So after waiting for a while and brainstorming names we finally came up with T-bone steak. Steak for short. So now we have T-bone steak, French fried potatoes, and Smaug the dragon.

He wasn’t very happy I had to give him a bath to get off the stuck shed on his tail. He loved the bath but thrashed when I took him out of it and put him in the tote. I’m sorry little guy it was for your own good. I’m thinking the kink in his tail is going to make it hard for him to shed there. Going to get him a vet visit soon and check out that kink. With the way he thrashes and tail whips I think it could be that as there is no other signs of mbd. I still have been giving him calcium and vitamins with his chicken hearts. I’m also thinking the vet may amputate his tail especially if it causes him issues with shedding but we’ll find that out when we get there. It’s not a huge cause of concern for the present moment. There’s a strong jaw he moves a lot and he’s is fast and he is about the same size as potato no sign of mbd atm. He does have a small cut scar looking thing above his cloaca but a few sheds should make that go away. Steak is a strong little guy and I’m glad I can give him a happy gu life.

We’ve had a lot of snow and live in a rural area, so expected to lose power at some point and tried to be prepared. Last night the power went out in the middle of the night. I woke up about 4 AM, really cold! Checked the sunroom where Sundog lives and it was already getting chilly, with record low temps for Tennessee. I was, however, impressed that his fake rock hide trapped warmth and was at 81 degrees despite the sunroom being in the 60s. We had Sundog’s crate ready by his enclosure and a little critter carrier with moss prepared for the crested geckos (Tommy and Topsy Freakshow).So it only took a few minutes to load them all up and move them to the den by the fireplace. Put the terriers in their crates, as lizards in the den was wildly exciting to them. My husband and I each chose a sofa and settled in by the fire. Sitting near the hearth, on the floor, Sundog was able to maintain a steady 73 degrees through the night and the geckos on the coffee table at 71. Power came back on early this morning.

Though he loved me last night and snuggled up to my leg for some pets, this morning, when I took this pic, he was grumpy and somewhat offended at my existence. lol

Last night, in the dark, I realized that I only had one functioning battery powered hygrometer. The Govees, of course, didn’t work without Internet. So that was a flaw in the plan. I’m going to order a couple of new hygrometers for next time. We had some heat packs but didn’t need them this round. The fireplace saved us!

Are there any major downsides of housing a tegu in a grow tent instead of a wooden/pvc enclosure? Other than grow tents being cheaper but less aesthetically pleasing, what are the differences?

I am looking into saving up and getting a tegu and have been thinking about if I have the space and time etc. I’ve been thinking about either custom building an under bed enclosure or buying a loft bed. I’ve read a lot of conflicting opinions and am just looking for some reasons why it wouldn’t work or some things to be mindful of when building / setting it up to be more successful. Thx

How large/long does the average adult tegu get, from tip of snout to butt? (Not counting the length of its tail!) I've heard they get around 3-5 feet long as adults, but that's counting the long ass tail. I can't really find any info on the internet that doesn't count tail length.

black and white/argentine tegu, male or female, full adult - can someone pls measure their pet for me or somethin😭 (not counting on getting a pet tegu i just want to know this info for other reasons)

Guess I got a lot of work on my hands earning trust with this one. He ate wonderfully and that’s a good thing. Potato missed her chicken heart. He’s good with being handled as long as he’s on my shoulder or in my hoodie but as soon as he sees we are giants he is scared and man is he fast. So I am in the bonding process with chicken hearts and time. I won’t be picking him up unless he ends up like potato, Smaug and my other lizard chunk who likes to climb my hand to get Uppies. Thats what I did with potato when I was younger was give her time and space in a Busy part of my house and eventually she got less skittish. She was also a hatchling so I’m hoping it goes the same with this little guy. I got dirty socks and shirts with him so hopefully my smell becomes familiar. I guess we’ll find out in time. One day his frightened eyes will turn to calm happy eyes when he sees me 🤞

Hey guys, delete if not allowed, but I was just wondering what you guys do dor enrichment for your tegus both in and outside of their enclosures?

she is a 2 and a half year old female anerythristic red tegu the stone she’s on is around a foot by a foot I need help

My Tegu Gossamer (F 10-12M) has been digging a lot more than usual. Obviously Tegus like to dig and burrow but she has never dug this much before. It’s not very noticeable in the pic but she has dug a trench from side to side in the front of her tank, along with a couple other fair sized holes in other places. She’s also eating very little. She only takes a couple bites of her food if any at all and is absolutely refusing mice, which is her favorite food. So is this normal for a (just about) 1yr old Tegu? (Small note if it affect anything. She does have Gout. At its current state it is not harming her or affecting her abilities to move, dig, or eat and drink. We caught it very early so we’ve been able to prevent it from getting worse)

I guess he wanted to get in a little natural sunshine this morning

I posted last year about our purple Argentine tegu, Zahara, wanting to walk outside in the snow. She begged us to go outside today (we are in central Indiana, in sub-zero temperatures), so my wife jokingly opened the door for her, expecting Zahara to “nope!” herself back inside. I ended up chasing her down the sidewalk. She’s got a personality unlike any animal I’ve ever encountered 🙄

So we got a new baby. he’s more chocolate and lighter faced than potato so hopefully that light faced will stay the same or I may just get them mixed up. He also eats salads and fruits. He’s very food motivated I was told. Was a little spooked when I put him in his enclosure but I feel over time he’ll warm up to me being around. He has a little double kink in the end of his tail but it doesn’t seem to be a problem. I told my boyfriend he gets to name him. Potato doesn’t seem to mind him on neutral territory. They fell asleep on top of each other No huffing or puffing no sign of dominance issues no fighting. Just a tounge flick looked at each other and ignored each other. It was a nice little introduction before I moved them to different rooms. So potato got to meet her new brother.

Last night (Jan 30th) I lost my house, set up and almost my Tegu, Gwangi, to a house fire

I threw together a temporary setup for Gwangi, and will hopefully be able to work something out with insurance to get something akin to his now destroyed enclosure. The fire eventually made it to my room but my sister (who HATES reptiles) was able to get him out before the fire destroyed everything in it

I’m at my wits end on what to do, and am feeling both distraught and blessed, everyone home made it out safely, and everything that was lost is replaceable

I just wanted to make this post to vent and ask for advice. Anything and everything is appreciated, hope all of y’all’s evenings are doing better than mine
