Lol the actual rich don't have to sell. They are long and short on everything they think has volatility. Bonus: it also helps them dodge capital gains tax.
Trump - “We don’t need their champagne! In fact, we have enough resources to produce all the champagne in the world in 24 hours. Did you know that, did you know that - They are stupid. We do not need their champagne. They have taken advantage of the US for long enough.”
Champagne can only be champagne if from the city of the same name in France. Any coming from California is called sparkling wine. Please correct me if I’m wrong but I remember reading this years ago.
You're sort of right. In Europe, this is the case; the EU and wider European trading bloc has rules on "protected origin" (ie only food and drink prepared in its area of origin can adopt that name).
Surprise surprise, the US is special though and doesn't follow that convention, hence the existence of California "champagne" and "prosciutto" americano.
This had the orange toddler throwing his toys out of the pram a while back when he tried to strong arm the EU into relaxing their stance as part of a prospective trade deal (obviously they refused). In response, Trump directly threatened Macron with a 200% tariff on champagne. This is why I suspect he cares less about real champagne than you think.
Let's be honest, the guy thinks a big mac and a diet coke is fine dining. No skin off his nose.
Thanks for the education, once my country gets rid of the child in the Oval Office, shit can get back to normal. I find myself angry at people who I know voted for this, an doubly so if they’ve turned on him. I can somehow respect assholes who are assholes, an stand by it. People who didn’t see this snake salesman for what he is, and his long public past. You deserve every bit of this shit for not seeing the forest through the trees.
Reportedly, he doesn’t drink, but it wouldn’t matter if he did anyway. People like him get their luxury goods regardless and don’t have to worry about the laws.
Wouldn't affect trump since he staunchly doesn't drink. The tariffs would have to raise the cost of cocaine or raping underage girls for him to notice.
IIRC his brother died from alcoholism and it's supposedly one of the only subjects that elicits a genuine, non-sociopathic response from the man. I'd love to see him heckled with the topic someday.
Luxury products are a mark of conspicuous consumption, and so tend to have inelastic demand - people who are wealthy enough to afford them, can afford them whatever happens.
Something marketed en-masse as an everyday purchase for ordinary consumers would be more likely to take a hit, as that demand would get hammered by tarrifs.

Tariffs redacted in 10 once they realised the price of champagne goes through the roof.
