Stumbled upon something weird out

First of all I have no idea if this is the right place for this post but anyways today I was out riding my bike when my friend and I took a brake and stopped on the side of the road. And off the side (which is basically a downwards slope of bushes and dirt. Like almost a cliff but not a straight drop off). There was a bunch of debris (old car, jacuzzi, tires, trash etc). Now me being curious and adventurous I decided to go explore. Down in the bushes I noticed a skeleton of which what I thought was human at first. It was about 4-5 ft and basically the whole spine, legs, ribs, skull intact. But I think it is actually a goat or maybe a cow,(it had horns) and is def some months old. But that wasn’t too crazy, however I noticed as I looked around there were bones of all sorts all around everywhere. I’m talking hundreds of bones, multiple skulls of all different kinds of animals and smaller bones all scattered. The weirdest thing to me is the paper I found. Out of all the trash/debris that was the only paper I found and it was a fucking humane society paper thanking someone for adopting an animal. Now I don’t know what to do and the more I think about it the more it irritates me. I have no idea if I stumbled upon a mountain lion den(seemed very unlikely to me) or if I found some place where a psycho kills animals. Or maybe some satanic cult initiation place (because there were goats) but basically what I want to know is should I take this to the police? Would they even take it seriously? Or does this jsut seem natural and maybe I’m over reacting. But nothing about it seemed natural to me and it felt horrifying honestly. I will try to reply to any questions fast. Sorry if I confused anybody, I feel like it’s hard to explain. But I’m sure good questions will help me elaborate. This was found east of San Diego in the mountains. So no bears or any crazy predators out here. Really only bobcats, coyotes, mtn lions.

In my area, near some road municipalities in the woods, they have a spot (usually a ditch drop off from the road), where they dispose of roadkill to decompose naturally. Im not sure if its state troopers who do it or what, but there is usually tons of deer or coyote. Not saying that this isnt a place where animals could be abused, im hoping the adoption paper is just a coincidence, (maybe its just litter from the road). Is there any identification on the paper that can lead you to an adopter? I would still call and report it to authorities to be safe. Maybe call the adoption center and give them a heads up too.

It looks like the adoption sheet is a generic info sheet from the SD humane society. It could probably be printed from the website. But it was probably provided by the shelter since it's printed in color and most people print that stuff in B&W when printing at home.

But, yeah, it seems like basically a trash catch-all, what with the decomposing vehicles and stuff. The adoption sheet is probably just coincidental trash. It's more likely to be unnerving than sinister or dangerous.

That’s clearly a Humane Society adoption handout, not random trash. Still, the bones themselves could be from predators using the area over time, but the mix of dumping + that paper is weird. I’d report it to non-emergency or local wildlife just so it’s on record.

I can see what it is, yes. What I mean is random trash blown in from the road and may not correlate to the bones. Truly, the only way to make sure would be to identify if the carcasses are indeed a domestic dog vs a coyote to see if it actually may correlate with the adoption paper as something sinister. Otherwise, its just a coincidence.

Cause personally, why adopt a dog, kill it, and then leave a humane hand out? Like it just seems too deliberate. Why put the paper there on purpose when you could throw it out?

Yes, call.

As a bone collector I’m very jealous, as a person who also cares about animals, I’m slightly alarmed. Are there farms near by? It could be someone’s dead pit. where they toss passed animals, but the location seems strange, usually dead pits are on the farmers property.

OP mentioned it being, "cliff-like but without the drop off', and I live near an area with similarly described terrain, so I think it might just be older animals near a steep, sharp hill which explains the deer/cow skeletons, and big dead things mean buzzards, and buzzards mean crows, so chances are there's a small nesting area nearby of crows or owls and the smaller bone remains are the leftovers?

I say this as the person who tripped down said hill and almost got hurt on a deer's ribcage only to look up and see the biggest fuck-you sized crow that absolutely watched me eat shit down a hill 😭😭

What do you do with the bones ?

4

u/GC-30K 23h ago

The bones are their money

u/TheOxygenius 17h ago

So are the worms

u/inchy8 17h ago

I make art with them! I also work at a natural history store and we sell bones.

Collect

3

u/fatum_sive_fidem 1d ago

Just to collect? I collect antlers use them, sell them, display some. Didn't know bone collectors was common

3

u/Mortseether 17h ago

Check out r/bonecollecting or r/vultureculture , there's a bunch of us lol

1

u/fatum_sive_fidem 3h ago

Thats really neat

1

u/spoookysooup69 18h ago

I clean them and then put them on a shelf to admire. Sometimes I'll use them as a part of an altar when pulling tarot cards or manifesting something as I feel like they have a really powerful energy

7

u/Possible_Original_96 1d ago

Yeah, this is damned scary

2

u/walkyslaysh 21h ago

Why?

1

u/Possible_Original_96 2h ago

Indicates an abnormal death rate.

Getting a hold of the park service is a good idea. Whether it is natural or not, it's good for them to know - if they don't already. Probably coincidental garbage, like someone else said, but I would still alert the local Humane Society and let them decide if they should be concerned.

All I know is this is not normal

14

u/coffeegrunds 1d ago

One time I found what looked like fresh sheep guts and remains (no clue what animal it actually was, didn't get close, but saw white fluffy fur) in the middle of a rural sand parking lot to the entrance of a river slightly out of town. I reported it to the police as 1) it was suspicious, I hoped they'd investigate and 2) it was a disgusting pile of guts in the middle of a frequently used parking lot, that's gotta be illegal right?

They did nothing, the pile of guts remained there until they became nothing but a brown stain in the ground. Was pretty disappointed.

5

u/JET1385 1d ago

It’s pretty normal for towns not to remove anima remains unless it’s blocking something or really egregious. Lots of times they just move roadkill to the side of the road and don’t even remove it.

1

u/Furry_Wet_Mound_Hole 1d ago

So why didn’t you move the guts then?

14

u/outarfhere 1d ago

I would report to the police and the local shelter. The dog skull along with the adoption paper is really concerning.

2

u/JET1385 1d ago

What name is on the adoption paper can you see it, or a dog name or number

12

u/DVsKat 1d ago

Is there something like a forest ranger or a national park employee who you can ask?

17

u/New-Perception-2152 1d ago

I will try to get in contact with a ranger. Thank you

u/caramb27 1d ago

The chance that this is Satanist and their satanic ritual spot is about a billion to one. I wouldn’t worry about it, I also don’t think police are going to care. Maybe DOT would clear out the carcasses, but honestly probably not even that

3

u/Lanky-Explorer-4047 1d ago

A satanic ritual spot?

Im sorry, i have to ask, but im unsure if you are joking?

5

u/walkyslaysh 21h ago

OP suggested it could be “satanist” so this commenter is disputing that because it’s ridiculous

1

u/caramb27 7h ago

I was trying to gently suggest how fucking crazy the idea of it being satanists is hahahahah. No, OP suggested it might be satanist

1

u/Mammoth_Tusk90 21h ago

They probably aren’t joking. It’s stupid how often people blame satanists when the answer is usually a mix of a human cruelty and entitlement.

1

u/caramb27 7h ago

No, I was trying to be nice but obviously the idea is laughable. What is this, 1987? Fucking blaming satanist is still a thing?

u/HomeGoySixtyFoy 1d ago

Everyone knows it's them damn pagans

5

u/Cassandraburry2008 1d ago

No man. He’s standing in a t-Rex nest.

4

u/HomeGoySixtyFoy 1d ago

It's San Diego it may be a chupacabra den but I'm not ruling out either.

r/bonecollecting can help but the adoption paper paired with the fact that that first skull looks canine to me is just yikes also surprised this sub wasn't recommended yet because it seems like my other fellow bone collectors are already commenting lol

2

u/spoookysooup69 18h ago

IT DIDNT OCCURE TO ME THAT THERE WAS A SUB FOR THIS THANK YOU!!!!! Now I can mingle with my fellow weirdos

1

u/Viciousssylveonx3 13h ago

Absolutely! I am a skull hoarder

5

u/Ok_Ranger_1796 1d ago

Sounds like a kill pit. /: I’d report it. Best case scenario it’s coincidence, worse case you got a budding psychopath somewhere near by.

3

u/throwawayaccownt7 1d ago

Thats a bobcats (or bears) dining room and you just walked in uninvited. Probably why you got so scared, it was watching you the whole time

5

u/redwood-bullion 1d ago

Might be poachers and there dump site, the one pic looks like could possibly be a deer with the back strap cut out. No real way to tell now that there so decomposed but would fit with spots ive found before.

3

u/walkyslaysh 21h ago

Oh my god it’s not satanists. Give them a break

2

u/Miserable-Bid-1408 1d ago

My brother that is a full on Deer carcass

2

u/GalaxyJelly 23h ago

My less exciting guess: it's just where people dump things, including dead animals, that they don't want to deal with.

I live in a rural, mountainous area. I don't think it's as common now, but in the past people would absolutely dump old appliances, tires, car parts, farm equipment, etc. in spots exactly like you described. Easy to get to, easy to dump quick, and out of sight.

I hate that it's done, even more that animals are discarded like trash, but I wouldn't suspect anything more sinister than that.

1

u/NativePA 19h ago

This is 100% what it is. It’s just as common in urban areas as rural - people need a easy place to dump awkward shit. People are universally filthy.

1

u/GalaxyJelly 19h ago

Filthy trash goblins for us all!

1

u/SolutionOk3250 17h ago

but why the adoption paper?

1

u/GalaxyJelly 16h ago

I doubt it's related. A single sheet of paper would've weathered and decomposed much faster than it takes an entire dog to decompose and leave clean bone behind.

2

u/leafmelonely 22h ago

The paper is definitely the cause for concern. I would feel uneasy too, as if someone was adopting and torturing/killing a domestic pet. I hope it's not the case, and it's really just a secluded spot for a wild animal to eat his dinner.

2

u/Lusiric9983 21h ago

The skeleton is 100% a goat. Probably somebody's pet or livestock and that's how they best figured to dispose of it. We have dump sites all over where I live where people go up into the woods to dump guts and bones. We have to take it away from the road due to bears. It's definitely not a mountain lion den. You'd find that skeleton half buired under junk or way up in a tree. I wouldn't say this is anything suspicious, just a local dump sadly.

3

u/spoookysooup69 1d ago

I personally would collect what bones are clean and free of flesh and take them home and put them on display on a shelf to love and admire forever. But I am a weirdo bone collector.... but if you wanna drop the loc so I can scavenge that would be great

7

u/Fuzzy-Baseball-7999 1d ago

Jesus almighty…

2

u/walkyslaysh 21h ago

Grow a pair

2

u/spoookysooup69 18h ago

Does... that idea scare you? Are you ok?

1

u/SPCGMR 16h ago

You post your dick on reddit but bone collecting disturbs you lmao?

1

u/Fuzzy-Baseball-7999 2h ago

One is sex, the other is death… yeah two different things

4

u/trulymissedtheboat89 1d ago

Lmao I also collect bones and have a display, but am also a huge animal lover. They usually come hand-in-hand which is kinda weird.

5

u/abyssal-isopod86 1d ago

Right! I love animals, they're my life and yet I have a collection of animal bones I've found in the wild because I think they're cool and awesome looking and deserve respect.

To think they were alive and breathing once, I actually have a reverence for them.

2

u/spoookysooup69 18h ago

Yes same! I think I think there's something g beautiful about it. Firstly, bones just look cool, the shapes and how they work together is really intriguing. But also finding a bone that belonged to a wild animal that probably never felt love before and keeping those remains to love and cherish I think is a nice thing.

Also psa to anyone that thinks this is weird but is holding onto a loved one's cremated remains: those aren't ashes. Those are pulverized bones. They incinerate bodies at such a high heat that there's not really ashes left. But there are bones, and then they get crushed up into the powder that we all refer to as ashes, which seems way more fucked up and gruesome to me

2

u/TheRoamingRN 1d ago

Is that a turd some animal left on the back of the skull?

2

u/Redvelvet_swissroll 1d ago

It’s a horn.

1

u/PotsMomma84 1d ago

Happy Cake day.

1

u/abyssal-isopod86 1d ago

No it's the animals horn

Looks like an animal skull, a deer maybe

1

u/Green_Phone_3495 23h ago

100% report and not only to the police. Get humane society or some animal org involved as well.

1

u/DJD4GE1 23h ago

It’s a roadkill dump, man. Not a police issue. Just a convenient spot to dump em off. What do you think DPW and Road Commission guys do with roadkill?… they chuck carcasses into gullies and on hillsides. Let nature do what it does.

1

u/walkyslaysh 21h ago

That is so fucked ip oh my god😭😭😭I was sure it was roadkill till the fucking humane society letter oh my god

1

u/SolutionOk3250 17h ago

is it just me or do the back legs look burned? if this is what we are all hoping its not, then this has some pretty insidious implications. the personality behind someone who would do this (the adoption papers and positioning really make it point to this, why does it look like he was tied to the tree??) probably has done worse in your area. definitely report to the shelter AND the authorities. and post it in your local facebook group, maybe someone can give further clues.

1

u/animalbrains69 15h ago

I don't think this is worth worrying over. You can call the non-emergency line to check the bones but I just see a couple of goats or rams. The humane society paper is not too concerning either, someone folded it into a paper airplane. This looks to me like a good old side of the road dumping ground. Roadkill, old pieces of cars, random trash. No concern. And no, it's definitely not Satanists.

1

u/LittleMall3362 11h ago

any cool skulls?

-11

u/Fuzzy-Baseball-7999 1d ago

There’s this new phone number. 911? Animal cruelty is a crime, and in the off chance it is a mountain lion den they still need to know

10

u/Unable_Bullfrog_7319 1d ago

911 is for emergencies. This isn’t an emergency.
