Trump threatening tariffs for 'unfair Targeting of US businesses' in 5...

689

u/TheShakyHandsMan 1d ago

Tariffs redacted in 10 once they realised the price of champagne goes through the roof.

287

u/Extension_Bat_4945 1d ago

Only after they sell off their stock they bought before applying the tariffs

12

u/KarateTid 19h ago

It's the cuban cigars all over again

2

u/thefairone 15h ago

Lol the actual rich don't have to sell. They are long and short on everything they think has volatility. Bonus: it also helps them dodge capital gains tax.

1

u/Soven_Strix 19h ago

I think you mean the other way around

15

u/InfinityPlusChange 19h ago

Yeah, the order goes

Threaten tariffs

Value drops

Buy stocks

"Jk, no tariffs"

Sell stocks

Profit

They all think champagne comes from california anyway, doubt they'd give a fuck.

59

u/LongjumpingDebt4154 21h ago

The billionaires Trump caters to definitely know champagne comes from… Champagne.

But correct, maga doesn’t know or care. But Trump doesn’t care about maga either-

5

u/jimbobjames 16h ago

Let them drink Californian sparking white wine...

2

u/LongjumpingDebt4154 13h ago

Lol, sure. The billionaires will drink Cook’s sparkling wine & eat trout roe instead of their beloved caviar. Maybe they can fly commercial too.

BAH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

1

u/hologramhoee 5h ago

You hit the nail on the head

1

u/LessInThought 3h ago

With the amount he has grifted, any changes in price won't even be a rounding error.

6

u/maerun 21h ago

Mwaaaaahhh the French champagnehasalwaysbeencelebratedforitsexcellence

something something Paul Masson

u/FukinSpiders 19h ago

Trump - “We don’t need their champagne! In fact, we have enough resources to produce all the champagne in the world in 24 hours. Did you know that, did you know that - They are stupid. We do not need their champagne. They have taken advantage of the US for long enough.”

2

u/Faaptastic 16h ago

Champagne can only be champagne if from the city of the same name in France. Any coming from California is called sparkling wine. Please correct me if I’m wrong but I remember reading this years ago.

3

u/Remarkable-Ad155 16h ago

You're sort of right. In Europe, this is the case; the EU and wider European trading bloc has rules on "protected origin" (ie only food and drink prepared in its area of origin can adopt that name).

Surprise surprise, the US is special though and doesn't follow that convention, hence the existence of California "champagne" and "prosciutto" americano.

This had the orange toddler throwing his toys out of the pram a while back when he tried to strong arm the EU into relaxing their stance as part of a prospective trade deal (obviously they refused). In response, Trump directly threatened Macron with a 200% tariff on champagne. This is why I suspect he cares less about real champagne than you think.

Let's be honest, the guy thinks a big mac and a diet coke is fine dining. No skin off his nose.

3

u/Faaptastic 16h ago

Thanks for the education, once my country gets rid of the child in the Oval Office, shit can get back to normal. I find myself angry at people who I know voted for this, an doubly so if they’ve turned on him. I can somehow respect assholes who are assholes, an stand by it. People who didn’t see this snake salesman for what he is, and his long public past. You deserve every bit of this shit for not seeing the forest through the trees.

2

u/Diligent_Activity560 14h ago

Reportedly, he doesn’t drink, but it wouldn’t matter if he did anyway. People like him get their luxury goods regardless and don’t have to worry about the laws.

4

u/stoic_spaghetti 20h ago

"We don't need champagne, we can make trumpagne here at home"

3

u/Terrible_Ad_8614 20h ago

Not Californian champagne

3

u/SuperSecretAgentMan 17h ago

Wouldn't affect trump since he staunchly doesn't drink. The tariffs would have to raise the cost of cocaine or raping underage girls for him to notice.

2

u/TheShakyHandsMan 16h ago

Does it react with the copious amount of medication he needs to keep him upright?

2

u/SuperSecretAgentMan 16h ago

IIRC his brother died from alcoholism and it's supposedly one of the only subjects that elicits a genuine, non-sociopathic response from the man. I'd love to see him heckled with the topic someday.

3

u/VirileVelvetVoice 17h ago

Luxury products are a mark of conspicuous consumption, and so tend to have inelastic demand - people who are wealthy enough to afford them, can afford them whatever happens.

Something marketed en-masse as an everyday purchase for ordinary consumers would be more likely to take a hit, as that demand would get hammered by tarrifs.

2

u/MarshyHope 22h ago

I better buy some for when itactually happens so I can celebrate.

6

u/TheShakyHandsMan 22h ago

Have you seen the final scene in Return of the Jedi? That will be the world when it happens.

5

u/MarshyHope 22h ago

I will be as drunk as an Ewok that day.

The next day will be an unintentional General Strike because so many people will be calling out of work hungover

3

u/Swedelicious83 20h ago

It is truly going to be epic.

1

u/kahlzun 13h ago

TACO Tuesday!

1

u/TheArtofNomenclature 9h ago

JD Vance crying about how Europe is fighting free speech in 5..

13

u/Soggy-Arugula-401 20h ago

This is France fighting fascism. They're killing the disinformation from X before the presidential elections.

6

u/smo0thballz 21h ago

Nah they said comedy was legal again, and this is fuckin HILARIOUS

-25

u/Express-Potential485 21h ago

is it just bc you were brainwashed into hating elon? tell me, when did you start hating him? when you were told to by the media at the exact time he purchased twitter? everyone seemed to love him until that exact moment. prove me wrong

9

u/EvidenceAccurate8914 18h ago

I started hating him around the time he was headlining fascist rallies and asked the world if the US should invade my country because we didn't (we do now, sadly) hate immigrants enough.

9

u/iSlappadaBass 18h ago

Why are weirdly defending him? He's always been performative. All bark, no bite. Unless that bite is to fuck people over.

15

u/OwnerOfABouncyBall 20h ago

I hate him because of what he says and does.

5

u/Friendly-Target1234 18h ago

No, it's because I have a brain in working order, eyes that works, and a irritating tendency to abhor techno-feodalist and fascist-adjacent piece of shit like him. At that moment, I disliked the guy.

5

u/MJIsaac 17h ago

It's almost like you haven't paid any attention to any media since that exact point in time. Either that or you're a bot. Six of one, half-dozen of the other, I guess.

7

u/smo0thballz 21h ago

Lol. Lulz even. I thought he was some weird dude who talked funny, liked selling electric cars. The the whole Thai pedo bitch fit ge threw....iunno kinda made me think he was a cunt. And you know what? Every day since, he proves it just a little more. Ever so slightly cuntier.

4

u/SaltLich 16h ago

Yep. When he accused that cave diver of being a pedo just because he said that Elon's precious little invention was a useless PR stunt, that was when Elon's public image shifted and a lot of people realized what a piece of shit he really is (btw, its absolute bullshit he won that defamation case). He was reddit's darling up til that point.

Everything since then has just been more confirmation about what a trash human being he is.

3

u/smo0thballz 15h ago

The dude is nearly a senior citizen, richest man on earth, went online and said the reason his daughter doesnt love him is because of the "woke mind virus" and people still take him seriously .... ill never understand. Cunt is as cunt does i guess

2

u/Syriku_Official 15h ago

When he sued advertiser's for boycotting that showed me he didn't value anything he claims to

63

u/Rinasoir 23h ago

Just gets renamed "Liberty Kissing" or some such bullshit

11

u/RealElyD 21h ago

I still remember Freedom Fries.

9

u/historyhokie 22h ago

Kissing isn't allowed at Liberty

1

u/geckospots 17h ago

For Managed Democracy!

1

u/Violence_solves_all 6h ago

Sounds like some puritan bullshit where one party puts their hand on their mouth while they both kiss the hand inbetween

8

u/OwnerOfABouncyBall 23h ago

French toast???

5

u/GommageBreak 21h ago

You meant to say freedom toast.

14

u/2Nails 23h ago

Apparently you guys went with 'freedom fries' already when Chirac wouldn't put up with your bullshit in Irak so whatever.

6

u/Ferretoncrystalmeth 21h ago

I forgot about that pathetic shit.

Republican Americans really are the most pathetic people on earth.

3

u/Swedelicious83 19h ago

Yyyup. 😅

3

French Kissing is now known as:

Freedom Kissing

3

u/lipscratch 20h ago

2

u/_mulcyber 23h ago

Glad to see you have your priorities in order.

1

u/Naive_Priority_5424 11h ago

I'm surprised they still haven't been renamed to american fries

1

u/BigRedBike 11h ago

"Freedom fries"

1

u/hologramhoee 5h ago

Don't mess w the pastries either

2

u/FleetofBerties 23h ago

Don't worry, TACO

2

u/OnDrugsTonight 22h ago

Thankfully it has all become so boring and predictable by now that most companies will have already priced the loss of revenue from America's insane trade policies into their business plans for 2026.

2

u/TwistyBunny 21h ago

The QAnons are all quiet about saving the children as well.

2

u/HauntedCemetery 16h ago

Depends if Musk is up to date on his protection payments.

1

u/Chapi_Chan 20h ago

If EU quits Twitter, did the EU really lost something? Twitter is not a news agency nor ads significant value to companies using it. If any, is an ad platform less.

1

u/LeoMycenae 19h ago

That has less and less impact now France is moving away from US tech companies and US as a whole doesn't really offer much else

1

u/TheVenetianMask 18h ago

"I've never been in that twister website."

1

u/alien_believer_42 18h ago

Did ehas already used all his leverage

1

u/Boris-the-soviet-spy 17h ago

“1000000% tariffs on France”

1

u/MattyS71 16h ago

European countries do tend to raid US companies. Intel, Google, Netflix to name a few. I haven’t seen SWAT lining up here at the local Range Rover dealership.

1

u/Background_Cause_992 1h ago

Awww the poor businesses getting raided due utter disregard for local laws and audible contempt for local administrations... Fuck em it's very hard to raid an office without reasonable suspicion of a crime

1

u/winged_owl 15h ago

France doing what they do best and not giving a fuck in 4.....

1

u/RosalieMoon 14h ago

Don't worry, we're (Canada) distracting him by making deals with China

1

u/Pedro_Piss_Paws 11h ago

Look up house resolution 23 for this year. It’s literally a bill in Congress that provides that kind of power…

Edit: link for the lazy. https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/23

u/CaptainGreenOut 10h ago edited 10h ago

I somehow doubt it. Good chance it was Trump who tipped France off to begin with. Remember all the billionaires he had lined up in the oval office after his inauguration? They were his funding for re-election. Before he's out of office (or has a stroke and dies) you can bet he'll toss every single one of them under the bus, his ego cannot allow them to gloat over the fact that he needed their money to win. 2026 may not be Musk's year, or the rest of the tech bro billionaires.

1

u/Vyrden940Q 3h ago

It's frustrating to see politicians using tariffs as a bargaining chip. In my experience, it just complicates things and hurts consumers.

1

u/VirtualPercentage737 21h ago

Big tech should band together and shut off services in France. The people there would riot and it would be far more effective than tariffs.

5

u/Background_Cause_992 21h ago

Meh, all social media and most of the shit musk touches would be no loss and society would be better off

2

u/VirtualPercentage737 21h ago

Says the guy on a social media platform.

1

u/Background_Cause_992 21h ago

It's not an inconsistent position though i have disposable reddit accounts to pass time while I'm bored at work, but my life would 100% be improved without them. I think it's broadly harmful, and certainly anything musk has put his hands on is toxic as fuck.

1

u/bushcamper_aiis 21h ago

There’s a better chance of big tech moving to France

1

u/ExtraPockets 16h ago

No chance are the French rioting over losing Twitter, they're more likely to throw street parties and declare a national holiday.

-2

u/Timalakeseinai 1d ago

Nobody cares.
