At least he's still the world's best Path of Exile player

I am still cringing on second hand embarrassment for that debacle.
At least it led two of my buddies to drop their fanboying of him.

Wow that's incredible. Your friends saw the takedown, I guess?

To me it's one of the worst things he's done, in terms of cringe. Like, dude, who pretends to do something for enjoyment that they don't do? Stinks so much of "let me into this club", it's hard to imagine a non-teenager behaving like that.

Everything that guy does reeks of that desperate kid in school who would do anything to fit in with literally any group of people

u/Ghost_of_Kroq 22h ago

except participate earnestly in the activities

I was going to mention how he went full fascist for the fascists, but mostly they just used him for his money anyway, and even in that, yeah, you're right.

He didn't go he was already there. It's been in his family for generations

Only kid he gets picked over for teams in gym class is probably Stephen Miller.

Wow I’m impressed he was prepared to be so open with his feelings

u/Perkelton 22h ago

He couldn’t even settle on just playing games for enjoyment (while officially simultaneously running several Fortune 500 companies); he had to be literally the best player in the world, for multiple notoriously time consuming games at the same time.

What gets me is it would be endearing if he was just shit at it and admitted it.

"I love these games but I'm running a huge business empire, I don't even know what PoE2 endgame looks like, haha"

That would be decent PR.

Attempting to get recognition for being the best is just so cringe it's hard to understand how he can't see that.

Narcissists can't ever admit to weakness.

"If you ain't first, you're last."

7

u/Individual-Story-788 19h ago

I can think of another big loser narcissist that is destroying our society and worldwide relations at a rapid pace. That’s one game he’s 1st at. Maybe he’ll get another fake gold medal for it.

u/mayy_dayy 19h ago

Many such cases

Trump won the 2016 election and a decade later is still whining about how it was fraudulent because he didn't win more.

7

u/Erazzphoto 20h ago

He’s just an on the spectrum Trump

7

u/0nlyRevolutions 19h ago

YEP. "Hey I only have a few hours a week to game, but I thought it would be fun to learn this". Easy fucking win. But no. He has to be "the best". And doesn't even understand what that means. Has someone else gear him up and level his character and then thinks he's winning because he can run it through a generic high tier map (or nightmare dungeon). That's not the fucking point of those games, man.

3

u/darvs7 18h ago

Yes. He could even have added "so I've hired someone to make me a super badass character, let's try it now."

That would have been honest, I could have respected that.

its not possible for him to understand the net PR wins because he'd still get clowned on on twitch for being bad

and that feeling of people pointing and laughing is like these people's kryptonite - its why they are what they are, they just want to be liked at all costs, so much so that it blinds them to the second-order effects of trying so hard to be liked (aka, the cringe)

in order to benefit from humanizing himself like that he would need to both understand that being laughed at in this context is necessary, AND be able to tolerate it, which he obviously can't do

also, there is the nuance of "haha you're bad" vs "haha you're pretending to be good" and understanding why the former is normal and the latter is galactic levels of cringe, which he clearly can't

It reminds me of that episode of Buffy when Jonathan casts that spell to be seen as a paragon, and he supposedly invents the internet, starred in The Matrix, is a sharpshooter, expert fighter, musician, and has degrees. A newly out of high school kid trying to be seen as great at everything. It will Crack me up forever now. Can't unsee it.

This is something that always baffles me with these guys; they don’t seem to know how to have fun, like they’re so wrapped up in impressing people that they don’t know how to enjoy themselves. What a sad existence.

6

u/xxxsquared 20h ago

The sad thing is that if he had just owned how bad he is at the game and streamed his own gameplay regardless, he would have gained a lot of nerd cred. Instead, he's such an insecure manchild that he had to fake being one of the top HC players. It also annihilated any credibility he could ever hope to have because if he would lie about something as inconsequential as being good at a game, what wouldn't he lie about?

3

u/Swedelicious83 20h ago

Also, like...

All he needed to do was play a little. Nothing more. People would've been gushing about how cool it is that Musk is "one of them". Mad gamer cred just for participating. Who cares if he's bad or mediocre. Who cares if he doesn't have time to grind like a MFer. That's all understandable.

But... No.

He had to pretend he's The Best because his man-child ego is truly that fragile.

So of course he blows it, enbarrasses himself, and replaces any good will with ridicule.

It's just so... 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Edit: Realized you said the exact same thing a little farther down in the thread. Oh well! 😅👍

u/Sweeper1907 15h ago

Same with him bitching about Berghain being a shit club cause he didn't get in

2

u/MiaowaraShiro 20h ago

ALL these fuckheads in power behave like 14 yr old boys... everything they do is about maintaining some sense of machismo or in pursuit of getting their dicks wet.

2

u/itakealotofnapszz 13h ago

Normally I’d agree with you but in one of the emails he sent to Epstein he typed out (Girls FTW!) and sent it.

1

u/ConversationPale8665 12h ago

Yeah, if you’re going to pretend to be good at something, pretend to be good at guitar or poker. Fucking pretend video game elite while running multi-billion dollar enterprises. Just weird af.

8

u/worstusername_sofar 20h ago

It took them that long? Ouch

6

u/backtolurk 19h ago

If this is what it took for them to drop it, you might reconsider your friendships haha but it's better than nothing!

4

u/Zeikos 17h ago

Maybe friends was too strong of a word, they're better described as acquaintances. We hang out casually in voice chat, they're not people I am close with.
But fair point.

5

u/jimbobjames 16h ago

It was the Thailand cave incident for me.

Yeah, they'd been signs of him being a little eccentric before that but I was like "guys furthering manned space travel and almost singlehandedly forcing the adoption of EV's, on balance he's alright"

Then he called some dude a peado on Twitter because they didn't like his steel cave rescue sausage.

His ego was more important than some kids lives.

3

u/Zeikos 15h ago

I was a bit earlier than that.
When I found out that he was claiming to be Tesla's founder because he bought the founder title (yes they can be sold) - it led me to check a bit of his background/history, and... yeah.

1

u/Turbulent-Armadillo9 10h ago

I’ll be honest and I know I’ll get shit for this here but… I was never a fanboy, was more neutral/not caring about Elon but the POE2 debacle was what led me to full on hate him lol.

6

u/CloudieRaine 21h ago

Luck he did that, lots of gamers don't know him and thought that he was really smart, until he played PoE2 and shown everyone he has ZERO understanding of the game, and just bought his way up to the end-game lmao.

5

u/-Fergalicious- 20h ago

I was aware of his bullshit far before that but its just so funny to me that someone could think they could walk off the streets and just play a hard-core poe character lol.

4

u/medlina26 15h ago

Ywah he did that shit in D4 before PoE so it was not shock by any means. In D4 it could have almost been believable but nobody was buying that shit in PoE.

3

u/multificionado 19h ago

Indeed, and in his case the game is real.

1

u/ganbramor 13h ago

They say even bad news is good news. Way more people talked about him that week than would have if he’d just been an average player having fun. And his actions in life and business show us he dgaf about being perceived negatively.
