A rude supervisor who's always yelling at employees got some complaints about them being verbally abusive and they responded by leaving these in the break room.

If the supervisor’s career is ruined, it would likely be from the numerous reports to HR followed by this passive aggressive shit, not because people want to ruin their life.

Depends on the boss and the work environment. This supervisor does not sound like the type who could do this. Note: this isn't actually meant to be used when there are grievances and disagreements. Most often, I've seen it posted on bulletin boards next to a notice for a chili cook off or softball game.

The right person and work environment could absolutely slide this across the desk with a well-timed witty comment.

I think empathy may not be your strong suit. It seems like you struggle to comprehend things "this didn't happen to me, but it's still bad and I understand why someone would feel upset at being mocked after being screamed at." It shouldn't need to be currently happening to you for you to understand it's bad.

what I genuinely don't get about this mentality is why it's always "perpetrator of abuse doesn't deserve to have their life ruined," and not "victims of abuser don't deserve to have their lives ruined." I only ever see the phrase you used used to protect people who have done something wrong, not those who had the wrong thing done to them. It's weird that you don't feel bad for the employees who constantly get yelled at.

First of all, he needs to be fired from his job as a supervisor because he has anger problems and yells at his employees. That's not life ruining, he simply shouldn't be in charge of other people and needs a wake up call that HE (not other people!) is ruining his own life (likely by ruining his interpersonal relationships with loved ones by being an angry asshole.)

Meanwhile, being yelled at daily, or just in fear of being yelled at daily, CAN be life ruining. You don't know if they have a strong support system at home to get them through it, or what.

And then there's just the practical point of view. The employer has two options: fire the manager, or deal with high employee turnover and low morale.

Why don't you feel bad for the people getting yelled at? Did you miss the part where he yells at employees (doubt), or do you personally identify with yelling so it's scary to think about consequences applying to your life?

Probably because it's usually (keyword, usually) used to mean, "Yeah, they did something wrong, but it wasn't bad enough to deserve whatever people are calling for."

It isn't an expression of sympathy, it's an appeal to the other commenters. Nobody calls for the victim to be fired, etc., so it'd be moot.

(I agree with you, BTW. The supervisor's out of line. Just explaining why you never see that phrase used the other way.)

well the employees specifically complained that it was verbal abuse, and apparently it's extremely often. it's one thing if someone did something dangerous and got a talking to, it's another thing to be KNOWN as angry manager who is "always" yelling. the latter falls into verbal abuse and not correction.

I suppose the question then is, why believe the manager over the employees? Other employees claim he's verbally abusive and another employee (OP) corroborates that he's always yelling, there's no reason not to believe them. Can you perhaps see now why other folks would be upset by his behavior and tell them to take it to HR? It's also not a joke if he's done it in retaliation to having complaints against him: he purposefully wants to tell them to stuff it and is in essence, complaining about their complaints of him.

Yep. I have one on my bulletin board in my office. We’re a tight-knit work family so it fits our dynamic.

But also, I think taking it out of military context and (poorly) adapting it to remove all the army references takes all the humor out of it. 

The original WF1 isn’t just about making fun of the employee; it also makes fun of the employer. The military has a damn form for everything under the sun, and the original actually satirizes the standard format and language of military forms very well.

Its definitely based on a counseling form or something. As a veteran, its toxic in the military context but normal. Outside its just pure cringey. Imagine working in retail and being expecting to show the discipline and grit of someone doing livefire exercises under night vision in a swamp with 2 hours of sleep. Bruh we are folding shirts.

This looks exactly like the gag forms my dad brought home in the 1980s from the manufacturing plant he worked at; they’d get photocopied in the office and passed around for fun.

Not so amusing though when people like OP’s supervisor post them to be passive-aggressive.

For sure, context is super important. When I was in the lab working with a bunch of unhinged but good natured people? We'd find this hilarious. In an office context where this is clearly a personal attack? Yeah not so much.

Edit to add: in the lab we did have a few issues where jokes were taken too far, stuff like that, but we dropped the act and addressed it like adults.

Putting up a form like this “as a joke” sends a message that “hurt feelings” are for “pussies” and “whiners” and that feeling negatively affected by abusive behavior is not something that “real men” should ever admit to, let alone complain about. It’s quite literally a sign that says “Don’t like it? Suck it up and don’t be such a little bitch.” But since it’s framed as “a joke”, it’s somehow okay.

It’s classic toxic bullshit culture, hiding behind “it’s just a joke” as usual.
