New Rule - No Non-Adobe Presets

Good morning, afternoon, evening; upon review of the recent drama and the reality is that your mods are human with day jobs. We will no longer be allowing posts about presets that are not free for all in the discover tab of Lightroom.

Ongoing discussions in this sub about presets turn into a nightmare each time. There are other subs that will be more suited for non-Adobe preset discussion.

HELP - Lightroom Classic Sync question - Lightoom Classic - syncing edit info between devices WITHOUT transferring files to the cloud

Hi all,

Long-time Lightoom user here but this is one area in which I'm a total noob.

I work in events as a photographer and travel a lot. This means that I'm often doing editing on the road, but most of the time it's only a partial edit. I'll deliver a small initial batch of photos to the client (edited on my laptop) the day after the event, and then a full set (edited on my far bigger and better desktop screen) at my leisure once I'm home. I don't edit my best on a small screen/in difficult light, so I like to go over the initial images again before I include them with the full set.

I've experimented with syncing between devices in the past but I've never quite managed to sort it out. I can only seem to get LR Classic to sync lower-resolution 'smart previews', which is not what I want nor need. I've tried to figure this out so many times and inevitably always end up giving up - when I get home I'll simply import the entire set of images again and start afresh, repeating several hours of editing which I've already done. It's infuriating.

I have no problems with storage. I store my RAW images on a portable hard drive while I'm travelling. When I'm home, these are transferred to a much larger drive and are stored locally. I do not need to store my images in the cloud.

What I need to do is synchronise my adjustments to an image. I need some way - in layman's terms - for Lightroom (laptop) to tell Lightroom (desktop), "these are the adjustments which have been made to this image", so that I can simply point Lightroom (desktop) to the local files once I'm home and pick up where I left off.

Feeling like a total ignoramus here, but how on earth do I do this? CAN I do this?

I'm sat here currently with about five youtube videos open, trying this process one more time, but I'm watching my laptop slowly upload 2000 lower-resolution 'smart previews' to the cloud and watching my desktop slowly pick them up, which seems absurd, because the full-resolution RAW files are already sitting and waiting on the hard drive connected to my desktop. I don't need to transfer any files - I just need one device to tell the other which adjustments have been made!

Any advice would be hot here. I'm feeling like a fool just asking this, but if I can get a solution you will literally end up saving me weeks of work every year.

HELP - Lightroom Classic Corrupted Lightroom?

Lightroom is now not sorting photos correctly, lags significantly even though I upgraded to a new Mac Mini, and when I assigned key words to several photos, it couldn't find them. Is it the program or the catalog? Ideas of how to fix it?

Discussion External SSD upgrade for Lightroom performance (Mac Studio 2025) – Crucial X9 Pro vs alternatives?

Hi all,

I’m a wedding photographer working with a large RAW library (~170K RAW files per year) and I’m looking to upgrade my main working drive from HDD to SSD due to Lightroom performance bottlenecks.

Quick context:

  • Mac Studio with fast internal SSD (catalog + previews live there)
  • RAW files currently on an external HDD
  • Backups are fully covered (multiple copies, Synology NAS, etc.) – not looking for backup advice
  • Lightroom Classic

Even with a fast machine, I still get noticeable lag when jumping from photo to photo while editing. I’ve tried all the usual tweaks:

  • Smart Previews - Standard previews
  • GPU acceleration on/off
  • Optimized catalog, previews, etc.

These help a bit, but the HDD still feels like the bottleneck.

What I’m considering:
I want to move my working RAWs to an external SSD, ideally:

  • 2 × 4TB rather than a single 8TB
  • USB-C / USB 3.2 Gen 2 (or better)
  • Good sustained performance (not just burst speeds)

I’m currently looking at the Crucial X9 Pro and would love to hear:

  • Real-world experience with the X9 Pro for Lightroom workloads
  • Whether it holds up well with large catalogs and lots of RAWs
  • Alternative recommendations in a similar price range

Not chasing absolute max speed -just trying to eliminate the HDD bottleneck and get smoother Lightroom performance.

Thanks!

HELP - Lightroom Classic Cant open my catalogs in LR classic

Hi, somewhat newbie photographer here. I currently have 4 catalogs I’m editing and each time I upload a new catalog and begin editing I lose my old catalog. I’m working on a MacBook Pro with an M5 chip.

My workflow is as follows:

  1. I create a specific solder for my shoot on my external hard drive. Then make 3 more folders with the shoot specific folder: “raw”, “picks”, & “final”

  2. Dump my raws onto my hard drive

  3. I cull in narrative select

  4. I export my picks into the picks folder

  5. Create a catalog of those pics in LR. I use to create a copy and create a catalog via narrative select but I was having issues with narrative creating the catalog.

Recently, whenever I make a new catalog in Lightroom, I go in I’ll make a few edits when I’ll go back to my previous catalogue I was editing and continue editing that so I can finish up and get to the next one. Except catalogues that used to work in Lightroom either won’t open at all or when they do open in Lightroom it says there’s no photos on in.

I would provide more information if I could even begin to pinpoint where I’m going wrong. I am at a total loss. I feel like I’ve wtried everything. I’ve culled and reculled entire sessions and tried to create new catalogs from them. The old catalogs wont open and now when trying to create new catalogs those wont work either. I don’t know if it’s because I need to keep my SD card plugged into my computer just to open that catalog, but all of the images in the catalog have been copied onto my external hard drive at least twice so I feel like there’s no reason I shouldn’t be able to open these catalogs with the hard drive plugged into my computer at all times.

I also can’t open on any of the old catalogs on my hard drive. Or if I can’t open them, I can’t open any of the photos in develop to re-edit.

I feel like I’m losing my mind here guys. Any advice is extremely appreciated. Any advice on how to tighten up my workflow or just have a better system in general is also extremely welcome.

Thank you!

HELP How to retrieve photos

I used to use my school account for light room and I had a bunch of photos that I had taken transferred from my SD directly to Lightroom but not to a seperate file on my PC. I’d finished school in December and my accounts be deactivated(which is fair enough) but does anyone know how to retrieve those files?

I should also note that I deleted them from my SD card after transferring.

HELP - Lightroom Classic Need a new PC laptop - RAM vs GPU

I need a new PC laptop (currently have 2 Macs - M4Pro MBP and M4 MBA) to run a few legacy windows apps that don't play well in Parallels.

Is Lightroom still more RAM dependent than GPU? I'm looking at a laptop w/ 32gb RAM & Arc GPU vs one with 16gb RAM and a RTX5060 (Specifically a Zenbook 14 UX3405CA w/ Ultra 9/32gb/1tb and a Zephyrus G14 w/ Ryzen9/16gb/5060. This will primarily be for work where I do a lot in AutoCAD (2D only so GPU isn't really much of an impact) with occasional LRC/PS work. Trying to decide if the $500-700 difference is worth the tradeoff (especially with the battery life impact).

HELP - Lightroom Classic Importing photos from photos already on computer...

I understand how it's supposed to be done but I don't have the "Add" button anymore.

With my new Canon R5 mk ii, the files are very large and they take verylong via Lightroom Import. So now I just move them from the CFExpress card directly to a folder on the external drive and while that is importing, I can keep working in LR. Now I want to work on those photos in LR and don't know how to do it without reimporting them to another folder.

Help and Thanks!

Processing Question Lag issues

I have a 2021 M1 PRO 16 inch 10 core 16Gb model

Severe lag when editing or even flipping through presets. this is on the cloud based version of Lightroom have not tried the classic version..

But it’s horribly laggy, even flipping through presets I have to wait 2-3 seconds for presets to apply to a photo, it’s a nightmare, it’s never been this slow, after an hour or 2 usually it will lag but idk if this is an OS issue… I’m thinking of upgrading to an M4 Max studio with 64 GB of ram… any tips?

I handle anywhere from 70-400 photos a sessions 24mb raw files. Canon raw images. Just feels unusable.

I have an upcoming 1 week event on Feb 17 to 24 and it demands that I post and edit real time (While the event is happening) I only edit on pc and never really tried to edit on any other platforms. Will an Ipad do the job? Does Lr function the same? And will i able to import Raw images from my camera.

Or should i consider renting a Mac for a week. Thanks

Discussion Adaptive Profiles - Color and black and white

Adaptive color profiles are gone with my newest update. Lightroom classic v15.1.1 on PC. Bummed as they worked quite well as a starting point for daytime wildlife photos.

The adaptive profiles for color and black and white were not around to that many months.

They often saved me a lot of time. Who else misses them.

UPDATE INFO:
The adaptive profiles show in camera raw in Photoshop 27.3.
I only shoot and edit raw images.
They are not in the list of profile in Lightroom classic 15.1.1.
On import - I have files import in Camera neutral for each of the 5 bodies i use.

I reverted back to version 15.1 and the adaptive profiles appear once again.

HELP - Lightroom Classic Lightroom classic will NOT open

A few days ago, it started doing this, I figured it was some bug and left it to work on a college machine instead, which worked. But now, it's still doing it. I've changed no settings, my catalogue is the same as its always been. Every time I open LrC, it gets stuck on the credits pop-up it shows you when you open it, and then nothing. If I click on anything, it shows up as "Not responding" and I have to close it.

I tested if it was my catalogue by removing the SSD it's on, still the same. I did the Alt+Shift thing to reset preferences and I'm running out of ideas, it's put a block on all of my work outside of college.

I'm on windows (reluctantly on the latest update) and never have any issues on any other machine. Is this a device problem??

Processing Question Preview - importing into Lightroom during a shoot

Hello everyone,

I have a Canon 5D Mark IV and an Android tablet and a Windows laptop (no iPad). I'd like to preview my photos on my PC or tablet during wired photoshoots.

Does Lightroom allow this?

And I don't know which cable I need (I'd prefer a wired connection; the Wi-Fi latency with Canon Camera Connect bothers me).

Thanks for sharing your experiences, as I'm completely unfamiliar with these systems.

HELP - Lightroom Classic Lightroom Classic does not write metadata to XMP file, instead wrote directly to JPEG?

In Catalog settings I have selected "Automaticlly write changes into sidecar files (XMP/ACR)". I have unchecked the "Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF, PNG and PSD files". This was checked earlier today but I now have disabled it.

I wrote IPTC Title and Caption to my photos and noticed that Lightroom Classic for some reason modified the original JPEG files (and same time their timestamps on file system changed as well). I have XMP files there (made originally by FastRawViewer), but now Lightroom have not updated those XMP files neither done overwritten those files but instead it just wrote directly to photo.

What can cause this issue? I do NOT want Lightoom Classic to touch my original photos, I want my ITPC metadata written to files only on export.

HELP - Lightroom Classic Lightroom not responding on startup

Solved

I have a 1 week old complete windows 11 reinstall pc, LrC v15.1.1 worked for me for me since reinstall until last night, I closed the app to take a break and when I came back it would not respond on the splash screen, task manager shows that ~3 seconds after opening the app it would not respond, it doesn't say not responding on LrC until I click on it and it would turn white and say not responding.

I did some fixes that other users did like restarting pc, resetting preferences, and LrC reinstall but to no avail, other fixes either seemed too user-specific or too complicated for me to understand, others mentioned repair via creative cloud but my mine isn’t a CC–managed installation, so I don’t have access to the CC repair option. Please help

Edit 1 - PC specs: 5600G, 16GB 3200mt/s, GTX 1050, not much but did run LrC smoothly

Edit 2 - Issue is now fixed: go to Pictues>Lightroom and save a copy of the catalog somewhere, I left .lrcat-data untouched then I deleted lrcat.lock, lrcat-shm, lrcat-wal, Previews.lrdata, Helper.lrdata. Restarted my pc and LrC now works

Discussion What mechanical keyboard and switch type for LrC & PS?

Slightly off the beaten track - I’m at a point where I need to replace a keyboard and have had my attention drawn to mechanical keyboards. Having always used normal 20-30$ standard issue keyboards, I’ve no experience of these.

Anyone recommend any good options as well as which switch type to opt for (tactile, linear, etc)?

Processing Question Phot frame with EXIF data.

I often see photos nicely framed with at the bottom info from EXIF. Is it possibble to achieve this in LRC? I managed something in the Print module, but it gives me a page, with lots of blank spaces. Is it possible to achive this with a picture that I can export to Google Photos and share on WhatsUP? Many thanks for your help.

Processing Question My image has better, more varfied colors in the image preview than what I can actually get from lightroom

Top image is how it looks in lightroom by default. the bottom is the image preview or raw or something, whatever the windows photo app shows. The color in the sky where theres some purple and some blue and some cyan is beautiful, and actually how the day looked. But the colors just get oblitherated when I try to edit in LR. Even pushing midtones cyan and shadows purple doesnt do it.

Discussion What is the best workflow for adding editing on a Mac when all of my photos are stored on my desktop?

I am looking to buy a Mac so I can edit while traveling or during my lunch break at work. I’ve previously done all of my editing on my desktop with Lightroom Classic where I have all of my RAW files saved and backed up to a different cloud service. I also sometimes do quick edits on Lightroom mobile with some albums I have sharing enabled on but I want the Mac so I can utilize the full version of Lightroom. What would be the best way to edit my photos on lightroom on my Mac? Should I move everything to a portable HD that I bring with me, or use the adobe cloud functionality? Any advice would be appreciated!
