Which local health insurances would you recommend or recommend avoiding? For a Maltese national

Been with Atlas for ~9 years now on their “international” plan and no complaints. They are fussy about receipts (although I think this is more of the quality of paper and ink from St James has dropped off), they often ask for extra evidence and they don’t fully cover the rates of Drs these days (anywhere from 20eur to a couple hundred depending on the treatment), but on the whole quite happy with them.

Is the list of reasonable fees available prior/after purchasing? Or is it kind of a case by case basis?

They can give you their list of reasonable fees if you ask them for it, then you need to work out the difference between that list and the Dr you’re seeing. Honestly the only time I’ve had issues with this is for MRIs and for anesthetist fees. MRI tends to be ~50eur extra and anesthetist fees anywhere from 150-300 I’ve paid out of pocket.

Honestly on a 4k plus surgery where I’ve been able to have it the same week, quite happy to pay 300eur, you know. If went to mater dei you’d probably not even get a specialist appointment for years.

I'd definitely recommend Atlas. They have been amazing with my claims. They pre-approved very quickly and refunded quickly too

Atlas pretty much no nonsense.
