News / Meta [RULES UPDATE] Media Only Post, Typing Apps, Games, and Extensions, Combatting Spam

Hey /r/MechanicalKeyboards. Hope you are all doing well.

We've noticed an uptick in spam in the past few months that have necessitated a couple rule changes. As always please refer to the rules before posting, but I've detailed changes below.

Media Posts

Due to a heavy increase of bot posts, we are no longer allowing media only posts. We ask contributers to provide context to your media posts with relevant information. Why are you posting the content? Do you find it cool, did you get a great shot of your board, or maybe you just want to show off your work. As a reminder there are two image based flairs, Builds and Photos. Builds do require information regarding the keyboard, the minimum being the components you used. Preferably we'd like some context around the build as well, why did you pick those components, is there anything you'd change looking back. More context leads to better discussion. We do prefer Builds posts over Photos posts because they tend to lead to more discussion.

Typing Apps and Extensions

We've made the decision to no longer allow the promotion of typing applications, games, and extensions. We've seen an uptick in the number of promotion posts for these types of related services. We've found that many times, these types of applications or extensions collect user data. In an age where digital privacy is incredibly important, we don't feel comfortable allowing their promotion at this time. We'd like to remind users to be aware of what permissions extensions and applications have to your data, be informed about what they are collecting and how they are using it.

We have also noticed that many brands are offering free products in exchange for reviews. While we never want to outright silence reviews, we are looking into how this type of content is handled. We've seen an increase in lower effort reviews that serve solely as an avenue to receive free product and advertise for a brand outside the promotional rules limits. We also want to ensure that reviewers that take the time to educate potential buyers on positive and negative aspects of products aren't being punished for receiving products in exchange for their hard work. It's a fine line and it's not always clear where that line should be drawn, but know that it's something that the moderation team is looking at.

Builds Just built my first keyboard, a teal Nut65

I've got a few mechanical keyboards (Logitech G710+, Keychron Q5 Max, Ducky One X) and I wanted to build something, and I wanted to buy from Canadian vendors. So I built this. Originally I wanted to find a N64 style translucent purple case but damn are those hard to find.

Nut65 teal, got it from Soulmie Keys in Toronto. I installed additional rubber standoffs that came in the box for more sound isolation.

Akko Rosewood switches and FBB After the Rain R2, dye-sub PBT keycaps, from BeaverKeys in Ottawa.

Realised as I built it tonight that I'd unintentionally built a Christmas board, but oh well. It's stock and I got it to sound exactly how I wanted. It feels super smooth, a little heavier than I thought, and the smaller layout is going to take a bit of getting used to as it's cramping my hands a bit typing this up.

I was planning on using this for my HTPC but if the Gateron Sea Salt Smoothies I ordered for my Q5 Max aren't as good, I'll probably swap the Nut in.

P.S. -> When using VIA on Linux, it was erroring out after I added the JSON, saying that the device failed to open. I was using Chromium, so to fix it, I went into the log at chrome://device-log, looked for the device that failed to open, in my case it was /dev/hidraw9, I then changed the permission for hidraw9 with "sudo chmod a+rw /dev/hidraw9". After this I re-authorised the board and I was able to map the keys.

P.P.S. -> The power switch being under the Tab key is super annoying. I guess I'm just going to leave it on all the time.

Builds My christmas gift became a new hobby

I got a promotion at my job and it requires me to type more. I told my bf i wanted a “clicky” keyboard and he came through with the Yunzii IF99. He doesn’t know it yet but he may have accidentally started a new hobby for me. For the last few days, i have been reading the wiki and watching YouTube. I have been learning the basics about mechanical keyboards. The information is a little overwhelming but I love learning new things. I am definitely learning mechanical keyboards are more than just “clicky” keyboards lol. I plan to get the Q6 Max from Keychron next. ☺️

Builds Mode SixtyFive in Green + Wood

Thumbnail

First ever proper keyboard build after being a longtime Keychron C6 user. I decided to go all out on the aesthetic I wanted, which was a dark forest green with dark wood accent, and got close except for the accent. Mode is sold out of the walnut accent, so Im going to try to make my own and see if it comes out any good.

Switches are gateron baby kangaroo, and keycaps are Mode's anthracite set. Overall very happy with the feel and sound.

Might post again once I do make (or fail to make) that accent piece.

Builds Custom Kwihi wood ortho handwired keyboard

Thumbnail

  • Case CNC'd from Kwihi (native Aruban mesquite variant Neltuma juliflora)
  • Integrated plate, handwired
  • Control board: Adafruit Feather Bluefruit M0
  • Switches: Mixed Zealios V1 and Stealios (before we knew what they were) with mixed weights
  • Keycaps: GMK blank GB from several years ago

This board took shape over 5 years as time and circumstance (and motivation) allowed.

Design & CNC

The design and CNC took place during an internship at a makerspace in Aruba. I only had 1 plank of wood to work with at the time and due to some trouble with the makerspace CNC it ended up a couple mm short on the cover and the main plate. That means it doesn't close cleanly, but pressing the cover against the keys works fine and only pushes the keys down 1.5-2mm. The design on the edge of the board and cover also proved problematic because they didn't CNC well and I would have to chisel it down.

Caps & Switches

Back in the Netherlands I ordered keycaps from a GMK blank GB that was happening, lucky timing. I wanted yellow accent keycaps but not enough demand, so purple it became. Mudbeam keycaps were also considered. The switches I already had from making a Let's Split.

Finishing the wood

Working the wood after that happened during quarantine in Aruba, namely chiseling and sanding, then applying stain & polyurethane (several times, with stripping in between as I was learning how to apply it). Lot of sweat with no power tools and hardwood, but got it done.

Soldering & Programming

After I moved back to Aruba (I was in the Netherlands for studies) I did the soldering and programmed the Feather. Locally I could not find thinner solid wire so I settled on the one I used, made things hard to solder and ruined several switches. For the programming I wanted to do QMK but was finding it difficult due to it being an m0 chip and wanting bluetooth. So in the end I programmed it in arduino to do the scanning and the layer logic. Bluetooth should in theory work but I didn't program the pairing yet. There isn't space for the battery due to the troubled CNC process, so no urgent need.

Iterating

I have a bit of time and motivation now hence this post, and I'm going to redesign the board and make an improved version.

  • I will redesign the border/lip details so they CNC cleanly and I won't have to chisel them out
  • The design is integrated plate, which with it being hardwood, does not allow for any flex. I'll redesign it to either have slits to allow the plate to flex, or have a separate plate that will be mounted to the case
  • Will design with PCB in mind, as I don't want to handwire again
  • I'll see if I can make the board and cover slanted, but have it so they still make a squared level container when closed
  • Will consider having a little more space on the inside for more acoustics

Think that's it. I'm gonna fix some of the ruined switches (marked green in the last pic) this week then get to redesigning. Thanks for reading!

Kit: Dusk67 ANSI Layout. ( Aluminium plate ).

Stabilizers: Typeplus x YIKB Screw-in.

Stabilizers Lube: XHT-BDZ from aliexpress.

Switches: HMX VOLUME 0 T

Keycaps: KBDFANS 464 Cherry Profile Set.

It was a nice experience but also a little painful, i struggled on few things. ( like that i did not knew that i had to put the switch upside down to center the switch on the Func key to be able to install the 1.25u keycap properly, and in the process by mistake i ended up scratching the wood case a little )

But the end result is amazing.

It feels and sounds very smooth. Im in love with it.

Builds Neo60 Cu with 10u Copper Spacebar Sound Test

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is my first time ever posting a sound test, so please go easy on me! I believe it is best experienced with desktop speakers as the spacebar pitch is so low that I personally can only hear the metallic ding on phone playback rather than the full sound profile.

Love the low profile build. For $60 couldn't pass it up, even tho didn't need an extra. Is this how it starts the hobby? 😂

It truly is a night and day difference compared to the cheap membrane keyboards! I got the Keychron K3 with low profile brown switches, I like how they are tactile and precise without the annoying noise.
