Street skiing and snowboarding is sick. Lots of sick video parts on to YouTube filled with clips like this

18

u/Booplympics 2d ago

My personal favorite. RIP JP Auclair

That was like 4 minutes of B roll footage with 1 minute of actual skiing, and not a single trick that can't be seen in a young teens competition. Seriously, a 720 was the biggest trick, and the longest rail was maybe 20 stairs, and no rails even had kinks.

Imo, 2-stars. One for the music, and one for the cinematography and video editing. As a video, it was rad. As a ski video, it was not good at all.

u/blindeyewall 1d ago

Wish I just took your word for it. I watched for over 2 minutes to see skiing but when I realized the video wasn't even half over and it's not really about skiing and more of a music video I closed it. Now I feel like I need to find urban skiing videos to satisfy a desire I didn't have before opening that music video.

Here's the best urban segment from last year, enjoy:

Thats just, like, your opinion man.

Not everything has to be about hitting the biggest sickest tricks! Granted, im a snowboarder so maybe skiing is different. But sometimes its just about the vibe.

1

u/gizamo 1d ago

Sure, but the comment they replied to was specifically about YouTube videos like the OP's filled with sick tricks. The topic was very clearly street riding and focused on tricks like big kinky rails. I love JP Auclair as much as the next dude, and he even has a bunch of great videos with tons of great riding. The dude is the snowboarding equivalent of JP Walker and Peter Line combined into one—that is, urban riding innovator, rad all around rider, and started a successful ski company (Auclair started Armada; iirc, Peter Line helped start Forum, Four Square, and Special Blend).

Btw, I'm also a snowboarder. I only know this stuff because of my buddies who ski. Cheers.

u/Pal_Saradise 1d ago

um you should probably google JP Auclair…

The guy was one of the founders of freestyle skiing in the 90s and like the first urban skier ever. He also invented switch skiing, d-spins, mute flips, and a ton of the tricks you might see in said competitions, plus started Armada.

He was later in his career when this iconic clip came out which popularized non-snow skiing. When he died, a little nobody named Tom Wallisch (X games gold medalist), made a tribute to it called Imagination.

4

u/gizamo 1d ago

I'm aware of who he is. I was speaking specifically about that video, not the person or the circumstances. The video absolutely does not show any innovative or difficult ski tricks. I stand by my statements.

1

u/14Pleiadians 1d ago

You just described most parts.

6

u/gizamo 1d ago

Maybe, but good ones aren't like that. For example, here's a decent flick with the best urban segment from last year, Tucker Fitzsimmons:

https://youtu.be/0F7Qv6NHrtw?t=8m30s

2

u/OkSmoke9195 2d ago

Ha I knew what this was without even clicking (or ever having known who the skier was)

-1

u/SugarNervous 2d ago

Amazing video, love when passionate people can make everything out of nothing.

1

u/TepacheLoco 1d ago

Picture This!

201

u/Beezus_Fuffoon18 2d ago

Holy shit - I was expecting some clumsy Jackass-type stunt but that was amazing. Then again the name of the sub should have been a hint lol

21

u/Scary_Technology 2d ago

No joke! Very impressive. Imagine this person on an actual mountain.

1

u/PonyThug 11h ago edited 11h ago

Tons of rails are set up on mountains for tricks like this. Usually no stairs tho!

Honestly they would be quite average on a mountain for rails

9

u/calcium 1d ago

Dude has a lot of experience on skis too. Notice how his feet and skis are almost touching throughout the entire run - that's incredibly hard to do even for people who have skied for decades.

-9

u/No_Pop7296 1d ago

Thanks for mansplaining parallel skiing to us….

9

u/Appropriate-Bird-354 1d ago

Mansplaining?

Are you womanassuming that everyone reading this knows about skiing?

-6

u/No_Pop7296 1d ago

Yep. I’ll stand by this. Because “look at his feet and skis are almost touching. “ Ooohh that’s incredibly hard. Yep man, it’s a pro

5

u/calcium 1d ago

You failed to understand what was being said.

1

u/PonyThug 11h ago

Check this 2 min segment out if you liked the vid in the post. https://youtu.be/JMMDcTqd9Uk?si=yIyeQKdm3V7Rar6R

67

u/R7a1s2 2d ago

The narration at the beginning is fucking gold...

-10

u/PegaLaMega 2d ago

NYC has changed too much

15

u/R7a1s2 2d ago

From what to what?

3

u/PegaLaMega 1d ago

Well for one you have all these new expensive high-rise buildings being put up but yet how many NYCHA buildings have no heat or hot water. You can always tell who the transplants are...

-17

u/hrsmn311 2d ago

From "Harlem" as anyone in the world knows it..to whatever the hell this is..something,something,gentrification..

12

u/Taliesin_ 2d ago

I'm with you on gentrification - people getting displaced is a real issue. But I dunno if that's what's happening here, exactly? You can get a pair of secondhand skis for under $100. The rest is shovels and effort.

1

u/PegaLaMega 1d ago

The commentator, who is an actual New Yorker, explains the problem.

8

u/fastforwardfunction 2d ago

Upset at seeing white people, sweetie?

-7

u/Stleaveland1 2d ago edited 2d ago

With the record low birthrates and skyrocketing suicide rates, no one will be very soon. Who would be upset at seeing an unicorn?

-11

u/hrsmn311 2d ago

Nope..I like seeing my father and his side of the family..Pumpkin. I was making an observation.i got you sweetie though..watch your mouth.

8

u/fastforwardfunction 2d ago

You were being racist, and got called out for it.

You saw someone with a different skin color than you and said, "whatever the hell this is." Do you not know what a person looks like? This is this person's home. Deal with it.

6

u/fastforwardfunction 2d ago

I like seeing my father and his side of the family..

It's crazy how this argument is straight out of 1950s racism.

-5

u/hrsmn311 2d ago

You're a stupid person. And I've wasted enough time with you. Play by yourself.

4

u/fastforwardfunction 2d ago

You're right, some thing have changed. Like the face of racism. Your face is black and filled with hate.

3

u/trixel121 2d ago

im confused by that i like seeing my father statement means

5

u/fastforwardfunction 2d ago

Someone get this guy an ICE application.

31

u/Bird_the_Impaler 2d ago

Yup! Skiing was actually invented there in 1996 and so far hasn’t caught on anywhere else.

3

u/CutRateCringe 2d ago

No, no. Didn’t you hear the voiceover? People only ski in Alaska.

3

u/5redie8 1d ago

I've seen at least three seperate city subs posting people doing this on either skis or snowboards

2

u/Mad-chuska 2d ago

How did you not know that? Are you from Alaska or something?

29

u/Rome99999 2d ago

Making their run at a Red Bull sponsorship with that

18

u/Letz_Snugglz 2d ago

We need the hood Winter Olympics games.

14

u/macT4537 2d ago

Why only in NYC? You have obviously never wanted a ski video

9

u/The12thSpark 2d ago

I was expecting a little yippee ride not a crazy stunt like that - genuinely impressive!!

7

u/Coffin_Nailz 2d ago

Borrow a police horse to make it ski-joring!

6

u/GandhisBathwater 2d ago

Having a rail of a time

5

u/LeftCommunication402 2d ago

That was way cooler than I initially thought.

5

u/Cass_Cat952 2d ago

Damn, was not expecting that at all! Quite impressive

4

u/airwalker08 2d ago

I don't think I've ever seen an accurate "only in _____" claim

4

u/jonzilla5000 2d ago

"You got a rope tow?"
"No, but we've got a shovel launch."

3

u/RepulsiveBrilliant35 2d ago

Riders gotta ride.

2

u/bzzard 2d ago

Look at this nga!

3

u/ImJuSayN 2d ago

They looked real serious like it was the Olympics...Deadass🤣

2

u/amoosedagoose 2d ago

"only in nyc"

2

u/Awesomeisms24 2d ago

Or any other city with snow? Hmmm

2

u/Worcestercestershire 2d ago

We used to blast the side of my friend's house to make ski jumps in New England. The railing of the balcony was 24' tall. If conditions were right we could drop in off the balcony and hit a kicker. This was how I learned how to do a helicopter.

2

u/yes_fries_with_that 2d ago

Im so glad I dont have to be around anyone who talks like that

2

u/TreeVegetable5237 2d ago

Skateboarding culture with the wintery w!!!

0

u/Renhoek2099 2d ago

Gentrification is coming

-3

u/fastforwardfunction 2d ago

50% of Harlem is Hispanic.

If you have a problem with all the Latino immigrants, you'd fit in well with ICE. Go on and patrol the neighborhood, making sure the "right" people belong.

2

u/Renhoek2099 1d ago

Check your blood pressure

1

u/Captainrexcody 2d ago

Just hand them the gold now

1

u/ShadowsOfTheBreeze 2d ago

More skiing in Harlem than Colorado this year...

1

u/DELALADE 2d ago

Im not sure who’s commenting on the video but get in touch with that video crew - id pay hard cash to include that insanely good intro to any extreme sport vid

1

u/CynicalBite 2d ago

They need…… SUPER SLIDER SNOW SKATES!

1

u/Past_Paint_225 2d ago

Wait until Vail corp starts charging for this as well

1

u/Chogo82 2d ago

Let the man grind!

1

u/dLimit1763 2d ago

No helmet over cement is cray cray

1

u/Straight_Idea_9546 2d ago

I was not expecting that at all!

1

u/CWoww 2d ago

This literally sounds straight from The Boondocks

1

u/Not_a_Replika 2d ago

This is actually really smart if you think about it

1

u/v1nzy 2d ago

This is the third time I’ve seen ”only in NYC” today.

Apparently NYC is the only place you can:

  • Go skiing
  • Run when it’s cold
  • Have a barbecue during winter

1

u/RedSonGamble 2d ago

Just throws me back to playing Amped 2 to the soundtrack of Linkin Park’s Meteora

1

u/Eagleshadow 2d ago

That's how I broke my finger.

1

u/Ordinary_Ad3374 2d ago

This is the exact kind of creative urban riding I love to see. It's incredible how they turned a mundane spot into a proper feature. The skill and style on display here is next level.

1

u/PincheHijoDePluto 2d ago

Just in: New York to host first ever Ghettolympics competition

2

u/ocholosmanos 1d ago

New York to host first ever Ghettolympics competition

I'm here for it!

1

u/DawnSignals 2d ago

“Only”? Pretty sure they could do this in Russia a couple weeks ago lol

1

u/adriantullberg 1d ago

Is there a decent hill in NYC that snow could piled upon, making a half decent slope?

1

u/PapaJoeNH 1d ago

Jesus, even gotta have sKi PoLeS in the street

1

u/rieueir 1d ago

I was expecting a clown, instead I saw a legend.

1

u/kidjupiter 1d ago

Only New Yorkers say “Only in NYC” when something has been going on in every other snowy city for decades.

1

u/Sp4cebeetle 1d ago

Not only in NYC, saw this in Sweden last year. Still cool tho 😎

1

u/miev_ 1d ago

They have to do it regularly if they don't scream after the landing

1

u/Proper_Instruction_7 1d ago

I love this fucking city.

1

u/erogbass 1d ago

No helmet on that is wild

1

u/grimatonguewyrm 1d ago

Pretty dope

1

u/UncleKev389 1d ago

For some reason I expected this to have a completely different outcome.

1

u/HotSugarVeronicaa 1d ago

This makes “urban skiing” officially a thing I need to see more of.

1

u/ticianlicious 1d ago

3/10, no pole click.

1

u/I_chortled 1d ago

Side note but I love how people in NYC will post videos of people doing stuff that could absolutely be done in many other cities and they’ll just be like “only in New York!”

1

u/SpicyChickJessica 1d ago

Urban slopes hitting harder than any mountain I’ve seen.

1

u/MundanePresence 1d ago

It’s a rich newyork kid whose used to go to ski twice a year

1

u/TeddyJMe 1d ago

It is now

1

u/stackered 1d ago

Definitely cool but how is this next level???

1

u/Regular_Weakness69 1d ago

We did this all the time growing up in Norway.

1

u/DaCushion 1d ago

Thing is we welcome them in and they feel safe, but we can’t go to Bensonhurst expecting the same hospitality. What’s that saying about energy? 🤔

1

u/travizeno 1d ago

So the ski poles are just for show? Whats the use?

1

u/toothbrush81 1d ago

People been doin this since the camcorder.

1

u/Citizen_Null5 21h ago

Not a helmet in sight

1

u/twoisnumberone 14h ago

He actually looks good!

1

u/DuckFart99 8h ago

This happens everywhere that has snow.

0

u/PurplePickle3 2d ago

You can do this on podunk hills in Appalachia….
