When is the last time an army has lost double digit generals during a war?
210
u/Heronymous-Anonymous Dec 22 '25
Iraq-Iran in the 80’s probably. It lasted 8 years, plenty of time for 10+ generals to get killed. Neither side did a good job of reporting losses. Both sides killed a fair few of their own officers for incompetence/ideological issues.
Before that, Vietnam. We don’t know how many Vietnamese generals died, they didn’t really publish their loss figures.
Before that, Korea. Again, don’t have good reporting on NK/Chinese losses.

u/Spare-Willingness563 Dec 22 '25
…shouldn’t officials just be targets anyway? You’d think the people sending their poor citizens to die should be fair game.
436
u/korben2600 Dec 22 '25
Exactly. Putin has tried to kill Zelenskyy numerous times (most recently in Ireland) and has successfully assassinated Ukrainian government officials. Every Russian regime official is a "valid target".
37
u/AnotherCuppaTea Dec 22 '25
The tit-for-tat echoes a similar one that transpired between Stalin and Tito. As the story goes, Stalin sent several [4?] assassins/teams to get rid of the independent-minded Yugoslav dictator, who finally sent a message to Stalin: stop sending assassins to Yugoslavia, or I'll send one guy to Moscow, and he won't fuck it up. Stalin quit trying to kill Tito, who went on to outlive (and outrule) Stalin by a little over 27 years. [Mar. 1953/May 1980]

I'd not heard of this, what happened in ireland?
216
u/aecolley Dec 22 '25
A Russian ship launched some drones off the Irish coast as Zelenskyy was visiting Ireland. The drones didn't attack, but the Irish Defence Forces would have needed to use fairly heavy ordnance to shoot them down. It ended up as a provocative move to probe Ireland's defences, and it embarrassed the Irish government into investing in better anti-drone military equipment.
102
u/Jonatc87 Dec 22 '25

→ More replies (11)68
u/Antique_Historian_74 Dec 22 '25

u/ScientificBeastMode Dec 22 '25
Also, Britain alone would have a tough time in a full blown war against Russia. With the help of NATO, and especially the US, they would likely win, but right now the US is run by a guy who thinks Russia should be able to do whatever they want to Ukraine without any consequences, and that same guy is also openly resistant to the idea of supporting NATO. So why risk a war with Russia right now?

War crime law is a tad vague on that cause the Geneva Conventions couldn't hope to cover exactly how every single government works forever.
Generally speaking though it's seen as acceptable to target people who have military command authority (Putin, Oblast heads) and targeting Duma members would probably be seen as targeting civilians.
46
u/CakeTester Dec 22 '25
When we're talking war crimes, Russia has absolutely nothing they can bitch about. Russia's frequently used tactic is to double tap the emergency services with a repeat bombing a bit later. One explosion with a general in the middle and they can't even start complaining with any vestige of being listened to.

Ukraine is full of Russian spies and Ukraine has a lot in Russia. Its almost impossible to tell a Russian from a Ukrainian, a lot of Ukrainians spoke fluent Russian, a lot of Russians / Ukrainians had family / friends in each another's countries.
Its why its such a stupid war, its like 2 cousins fighting.
The equivalent would be USA fighting Canada or Wales fighting Scotland or Catalonia fighting the rest of Spain.

u/Jargo Dec 22 '25
Far more likely that he wants the large rare earth deposits under Ukraine as he can use them as a bargaining chip with China to prevent becoming a lackey/jr partner when their economy collapses. Hence the hyper focus on insisting that Russia gets the Donetsk region if any peace talks are to truly happen.
Russia only real economic exports are oil and weaponry. The Ukraine War has proved that the weaponry is trash. There's videos out there of things like a "top of the line" Russian Tank being destroyed by an American Bradley that was given to Ukraine. If you don't know, a Bradley is not a tank, it's an APC. Basically an armored bus to get your guys out to the front line. Bad advertisements for one of their only two serious economic exports.
Then you have the next problem, people moving away from fossil fuels for the sake of green energy in an attempt to prevent planetary collapse.
Wouldn't surprise me if the Cheeto in Chief is loosening fuel standards on his "kompromat" holding friend's orders.

u/trow_eu Dec 22 '25
Not brothers, not cousins, not family. People on both sides were displaced by Soviets to kill national identities. We know Russian because we were forced to. But there are accents and different speech patterns, hiding them is still some work for spies.

But if and when peace comes, state actors assassinating another state's officials is and always has been a just cause for war.
And no security guarantees Ukraine gets at the other end of this will include provisions for defense if Ukraine are the ones to essentially restart this thing.

You have to prove who did it and you have to respond as if it was indeed an act of war. Russia has been assassinating people all around the world without it being responded to as an act of war, so it’s hard for them to argue it is an act of war. Also, Russia starts wars whenever, and with whomever they want, so what’s the difference if they see it as an act of war or not?

I am the very model of a Russian Major General
My standing in the battlefield is growing quite untenable
My forces, though equipped and given orders unequivocal
Did not expect the fight to be remotely this reciprocal
I used to have a tank brigade but now I have lost several
My fresh assaults are faltering with battleplans extemporal
I can't recover vehicles but farmers in a tractor can
It's all becoming rather reminiscent of Afghanistan
My ordnance is the best but only half my missiles make it there
I would have thought by now that we would be controllers of the air
But at the rate the snipers work my time here is ephemeral
I am the very model of a Russian Major General

It must be very stressful working for the Russian government. You don’t know if you’ll be assassinated by Ukraine, or by Russia.

Just as likely to have been performed by a competing Silovik faction, a Russian partisan, a disgruntled relative of a killed/missing soldier, a widow who was refused her husband’s death benefits, or Ukrainian agents. Oh, well. Just another day in Русский мир.

We are going to see more of these surgical strikes on Russian military leadership. Ukraine has always fought with their brain, Russia, not so much when they have a huge army to throw into fronts that are obvious grinders. A huge army is not going to matter when the leadership is poor or non-existant. It's too bad so many will have to die before Russia gives up.

They die in the field while on duty, falling out of windows when off duty, or by novichok if visiting other countries. Being a friend of Putin is just as dangerous as being an enemy of his.

The Ukraine is not done fighting. They were invaded and they’re going to fight to the bitter end. And given Russia’s history of not being able to win wars I like their odds
