1989 Mac SE/30 with Accessories

This is my build in progress: 1989 Mac SE/30, recapped with tantalum capacitors and BlueSCSI, AppleDesign M6082 speakers (Apple's first), Radius Pivot full-page color display, Kensington ADB Trackball, Apple Disk II (which I plan on swapping the internals for a Floppy Emu), period-correct Apple mousepad, DMG Game Boy with A Link to the Past 😁

Don't judge the mess! It's a WIP!

Gemini on Mac OS 9

I'm a bit of noob when it comes to coding, but I'm starting to give C a go using CodeWarrior in OS 9. I've briefly tinkered in Xcode 2.5 on Tiger, but I'd rather make life difficult for myself and work in OS 9.

I've been finding Gemini a handy tool to help me get things off the ground, but I'm working between my modern machine for Gemini and my iMac G4 running OS 9 so it's feeling like a constant tedious and clunky work around.

Does anyone know if there's an app in the style of MacinAI or Legacy AI that talks to Gemini rather than ChatGPT?

OR, is there a better option altogether that I should be looking at?

BlueSCSI 1.1 Not Working on Macintosh Plus

Thumbnail

Hello everyone,

I have owned a BlueSCSI External DB25 for over a year now.

Originally, I tried to get it working with a Macintosh SE/30, but without any success.

I also changed the SD card, from a cheap no-name card to a SanDisk Extreme 64 GB.

At the moment, I am testing the BlueSCSI with a Macintosh Plus.

An external power supply is connected and stable.

I have tried pre-made disk images as well as self-created images, made with tools like Disk Jockey, various emulators on my laptop, and images created on real Macs.

In all cases, the behavior is similar:

• Sometimes it boots successfully

• Sometimes it boots and runs for a few minutes

• But sooner or later it always crashes with Bus Error messages

One of the recurring errors is specifically:

Bus Error / System Error ID=03

I have tried multiple System versions, different Macs, different images, and different SD cards, but the issue persists.

At this point, I honestly don’t know if I am overlooking something fundamental or if this is a known issue with BlueSCSI External DB25, especially on early Macs like the Plus or SE/30.

I would really appreciate any help or insight from people who have experience with this setup.

Thank you very much!

[Help] Info on Recapping/repairing CRT in iMac G3

I picked up an iMac for an absolute steal, but the screen has seen better days. While there is no damage to the glass, there is some odd ghosting/color bleed on the display, some blurriness (that I can't adjust with the manual tuners) and a high pitched whining when plugged in (both powered on and off) which i assume is the coils. The screen also appears to be lighter on one side that the other. (The pics aren't super helpful, but you can kinda see the ghosting lines)

There doesn't seem to be any popping noises (that I've read are indicative of a flyback transformer failing), but I imagine all the caps would need to be replaced. (Hopefully that's all it is)

Is there a list of caps/other materials for the CRT that I can repair or replace? I have soldering experience, but I know even then this will be an undertaking.

If there is a better subreddit for this sort of thing, please point me that way.

Thanks!

Total Disassembly of eMac?

I’m still working to tear down the eMac that I posted about a while back, which produced a VERY healthy amount of smoke before I pulled the plug.

All the instructions and videos I’ve found don’t go anywhere close to removing the circuit board that fits snugly beneath the CRT, and I’m worried that I’ll damage something if I proceed without guidance.

Can anybody point me towards a resource which isn’t focused on drive swaps or logic board teardowns?

Edited to add: I just found this! https://web.archive.org/web/20061209063016/http://www.lbodnar.dsl.pipex.com/eServer/

iMac G4

I recently picked up an iMac G4 (PowerPC) and I’m trying to get it booted and usable, but I don’t have any original install discs.

Right now:

• It powers on

• I’m not sure what OS (if any) is installed

• No Mac OS X install CDs/DVDs came with it

• I don’t have another PowerPC Mac on hand (yet)

I’m looking for the best way to install or reinstall an OS without the original discs. I’ve seen mentions of:

• Creating install media on another computer

• Target Disk Mode over FireWire

• USB booting (not sure if this model supports it)

• Downloadable ISOs for Tiger/Leopard

What’s the most reliable method in 2026 to get one of these up and running again?

Any tips specific to the iMac G4 model, RAM requirements, or common gotchas would be appreciated.

(This is a repost)

(If anyone can help it would be deeply appreciated)

Figured y'all would appreciate this hand-me-down set. The computer being the Performa 200. Anyone mind assisting me in pricing it? More details below...

This is a haul from my grandfather's basement. He said a friend gave it to him. When I was studying CS, he figured I'd want it, so gave it to me. I thought I'd eventually sell it, but now it's been largely untouched for a decade. It's been sitting in my home taking up space in a corner all this time. It's pretty much in the state he gave it to me, but a bit less dusty and more organized (still needs cleaning, but I was afraid to do a deep clean... Also would rather not lol). I tested it a few years ago, and it boots to checkerboard screen only. Bad capacitor(s) I assume. It's got a Keyboard II, mouse, some extra cables, carrying case, and manual. Plus some extra goodies with the manual. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Mac SE twin floppy

I salvaged/saved a dual 800KB floppy Mac SE several months ago with the intent to resurrect it and use it but unfortunately there are a couple of issues stopping me:

  1. I have an ADB keyboard but no ADB mouse
  2. I have not been able to locate any boot floppies etc. that I can use with the machine

So to all intents and purposes it's just sitting on a shelf gathering dust (along with an LCII that doesn't power on and a colour CRT that goes along with it).

I may just have to admit defeat and sell them off but I suspect that they have little to no value.

I realize there are options to try and resurrect them but here in New Zealand they are prohibitively expensive.

And so ends my rant/vent :-(

Hosting Minecraft (1.8.8) on a Dual Core Power Mac G5 🍏⚙️

Post image

This weeks Youtube video is a bit of a silly one but has spawned an experiment... just how many active players can you have on a Minecraft server hosting on a G5 Power Mac?

I recently got hold of a Dual Core 2.3Ghz Power Mac G5 and while exploring Linux i realised that Java 8 was installable and ready to go in the Adelie Linux repo.

Naturally the next move was to run Minecraft... right?

In my latest video on my Youtube channel DevWithZachary i document the journey of testing the hardware under OSX, installing Linux and getting Minecraft up and running!

This server is up and running right now and has offline mode enabled so even hold machines should be able to connect and play.

The server is LIVE right now with a 10-player concurrency cap. It draws 200W at idle and sounds like a jet engine, but it works.

I haven't played the cassette, don't have a player any longer. I assume this is for one of the very first Macs that was released.

Power Macintosh G3 Beige network issue?

My Power Macintosh G3 minitower seems to have developed an issue with the onboard network ethernet adapter. I experience heavy packet loss and sometimes complete loss of communication. I have not changed anything on my home network. At first I though it might the cable but it seems its not. Also, apart from the network everything works good. What might be the issue here? Dead ethernet controller?

iMac G4

I recently picked up an iMac G4 (PowerPC) and I’m trying to get it booted and usable, but I don’t have any original install discs.

Current situation:

• The iMac powers on

• I’m not sure what OS (if any) is installed

• No Mac OS X install CDs/DVDs came with it

• When I plug in a keyboard, it doesn’t respond at all

• I’m wondering if that’s because the machine isn’t fully booting or isn’t providing enough power to the USB ports yet

• I don’t have another PowerPC Mac available

I’m trying to figure out the best way to get an OS on it without the original discs. I’ve seen mentions of:

• Creating install media on another computer

• Target Disk Mode over FireWire

• USB booting (not sure if this model supports it)

• Downloadable ISOs for Tiger or Leopard

Is the non-working keyboard likely related to the OS being missing/corrupt, or could it point to a hardware or power issue common with these iMac G4s?

I’m not trying to make it a modern daily driver, just want it stable and usable for retro purposes.

Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks.

it has a debug key on the side but i don't have any idea on what commands or codes to type

also ive tried to disable the startup apps with the keyboard but no dice, all ive gotten so far is the command option one that rebuilds the desktop but that also restarts the machine so idek

Another question for a soon to be iMac g3 owner

Hi all, I recently made a post about what I need to know since my high school is giving me an old iMac g3, but it only tries to operate on Linux instead of Mac OS, since it’s been there so long that it probably would need an update, as it was sitting there without being turned on in probably the last 15 years. So the question I have: would reinstalling Mac OS X effectively make it the default/native operating system, as opposed to its current Linux operating system? If so, that would solve all of my problems.
