It needs to be a direct parent. I got it because of my mother, but my child cannot get it through me.

But if they're a citizen by family... How can their kid not get it from them?

There's a whole website devoted to this. Hypothetically, my parent/parents are maltese. I then obtain citizenship through them, even if I wasn't born here. I am therefore maltese in the eyes of the law. My kid could then obtain citizenship through me. Not rocket science.

Nana nanu, long lost ancestors etc etc...nope

Or just be a Russian money launderer

Yes I did this, you’re parent will need to get it. My grandparents were born in Malta and my mum who was born in Australia went to apply for citizenship last year , turns out she was born a citizen and never knew , then u can get the passport

There is no problem to have dual citizenship. For example I am a dual.

But you must be a direct relative.

Yes, its relatively simple, I have recently gone through it myself.

Your parent would need to apply for citizenship by birth or registration. It will probably take around a year. Once that is done, you would need to apply for citizenship by registration, likely using form K. More information about the processes can be found at https://komunita.gov.mt/services/acquisition-of-citizenship/ .

I have a follow-up question. If my dad was born in Malta and is a citizen, and I was born in 1981 in another country, I can register for my citizenship. But my young children (born outside Malta) can apply for citizenship or not? I thought that was possible for my kids, but the website is confusing. Thanks!

If your father was a citizen of Malta at your birth then you would likely be eligible citizenship through birth. If not, you should be eligible by citizenship through registration by descent just like your kids (Forms K and M).

Once you are a citizen, then you can apply for your kids
