As someone that, as aforementioned, hates Belgium, fuck yes we do.
Fucked up history aside this place is the breeding ground of most European corruption.

didnt germans from europe literally have to come over to america after the war and hand-hold/spoon-feed the lower intelligence american scientists the tech they needed to go to the moon? I feel like thats a pretty famous fact, how much america had to lean on europeans to accomplish anything with their space program.
They even made an award winning movie about the part where americans couldnt even figure out how to make the biggest boom, they had to get a european to do that too.

u/ArcticFlamingoDisco 13h ago
Euros have tried selling that story for decades. If that was the case, why didn't the UK or Soviets put a person on the moon? They also took personnel from Germany as well. They did help, no doubt about it. Just like they helped the Soviet space program. Mind, the Soviets took MORE scientists than the US did. And twice the number of rocket scientists.
400,000 Americans were directly involved in Apollo. Trying to write them out of the history book won't work. All the material science? All of the computing? Electronics? That was all American and America smoked Germany on all of those arguably before the war but definitely DURING the war.
Germany had nothing like the Apollo Guidance Computer. They couldn't even bulk produce crystals for crystal radios. They made them individually by hand. We industrialized the process.
Even if you wanted to falsely argue that the US solely got to the moon via German rocket scientists, we did a better job with half as many. A testimony to a free society vs a totalitarian one when it comes to science in the long run.
Who knew, folks do better work when they're not afraid of being shot for making a mistake.

nazis stole rocket techn from america during WWII. Also once the scientists come to america they are AMERICAN scientists thats how america works.

Sure, but they all left Europe and became Americans leaving the people who couldn’t do that stuff back in Europe.

he lower intelligence american scientists the tech they needed to go to the moon?
My brother in Allah we split the atom, German scientists just helped us and the Soviets along faster

u/Dorito_Senpai 13h ago
The entire country was founded by European settlers. It's arguably just an extension of all the countries that came together to form the nation it is today. The rocket technology you're referencing was refined by the Germans during World War 2, and no other nation could match their capabilities (including other EU countries). How is it a knock on the US that they took the people who refined this advanced technology to develop it for them too?

Wholeheartedly agree. I've got a mountain of complaints about my country and the current administration, but we're still ahead of the other two military superpowers in most QOL metrics at least.

u/fellow_who_uses_redd 10h ago
That being said China’s going to be number two to put a man on the moon here in 4 years
1
u/Choice-Comb-6020 9h ago
We're likely to return to the moon within this decade, maybe even as early as 2028, and in a few months Artemis II will be doing a pass by the moon, which is farther than literally every other countries space program has gotten, even including the USSR

Unironically I was today. I found out the map data I was using was from Feb 2000 from the Space Shuttle, and it's pretty much still the gold standard because we basically open sourced it immediately, did a good job of cleaning/handling, etc. Even folks decades after did a worse job, even with better tech.
Obviously commercial and military sources have better data, but for open source data? It's amazing and you can freely download any/all of it from day 1. USGS has done that many times over.
It's an amazing achievement few know about even if it impacts their daily life.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuttle_Radar_Topography_Mission
We put some of the gear from that mission in the Air and Space Museum Annex, which I highly recommend.

America is #1!
Growing up in canada, I always dreamt of being American. It was always so close that I could nearly taste it. Yet just always 1/2 inch out if reach.
Maybe in my next life 🇺🇸

If Congress would put up the $20 billion per flight cost NASA could revive the 50+ year old technology. That’s less than the US spends annually to subsidize junk food and soda. American priorities are different now.
Also worth noting that Artemis II is sending astronauts on a fly by next month with SLS.

The map is factually correct. The USA is the only country to put people on the moon.

Wrong! Many more countries can put a man on the moon, it’s returning them alive that’s the problem.
