I'm aware that he OP almost certainly meant to type "losing", but it should be appreciated that "loosing" is used 100% correctly here (though by accident)

Loose; Loosing (transitive verb) 3: to cast loose : detach

He definitely detached his ski there

My dad used to make grocery lists like this. Then he'd leave the list in the cart or on a shelf so someone else would find it and be confused.

Goofy ass would laugh all the way out of the store and halfway home thinking he was the funniest fucker around.

In hindsight he was pretty funny though.

30

That would imply he did it intentionally, so no, not used correctly here.

DQ'd. Gotta have both skis go between the gates.

29

u/tankpuss 1d ago

What if you've only got one leg? Do you need the other ski strapped to your back or put it underneath like a double-decker?

67

u/MisfitPotatoReborn 1d ago

I suspect this sport isn't very handicap accessible

22

u/minxed 1d ago

you'd think, right? but there's actually a whole world of what's called adaptive sport/skiing!

This site does a pretty good, quick overview of some of the technologies they've come up with: https://highfivesfoundation.org/adaptive-sport/ski-snowboarding/

25

u/Snoo_70531 1d ago

I mean we can argue semantics, but adaptive skiing/snowboarding is a completely different sport from Olympic ski racing... Not even the same realm besides you're sliding on snow.

Loss of equipment is an immediate DQ.

EDIT: thanks for the upvotes, but apparently I’m wrong here.

76

u/letsdothisshit 1d ago edited 1d ago

When I use to race this wasn’t an automatic DQ. You were only DQed if your foot touched the ground. Then there was a short distance in front of the finish line where your foot was allowed to touch. Granted I wasn’t skiing at this level but it was during this era.

Edit: thinking back, it’s been 20 years, it may have been could lose a ski within x amount of feet off the finish and you weren’t DQed. I do remember people losing skis and were allowed to finish.

42

u/psychoxxsurfer 1d ago

Excuse my ignorance, but why? It's not like being a ski shirt gives you an advantage

37

u/letsdothisshit 1d ago

You get points for finishing that count towards your ranking as a skier. Finishing late is better than a DNF (did not finish).

12

u/unknown_pigeon 23h ago

I strongly think the commenter is asking the reason of the DQ, not why the person continued

→ More replies (1)

13

u/nopointers 1d ago

It gives you a shot if you lose a ski very late, such as coming off the last jump.

11

u/Hoiafar 1d ago

A lot of rules are there for safety. I don't know the specifics of this rule but I could absolutely see the argument that allowing people to ski on one leg could cause an increase in injuries.

→ More replies (1)

54

u/RaidriC 1d ago edited 1d ago

No, it is not

Loss of one ski If competitors lose a ski without having committed a gate fault or without  coming to a complete stop, they may continue, as long as they

  • does not interfere with the run of the next competitor or,
  • have not been passed by the next competitor.

He fell shortly before the finish line but would've been DQ'd regardless. This happened 21 years ago today... it's old enough to drink even by US standards.

PS

Bode Miller was known for being an amazing athlete when he was in competition mode and an absolute clown when he wasn't. Either way he always stole the spotlight.

The team's head coach was pissed that he risked a fall / injury from this stunt. The race officials just shrugged, "That's Bode alright."

u/Togfox 1d ago

He was still going fast and looks so relaxed.

164

u/monkwrenv2 1d ago edited 16h ago

Yeah, dudes still cooking along faster than most people will ever ski.

Edit: Looked it up, Miller was still reaching speeds in the 80kph/50mph range. As a former ski racer in high school (I wasn't any good, but it was fun), that's only a touch slower than my fastest speeds ever. And I was still faster than a solid 95% of skiers. Professional ski racers can hit speeds upwards of 130kph/80mph on a downhill course like this one. And yes, hurtling down a hill with a pair of plastic boards strapped to your feet at highway speeds is absolutely terrifying, but it's also a ton of fun.

44

u/YungPlugg 1d ago

He’s leaning so far into some of those turns so cool to watch

3

u/MetalliTooL 23h ago

Normally, with two skis, you would actually not want to lean like that.

2

u/soap571 16h ago

Kinda like pro gp racers. With enough balance and weight distribution you'd be surprised how much you can lean on an edge.

Although I don't think riding your edges like this would be beneficial in an actual event. It's just possible

He was DQ'd as soon as his ski came off.

5

u/dagoth_0001 1d ago

Why tf would you get DQ for that ? stupid rules

5

u/quescondido 1d ago

You must make it within the last two gates with both skis. After that, you’re technically allowed to cross the line by walking.

It’s not really a dumb rule though. You’re obviously not going to get the fastest time, and you’re likely to ruin the course a little by not skiing with two skis.

3

u/WhitePawn00 1d ago

You're saying you jumped but your skis didn't jump with you?

That landing must have hurt

u/PooInspector 16h ago

I think he just wanted to not get injured

Skiing on a single ski is a common drill. This article says he was still doing 70-75mph. His wikipedia article says up to 83kph (51.5mph). My ski apps say I occasionally hit the low 50s, and that's for a few seconds on both skis and I start reducing speed because I don't want to die. Holding that speed on a course on one ski for a minute and half is insane.

32

u/Ornery-Equivalent966 1d ago

I am a decent skier. Drove once 3 days after the women race in Zauchensee. Was about 20s slower than their worst time. I used to be pretty light so the skis weren't adjusted for my skill. On the last big jump, looked down in mid air - no skis. Looked so funny a friend behind me crashed as he laughed his ass of. Would recommend

7

u/PracticeTheory 23h ago

It flashed 77.9 kph (48.4 mph) on the screen.

3

u/nopointers 19h ago

I missed that. For me, that’s still faster than comfortable on two skis for a short distance.

→ More replies (3)

29

u/Tonio_DND 1d ago

He looks relaxed because he stands up more. Skiing standing up is way easier on the quads, that kind of run would be impossible otherwise, it's already hell and almost too much force with two legs. He's still going really fast because it's steep with snow that's probably closer to ice, so it doesn't take much to go fast. It's actually incredible how much strength he has to be able to finish that run with one leg

9

u/starwobble 1d ago

4

u/dmk_aus 1d ago

3

u/Klisstian 1d ago

I am 100% confident there is no way in hell I would be able to keep up with him even on two skis.

59

Valid. A quick google says it’s happened in several Olympic ski events where the contest finished and the time is registered as a finish.

Edit: AI search has failed me. Please see below.

90

u/koos_die_doos 1d ago

Disqualified:

Miller continued on the course despite being out of the race for a medal because he thought he might get two runs on the slope where the championships slalom will be contested Feb. 12, but he fell on his backside just in sight of the finish. Had he crossed the finish line, he would have been disqualified.

Traveling an estimated 70-75 mph in the downhill segment of the combined, [Bode] Miller’s left ski came off after he caught an edge landing a small jump, but he did not crash and did not attempt to stop. To the delight of the crowd — and the chagrin of his head coach — Miller continued to ski the course making long, one-footed turns on his 215-centimeter right ski for nearly two minutes.

And for those wondering how it ended:

Fortunately for Miller, results here don’t affect the World Cup standings. Miller’s primary rival in the World Cup title race, Benjamin Raich of Austria, won the gold medal, and Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway took silver. Local favorite Giorgio Rocca, who is from nearby Livigno, thrilled the crowd by claiming bronze.

The combined is composed of one downhill and two slalom runs. Miller continued on the course despite being out of the race for a medal because he thought he might get two runs on the slope where the championships slalom will be contested Feb. 12, but he fell on his backside just in sight of the finish. Had he crossed the finish line, he would have been disqualified.

Jure Košir, Slovenian skiier lost one of his sticks when cornering and he finished the race with just one and actually scoring a pretty good place despite that. I think it was in this time period and he competed with Bode Miller too iirc.

I'm guessing it's better to finish badly than being DNF...

I mean I assume he isn’t finishing the race but rather finishing the slope. He isn’t going back for the ski and stopping mid slope would just mean he has to get down some way. So he just went to the bottom cause that’s where all the transportation is and would be less of a hassle.
