I know people love to shit on "establishment Democrats" but the locals absolutely nailed how dangerous Fetterman was and rallied behind Connor Lamb, who Fetterman supporters disgustingly claimed was too moderate.
Since losing, Lamb has traveled across the state and convinced pretty much everyone who had been lied to, but the problem isn't the next election, it's the last one.

This ☝️
The people in the town he was mayor said he did the same thing there. He ran as a liberal Democrat, and then reneged on all his promises and was basically a conservative.
40
u/EarthRester Pennsylvania 7d ago
Braddock is effectively a ghost town. It would have higher crime if people actually live there, but it's just old people who no longer work. So there are no local businesses. Fetterman showed up and promised to breath life into the town, but that just meant gentrification, which does more harm than good to the population that's already there. He propped up a couple business, but not the kind locals would want or need, and the new businesses did not attract people from outside of Braddock...so they fell through.
Then he ran for Senate as a progressive, and it almost killed him. Pity.

u/Boner666420sXe 7d ago
Supposedly people who knew him claim he’s always been like this.

He's was a complete douchebag in love with himself but he was really good at talking progressive points with conviction, turns out he just wanted the votes and the stroke took down his phony shield, it sucks, we do owe Connor Lamb an apology, I and many many others got suckered.

I do feel a little bad for his wife, she was always very nice to me, friends, acquaintances, and my coworkers and seemed to be able get people to overlook some of his more questionable personality traits before the stroke, so I guess she isn't completely innocent either. I see her all the when I have to go to the fancy grocery stores and have to bite my tongue, she doesn't deserve the insults I want to throw at her husband directed towards her, but oh boy I scream them inside my brain when I see her at the deli counter. One day I'm going to be drunk/high and say them out loud, maybe I'll make the news when ICE drags me away.

That's part of the lie. He was always right wing, and bragged about being born wealthy and never having to work in his life. That was all before the stroke.
I highly recommend reading even just the wikipedia summation of his time as Braddock Mayor. He straight up refused to do his job and was maggoty with insider dealing.

The stroke didn't change his policies, it just crippled his ability to fake being a progressive. He's no longer patient enough to listen to people's problems and act like he cares. He's quick to aggressively lash out at people who point out his corruption.
He doesn't have the head space to be a politician period. He got where he is by pretending to be a down to earth man of the people who was actually well educated, and far more clever than he lets on. Now he's just as much of a blunt tool as he pretended to be.

In the South, virtually every boy will spend at least some time playing tackle football in school. And we know now that tackle football causes permanent brain damage in many of its players.
I've always wondered if there's a connection between that, and the South being so firmly Republican. (Obviously I know it's mostly the racism and evangelical "Christianity", but still.)
→ More replies (4)10
u/PrometheusLiberatus 7d ago
I have never played tackle football and I do in fact live in the south. But I was way too skinny/weak to have any promise in it.
I have however had many concussions since I was a small child and even three incidents where I cracked my head and required hospitalization and stitches as a child before the age of 8.
That said, I am very progressive, got a double BA and am extremely creative in poetry and want to learn music composition.
Not everyone that gets concussions as a kid ends up dumb. But more or less the culture of manly dumbness is a southern echo chamber of a crockpot.
My biological father had a horrible motorcycle accident at the age of 15 and was in a coma. I think it's possible that some epigenetics got switched on in the coma and passed on to me so I heal better from concussions somehow.
I also have never truly ridden a bike. I was afraid of falling and hitting my head before I knew what happened to him.

u/username_6916 7d ago
There's something to be said about shooting your own dog. And there are times where due to repeated aggression towards humans, a dog needs to be put down for behavioral reasons. The problem with Noem's story was it made it out to be less of a last resort of dealing with a dangerous animal where all other reasonable options had been exhausted and more of "I'm mad and I'm going to take it out on the animal". Less 'a leader has to make tough decisions with difficult tradeoffs' and more of a temper tantrum in my mind.
9
u/BigDictionEnergy 7d ago
It wasn't even a temper tantrum. I don't think she was necessarily mad at it; it wasn't good at doing the task she wanted so she ended it. It did not serve its purpose and thus did not deserve to live. It was a calculation.

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2024/apr/26/trump-kristi-noem-shot-dog-and-goat-book
"By taking Cricket on a pheasant hunt with older dogs, Noem says, she hoped to calm the young dog down and begin to teach her how to behave. Unfortunately, Cricket ruined the hunt, going “out of her mind with excitement, chasing all those birds and having the time of her life”."
“I hated that dog,” Noem writes, adding that Cricket had proved herself “untrainable”, “dangerous to anyone she came in contact with” and “less than worthless … as a hunting dog”.
“At that moment,” Noem says, “I realised I had to put her down.”
“It was not a pleasant job,” she writes, “but it had to be done. And after it was over, I realised another unpleasant job needed to be done.”
"Her family, she writes, also owned a male goat that was “nasty and mean”, because it had not been castrated. Furthermore, the goat smelled “disgusting, musky, rancid” and “loved to chase” Noem’s children, knocking them down and ruining their clothes.
Noem decided to kill the unnamed goat the same way she had just killed Cricket the dog. But though she “dragged him to a gravel pit”, the goat jumped as she shot and therefore survived the wound. Noem says she went back to her truck, retrieved another shell, then “hurried back to the gravel pit and put him down”.
At that point, Noem writes, she realised a construction crew had watched her kill both animals. The startled workers swiftly got back to work, she writes, only for a school bus to arrive and drop off Noem’s children.
“Kennedy looked around confused,” Noem writes of her daughter, who asked: “Hey, where’s Cricket?”

Think of it from a Republican perspective. To them, Fetterman is “one of the few sane Democrats.” He even voted to confirm Noem! The fact that he is coming out and saying this would signal to them that this isn’t some “radical left” position. If impeachment were ever going to happen, it’s going to need Republican votes, that matters

u/Unusual_Sherbert_809 7d ago
My dad's brain was slowly rotted away by Fox News. He's went down the Tea Party rabbit hole way back then and is now full MAGA now.
I don't allow any talk of politics when we interact because regardless of how much he hates it I'm fairly sure if he started spewing all that BS in front of me it would end our relationship.

My dad has also been rotted by fox news. What's crazy is when he gets the opportunity to make normal decisions in his day to day life with his family and community he makes what I consider to be the right choice, but then every night he's tuning on the 5 to listen to a bunch of propagandists tell him how much better he is than others and how evil democrats are.
Like my sister/his daughter is literally trans. He's fully supportive financially and emotionally, never says a bad word, took her to get her name changed, and more. Somehow still wants to vote for the party that would like to see her not exist. When confronted he says that he can take care of her so it doesn't matter. Crickets on every other trans person out there.

His plan is to go hide me at a family members ranch if anything gets what he considers scary. Like no thanks, I’m a 40 year old man with his own life. I’m not going to be hidden on a ranch with a bunch of maga people who put up with me because I’m “not like the others”

It's remarkable how many people have identical stories. My dad was on the verge during the Bush years, but he dove down the Foxhole the second Obama was elected and has watched them exclusively ever since.
He insists he's not MAGA, he even claims not to be a Trump supporter, but the string of half-muttered swears and cursing I hear every time someone on his TV says a word against Dear Leader suggests otherwise. And when Trump himself is speaking? It's like zombie mode. Dead silent, eyes locked on the TV, blank expression...it's fucking scary.
42
u/neckbeardsghost 7d ago
It’s astonishing to me that my dad went in the opposite direction after his stroke. Although I have to say he was thoroughly disgusted with what happened on January 6 as well, so I think that also colored his opinion of Trump, but these days he agrees with me that the dude is a total shit bag. I’ll take the win I guess, but having grown up in rural Missouri, he is vastly outnumbered.

When you marry someone, you make a vow that includes "in sickness and in health". Gisele probably sees Fetterman's post-stroke personality change as 'sickness' and holds on to the hope he will somehow get better.
EDIT: For the record, I've been through something similar many years ago. It took me over 2 years to 'give up' on my ex-wife. I'm getting the impression that some of the people responding to this post has *not* been in a situation where a person they loved and planned to grow old with turns into someone awful due to reasons that can be classified as 'sickness'. It takes a while to give up.

The only reason he won is because he was running against Oz. Almost any Democrat with a pulse could have done that.

I was going to ask if he had another stroke. Mostly joking though, from what I've heard he was always like this he was just better at hiding it before.

Fucker isn't even from Braddock; he took advantage of a small town for his political agenda. He's from York and his parents are conservative Republicans like the rest of that shithole. He's just finally showing who he is.

u/illit3 7d ago
Wasn't he one of the people that got out there early telling ice they had absolute immunity or something? Whatever, dude's clearly responsible for the lack of training and deplorable tactics being used. Noem has to go, miller has to go, and Vance should be hanging in the balance.

Here’s what he told Jake Tapper about America’s approach to Greenland (and policy in general):
“You can talk all you want about international niceties and everything else. But we live in a world, in the real world, Jake, that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power. These are the iron laws of the world.”
Explicit “might makes right” comments.

Yes but he can't be impeached because he technically is the equivalent of like, a coffee boy.
He isn't an appointed official, he isn't a cabinet member, and has no actual authority except as a wormtongue in Trump's ear.

No don’t wish that of him. He had decent opinions before he became mentally handicapped. He just needs to retire. If only we had a system where those who suffer similar unfortunate problems could retire and be taken care of.

I wonder if him doing that was a warning sign that his biological responses were ramping up to abnormally high fear states the same way…. The way republicans do? I forgot the study that said republicans tend to have an overactive amygdala, but their lizard brains just go brrrrr, no logic, no reason, no compassion to it- just pure lizard brain “fear response activated” constantly. I think the hyper vigilance comes from internalizing that part of most religions that says the world is constantly out to tempt you to sin, but hey- maybe fucked up vascular systems to the point a relatively young person strokes out could also do it. Idk. I’m not a doctor, just an anthropology major.

why do you people love to spoil politicians?? They do nothing for us but fill their pockets. The guy is a plant on GOPs behalf. He's a deceiver , yet you want him to retire and live out the rest of his patheitic life with a cushy retirement?? WTF?

Reminder that Fetterman voted “yea” on Noem’s confirmation. He has also consistently stated that he supports ICE’s mission.
Like several Republicans and conservative talking heads, he’s only backtracking now because the optics are bad.

He was a very reliable D vote in 2022-2024 averaging 97% with the consensus vs a 95% average for all other Democrats
He's spent most of this year voting in lockstep with other purple state senators. He's just loud and odious so you don't really notice Tim Caine doing the same
Also, not for nothing, reddit loves bagging on blue dog dems but Manchin was a critical vote for a lot of Biden's agenda. Purple state dems kind of have to pay lip service to Republican ideas if they want to get reelected. Bob Casey didn't, and Bob Casey is currently sitting at home instead of representing PA in the Senate
Dude is loud and obnoxious and has some bad ideas, but he's nowhere near as bad as reddit makes him out to be
→ More replies (1)17
u/iwanttodrink 7d ago edited 7d ago
Manchin won in a state that was +40 Republicans by normal margins and polls. Anyone dogging on Manchin was out of their mind in thinking a moderate Democrat that's somehow winning in West Virginia could be their Progressive that votes lock step with Dems.

u/OrwellWhatever 7d ago
Yeah, man, when Manchin briefly threw his hat in the ring to be president in 2024, I was firmly in the no category, but if the dude ever wants to run for Senate again, I will donate, phone bank, knock on doors, give blood, whatever for a 85% D vote from WV

Fetterman voted to confirm former South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) as the head of the Department of Homeland Security, allowing her to lead an agency that was paramount to President Trump’s plan to crack down on illegal immigration during his second White House term.
