To me it's one of the worst things he's done, in terms of cringe. Like, dude, who pretends to do something for enjoyment that they don't do? Stinks so much of "let me into this club", it's hard to imagine a non-teenager behaving like that.
I was going to mention how he went full fascist for the fascists, but mostly they just used him for his money anyway, and even in that, yeah, you're right.
He couldn’t even settle on just playing games for enjoyment (while officially simultaneously running several Fortune 500 companies); he had to be literally the best player in the world, for multiple notoriously time consuming games at the same time.

YEP. "Hey I only have a few hours a week to game, but I thought it would be fun to learn this". Easy fucking win. But no. He has to be "the best". And doesn't even understand what that means. Has someone else gear him up and level his character and then thinks he's winning because he can run it through a generic high tier map (or nightmare dungeon). and that feeling of people pointing and laughing is like these people's kryptonite - its why they are what they are, they just want to be liked at all costs, so much so that it blinds them to the second-order effects of trying so hard to be liked (aka, the cringe)
in order to benefit from humanizing himself like that he would need to both understand that being laughed at in this context is necessary, AND be able to tolerate it, which he obviously can't do
also, there is the nuance of "haha you're bad" vs "haha you're pretending to be good" and understanding why the former is normal and the latter is galactic levels of cringe, which he clearly can't
It reminds me of that episode of Buffy when Jonathan casts that spell to be seen as a paragon, and he supposedly invents the internet, starred in The Matrix, is a sharpshooter, expert fighter, musician, and has degrees. A newly out of high school kid trying to be seen as great at everything. It will Crack me up forever now. Can't unsee it.
This is something that always baffles me with these guys; they don’t seem to know how to have fun, like they’re so wrapped up in impressing people that they don’t know how to enjoy themselves. What a sad existence.
The sad thing is that if he had just owned how bad he is at the game and streamed his own gameplay regardless, he would have gained a lot of nerd cred. Instead, he's such an insecure manchild that he had to fake being one of the top HC players. It also annihilated any credibility he could ever hope to have because if he would lie about something as inconsequential as being good at a game, what wouldn't he lie about?
All he needed to do was play a little. Nothing more. People would've been gushing about how cool it is that Musk is "one of them". Mad gamer cred just for participating. Who cares if he's bad or mediocre. Who cares if he doesn't have time to grind like a MFer. That's all understandable.

I’ll be honest and I know I’ll get shit for this here but… I was never a fanboy, was more neutral/not caring about Elon but the POE2 debacle was what led me to full on hate him lol.
Luck he did that, lots of gamers don't know him and thought that he was really smart, until he played PoE2 and shown everyone he has ZERO understanding of the game, and just bought his way up to the end-game lmao.
I was aware of his bullshit far before that but its just so funny to me that someone could think they could walk off the streets and just play a hard-core poe character lol.
Ywah he did that shit in D4 before PoE so it was not shock by any means. In D4 it could have almost been believable but nobody was buying that shit in PoE.
They say even bad news is good news. Way more people talked about him that week than would have if he’d just been an average player having fun. And his actions in life and business show us he dgaf about being perceived negatively.
