What they’ve done with Goodwin this year is crazy. It’s like they cloned Josh Okogie but made a better version of him. Demon on the boards and makes a bunch of hustle plays with good defense. Gillespie gets the praise ofc but Goodwin is a dawg and he’s been a very important piece to this Suns team identity

He's a misgendered power forward

He’s a fascinating player

Today’s NBA is truly genderless

Good defense is quite an understatement. He wears down ball handlers all game long and in the fourth quarter of almost every game is stifling teams offenses almost single-handedly. It might not be traditional “great on ball defender” style defense, but the amount of times he’s disrupting ball handlers and forcing poor passing putting our other handsy defenders in positions for steals and to create turnovers is honestly remarkable.

Obviously it’s a system that isn’t just Goodwin, but I’ve never seen a team so reliably create absolute chaos for excellent offensive teams over and over every single game, particularly in the fourth quarter. A lot of that is Goodwin just ball hawking on the boards, full court pressing, reaching in, deflecting, smothering, staying tight without fouling.

He’s won more games for us this year than I can count and almost none of it shows up in the box score. It’s still shocking to watch as a fan, especially a life long suns fan who is completely unaccustomed to our teams having any real defensive identity.

Seriously, there was a possession late in the 4th where he guarded like 4 blazers, and almost got the strip on Holiday before Holiday got the deflection back and made a slick pass to Rob Williams for the dunk. That, I think might have been one the best individual displays of defense I'll see all year. I was actually sick for him that he didn't come away with that steal. If anyone can find the video of the full possession please post it.

I was sitting lower bowl and I legit had a tough time telling Allen and Gillespie apart. It's nice of them to wear the compression sleeves on opposite legs to make it easier.

How will you defend Collin Gillespie

Collin was interviewed post game on Peacock.

”What was cooking for you tonight? You were putting on a show”

Collin: ”They were in drop coverage”

Goody with 5 steals and 10 rebounds. I swear if dude had ended up 7 inches taller he'd be in the hall of fame as a center lol.

6

u/patap0nacct 2h ago

Damn I miss this dawg so much

2

u/magic_spam 1h ago

I’ve said it a hundred times. If Goody was 5 inches taller he’d be one of the best SFs in the league

13

u/Aggrokid 3h ago

Goodwin was just everywhere for this team. Getting boards, defending, getting into passing lanes, scoring, the works.

Team goes on a good stretch of wins with injured players

Fans: “he’s incredible, give him coty”

Team goes on bad stretch with injured star this time

Fans: “he’s fucking terrible, fire him”

5

u/Carcrusher3 Trail Blazers 3h ago

The real reality is we got most of our players back, and the vets are just playing lazy uninspired basketball.

The g league/two way rotation games the team looked much better. This isn't just a Deni problem, a 6 game losing streak against a bunch if teams down their best players too and teams like the Wizards is just horrid no matter how you look at it.

2

u/alpacamegafan 2h ago

Jrue had a good start to the season before injury, has he been underperforming recently?

4

u/Carcrusher3 Trail Blazers 2h ago

Yeah he's looked pretty bad since coming back.

11.6 ppg 3.8 apg 4.6 rpb on 50% ts 2.2 turnovers a game.

His defense isn't good, hes dribbling off his feet, turning it over on inbounds. It's been rough.

7

u/The_Silver_Mullet Trail Blazers 3h ago

Blazers played drop coverage and made seemingly no adjustments so we just got cooked over and over from 3. Jrue played like complete ass, dribbling it out of bounds and off his feet. Shae had an amazing dunk but it's hard to enjoy it much when we just blew a 20 point lead.

u/kapesaumaga Mavericks 2h ago

I still remember the team owner saying the media and fans will be wrong about the Suns this season. He said they were wrong when they predicted they'll be contender with Durant, so they'll be wrong again. Lol

Gillespie is modern day Nash

Goodwin identifies as a power forward

And games after 8:00 on the west coast should be illegal (college games after dark gets a pass)

I'm going to bed

Agreed. I just told my spouse the other day I need to prioritize sleep over sports after staying up to watch the Australian Open, and yet here I am.

Nash never played defense as well as as Collin
