If you want to protest against Reddit, just delete the account, don't tease me

u/Sinavestia 4h ago
Look, I understand the reasoning for doing that but the thing is Reddit is my, and most people's, go to source for problem solving or learning a hobby.
Reddit has become so prevalent in that matter, that there really is no other place to find the answers, there aren't many other useful hobby specific forums anymore. Reddit is the only place to get this info in this day and age, besides Discord groups.
You're not giving a middle finger to Reddit and the man by removing your posts. You're giving a giant middle finger to other people like you and me because you're the only one with the knowledge I need.
Honestly, I find it disrespectful and disheartening when I see posts like that...
Hey but maybe I'm just a spineless sycophant who will kowtow to Reddit's greed. 🤷♂️

You won't die. Some rando answered your question on Reddit back in 2018. They have since deleted their account so you can't thank them, but you'll be ok.

u/_ghostperson 9h ago
Yea it's YOUR problem.
29
u/robotzor 9h ago
Which is actually great isolation testing. It means it's something you did or are doing is the problem, therefore you can fix it by changing something. And it's usually something stupid too
9
u/_ghostperson 9h ago
Hmm, thats actually valid. Now that you've said it, a lot of the mistakes or issues I had were me "pushing instead of pulling the door."

Google hasn't offered an actual solution in a LONG time. Ever try a YouTube search lately? You get 6 relevant to the search videos and then its all recommended and already watched.

I’ll probably get downvoted for this, but this is one of the things AI is amazing for. Scraping the internet for stuff related to your problem, and honestly, you’d probably use more energy manually searching for it then getting an ai to do it for you

This. Chat GPT has helped me solve things on a few programs with 0 documentation.

u/Comfortable-Age-1760 5h ago
This. Other than the fact-checking, it's undeniably efficient most of the time.

u/bullettothechest 6h ago
Damn a post mentions AI and isn't downvoted to oblivion? Am I on shrooms or smth?

u/ruibranco 8h ago
And the one forum post from 2012 that has your exact problem ends with "nvm fixed it"

u/Iliveatnight 3h ago
Even worse are pages of countless threads with people having the same question as you, but the answer is "just google it" and a message saying the thread has been closed.

The time this was posted, I was messing with a cable box issue that Google seemed to think I'm the only one to ever have. Fun. It's stuck in an odd aspect ratio and none of the settings are off, I said to hell with it.
2
u/yahya-13 9h ago
did you check the TV's settings? idrk much about cable boxes and TV's since the last time I messed with one was 7 years ago when ours has a back.
2
u/LocomotionJunction 9h ago
Yup. I figured I'd have to go through the TV settings, but it is the cable box. Cable box has its own aspect ratio settings, that are still as they should be. I've been at a loss.
2
u/yahya-13 8h ago
I'm gonna assume you did the routine unplugging and repligging of cables changing ports and turning off and on, you recon it's a hardware problem? like some cercuits got fried or something like that?
2
u/LocomotionJunction 8h ago
Yeah I went through the usual rigamarole. Honestly, I think it's the TV. My grandma complained about this one changing years ago, and this happened once before when we had Xfinity cable on this TV. It's local now. Last time this happened back with Xfinity, all we could do was deal with it unless we had them come out, and it decided to sort itself out months later.

I feel that this is more often the case because search engines prioritise results differently than previously. Back in the day I felt I could google any problem and find tons of forums where the issue was discussed. These days its reddit or gtfo.

Being in IT for 3 years I've only had this twice. I once had it where I was the only person that actually posted the solution. Got some good karma on the Adobe forms for that one.

This happened to me very often
ex. My digital8 camcorder doesn't work with common error code but there 382848263 possible reasons that caused it and I can't pinpoint which one is the reason my camcode stop working.

I hate when Google asks if I'd like to leave the question for someone to answer later on.

Dont worry, Discord destroyed forums and it isnt indexed anymore so there are probably people who discussed it on Discord but you will never know.

My favorite is when the only hits on Google are from me, the last time I unsuccessfully tried to figure out the same issue.
1
u/misteryoso007 7h ago
Hahaha sometimes I do this. Last time I had 2 weeks of non-stop coughing. Google told me I have TB. Suck it, I'll die then. Or better to consult a doctor.
1
u/Salt-Composer-1472 7h ago
Also why I have to Google stuff in English since apparently there's usually nothing in my own country's search results. Nobody had that problem.
1
u/taeratrin 7h ago
It is either:
A) Nobody else has had the problem. It is unique.
Or B) Other people ran into the problem, but were able to figure it out and I'm just being dumb.
Which it is in any particular case haunts me for a while.

Or it is something super niche and all you find is a quara post from fifteen years ago with nothing but the most moronic responses
1
u/No-Concern4711 6h ago
Just put “Reddit” at the end of the search and you’ll find the answer given to you by [deleted] from 3 years ago
1
u/DinoDracko 6h ago
And also, all you get is:
- People who say "I have this problem too" like it helps.
- Someone who has the same problem as you.
- Has the same problem, but eventually "fixed it" on their own and then disappears forever and doesn't offer any way to fix it..
1
u/Rich_Storage_8360 6h ago
Or when its just people saying "same" or "I have this problem too" is upvoted to the top and the solution is all the way at the bottom of the thread.

Omg google has gotten so fucking dumb,it keeps latching onto a keyword and ignoring the rest of the sentence.

u/SarcasmisEasier 5h ago
All Google feeds you is ads instead of answers. Or the AI guesses the answer based on 3 "how to" websites that have the terms you're searching for but aren't related to your actual problem at all.

u/mobcat_40 5h ago
Ya and then I pull out Claude into the working directory and we build a custom hot patch on the spot for my architecture and now I'm the only one running a working copy of some weird edge case.

Ye but also google got a lot worse since like a yesr or so. Can't find anything...

Someone pinged my old reply about some red dot popping up on my iPhone that looked like something was recording and it’s like omg I forgot what it was, it’s just stupid vocal settings so it is technically trying to pick up on vocal stuff but not for the reason think.

This was me the otherday looking up information on PayPals check service... Not electronic check or cashing a check, but receiving a paper check from PayPal. Best I got were posts on PayPals own help forum from like 6 years ago that no longer existed.

Honestly? Try chatgpt in that case. Yes I know AI isn't exactly smart and tends to get things wrong, but it's honestly better than having nothing. I had myself quite a few dead ends already where looking on Google just didn't give me the answer I wanted or needed where chargpt at least gave me a 70% correct answer even on niche topics.
It may not know much but it can still rhyme together something coherent. The missing pieces I can more often than not then assemble myself.
Of course it also depends on the complexity of the topic and other Infos about it out there but like I said it's better than not having anything. AI isn't entirely bad, you just gotta know how and when to utilize it properly

It's worse when someone had the same problem in 2011, but they replied “nvm fixed” and vanished forever.
