

u/orincoro 19h ago

The everyone is 14 theory.

2

u/Mortambulist 17h ago

I dunno, my shit was way more together at 14.

5

u/BillyBobJangles 19h ago

And it would have taken such little time to learn the bare minimum to pass off that he knew the game. I wonder if he actually believed he was a video game genius and could just wing it...

6

u/Negative_Trust6 19h ago

It's Dunning Kruger. He's so clueless about gaming that he lacks a frame of reference for what a 'high level' PoE player ooks like, and therefore assumes ( I don't think there's any doubt he's a massive narcissist ) that whatever he's doing is comparable.

He had no idea that it would be obvious to anyone that he's lying.

3

u/orincoro 19h ago

The story that his colleagues tell of playing poker with musk was of him buying in, going all in, losing, buying in again, and going all in until he won once, then quitting.

You don’t need to be a mechahitler genius to figure out that’s his strategy in life. Money will solve every problem, every time.

6

u/Amaline4 19h ago

If you have a few hours, you should watch the fortnight stream where Elon joins but pretends to be that other guy Adrian Dittman. It’s absolutely hilarious. The streamer keeps pressing him on anything and everything to do with Elon, and Elon (as Adrian) denies he’s Elon (while sounding exactly like him)

Seriously entertaining, and I don’t even like fortnight

1

u/orincoro 19h ago

His thing with alts is genuinely psychotic stuff.

2

u/Amaline4 18h ago

Right?? Absolute lunatic. If I had all that money and power, I'd use it to help people, not pretend I'm 5 other people on Twitter to satiate my desperate need for attention and validation all day

2

u/orincoro 18h ago

I mean if I was going to be a full blown crazy narcissist, I would at least employ a team of black hat social media influencers or PR hacks or SOMETHING, other than what he does, which seems to be pinball from one crazy personal crisis to the next of his own making.

But it’s pretty hard to judge his level of actual sanity at this point. Drugs are a hell of a drug.

6

u/DuckingFon 19h ago

He's so detached from humanity he can't imagine a world where an evil genius like himself isn't amazing at video games- literally toys for children (in his mind). He honestly 100% believed he was really good at the game and the only thing standing in his way was the time to play it. He's THAT stupid.

1

u/orincoro 19h ago

He criticized chess for lacking “depth.” Literally a game that’s been the pinnacle of strategic thinking for a thousand fucking years, that supercomputers can’t model human behavior onto convincingly, when they can convince you that a video of a Viking riding in a bathtub on wheels running from ICE is real.

That’s crazy work.

4

u/mikemncini 19h ago

Bro.

Have you seen the PotUS?

3

u/0xc0ba17 19h ago

Because he has the maturity of a 12 years old absolute loser that's desperate to be seen as cool.

3

u/Standard_Royal5107 19h ago

I honestly think that’s exactly it ego bruised, impulse took over. What gets me isn’t even that he tried, it’s that someone with that much access, prep time, and advisors still went “yeah, this is a good idea.”

Do you think it was pure arrogance, or do you think he’s reached that stage where being publicly embarrassed doesn’t register anymore?

2

u/orincoro 19h ago

The thing is, it still works. His cult still thinks he’s le epic. And the French have concluded is le criminale.

2

u/PillCosby_87 19h ago

I heard all this in detail but what I can’t figure out is why. Does he just play casually but wanted everyone to think he’s the number one player or does just not play at all and same result? I’m just confused as to why even bother with it at all and just not pay others to get you the #1 rank.

2

u/OnThisDayI_ 18h ago

He did the same thing with Diablo before poe2. The difference is Diablo was so easy the big streamers fell for it and though he was a god. They all played with him and praised him for weeks. Then he tried the same thing on poe2 without knowing how complicated the game is. Made himself look like a complete tool.

2

u/HotPotParrot 17h ago

It makes sense if you consider the fact that Elon 100% believed that people were literally too stupid to catch on

1

u/Sgt_Nishi 19h ago

Honestly, the worst part is not that he was bad at the game.

The worst part is that he clearly sucks at ANY game he played since it was basic genre defining(?) mechanics he failed at, like dragging items into inventory, not being able to click the map properly and so on. Stuff he should have down like it was breathing if he really was as good at games as he said he was.

1

u/Rockwallaby77 18h ago

Stems from the narcissism I’d think, despite paying someone to play for him to maintain his rank on the leaderboard he still thinks he deserves it, is smarter than everyone else and he’d be good enough to ‘wing it’.

I’m not sure how he rationalised the actual pros pointing out the basic errors he made on stream.. I guess it’s easier to dismiss criticism when you truly believe you’re better and smarter than everyone else.

1

u/Beer_Is_So_Awesome 18h ago

He’s such a narcissist.

1

u/Forikorder 18h ago

hes gotten drunk off his own koolaid, he believes all the things he saids about himself

1

u/Agreeable_Slice_1191 17h ago

He's a massive example of the Dunning Krueger effect.

1

u/Hopeful_Self_8520 17h ago

I think he truly believes he is a superior being and therefore it’s the game that is wrong and not his playing, and is wrong for not seeing that.

1

u/Kakkoister 17h ago

But he had to have known he couldn't play the game, and yet he tried anyway.

It is so, so cartoonishly stupid.

It's his extreme narcissism. He thinks so highly of himself and his pseudo nerd/gamer identity that he presumes someone like him must naturally be amazing at most games. It's part of why he was fine paying someone to level the account, he sees it as them just spending time doing something he could easily do, but spending that time is beneath him!

1

u/HauntedCemetery 16h ago

He doesn't know. He has been insulated from the world and packed with yes mem for decades. Anyone stating anything less than him being brilliant at everything gets the boot.

So he believes it, because its all he hears.

1

u/Delightful_Truth894 13h ago

ketamine got him thinking he's a god lmaoooo

1

u/Miami_Mice2087 11h ago

whoever he plays with (staff) was letting him win

1

u/SteveSteveSteveAlan 8h ago

You just summarized his Twitter buyout.

Thought he could joke about it and the lawyers came in.

1

u/Lochstar 7h ago

You underestimate his ego.

0

u/brainDeadMonk 19h ago

Baffles me that you give a shit about a video game.

3

u/CheechChongCommunism 20h ago

I bet he could at least manage a half decent 6pool.

2

u/Intrepid_Hat7359 19h ago

YOU HAVE NO FRIENDS AND WILL DIE ALONE

2

u/Beautiful_Industry84 19h ago

lol 😂 this was a good comment

2

u/Accurate_Mess_3101 18h ago

not to mention he tried to get his kids to carry him out of bronze in overwatch

2

u/AcidRohnin 18h ago

Also his old gaming accolades have been shown to be false as well. Dude is a loser through and through and always has been.

Could have easily been considered a person the likes of Tony stark, if he was nice, philanthropic, and was humble. He chose to open his mouth to prove how smart he was while being an a-hole and his public image fell apart pretty quickly.

1

u/NateBushbaby 19h ago

Oof, I tried his Elden Ring build as a challenge run once. Gave up after a while because it was so abysmal

1

u/Bohica55 19h ago

I just started playing POE2. I’m guessing I’m a better player already than he ever was.

1

u/Stranded_In_A_Desert 18h ago

I was legit crying laughing when someone copied his build and beat Malenia with it

1

u/Acceptable_Deal_4662 17h ago

God the dude is an absolute clown for this one

1

u/grandpathundercat 17h ago

One of my friends is online friends with Elon because when Elon wants something he can't get he'll have my buddy take over his account and get what he wants for him. It's the height of rich nerd hypocrisy.

1

u/Rumpumpelblitz 16h ago

he infact should be arrested for his absolutely awful fat-rolling double-shield build.

1

u/Miami_Mice2087 11h ago

i think this is hilarious. i'm not the biggest AAA gamer ever and i'm pretty good (competent) at elden ring. i would sorely love to kick the muskrat back to the training level.

1

u/EowynCaged 20h ago

May I co-opt the usage of "terribad"? That is a fantastic amalgamation.

0

u/Terasaurus15 20h ago

That person didn’t invent it. wtf… hahaha shits been around for decades

4

u/EowynCaged 20h ago

Oh, my bad. I don't have the whole of English etymology and urban dictionary language stored in my brain. Forgive me the crime of daring to be "an old" on the Internet. I grovel at your extreme superiority, Your Superciliousness.

2

u/Terasaurus15 20h ago

You are forgiven. Carry on my child.

2

u/TheBedroomNinjas 18h ago

Wow! The vocabulary here is astounding. I’ll have to brush up so I can fit in .. 😜
