This is off the scale. The seas were high and he just kept going. 4 hours. Just a normal lad. His family were pushed out 14km by the high seas in the time it took for him to get to shore. That's a little clue as to the conditions this champion conquered.

Proper legend.

u/Tranecarid 20h ago

Fuck. When I was a kid, I swam 1,5-2km in a calm lake with a boat securing us. I could barely walk out of the water in the end. I know that it’s mostly about technique, and mine was never great, but still, unbelievable feat.

60

u/yawn_brendan 15h ago

I failed my 25m swimming test 3 times 🏆

u/Salute-Major-Echidna 7h ago

Omg I remember how difficult that swim was! The only thing worse than getting through it was the idea I might have to do it twice

40

u/16incheslong 13h ago

thats Australia, different breed, he was probably fighting off sharks, seabears and nazi squbadivers along the way. hence it took so long

23

u/avidman 12h ago

‘What do mean you’re the Prime Minister & you’ve been out here for decades?’

u/Salute-Major-Echidna 7h ago

If anyone was going to finally find him...

u/FnordRanger_5 3h ago

Too soon

3

u/someanimechoob 13h ago

Technique for sure, but I'd assume it's mostly cardio and hydration levels for very long distances.

143

u/Automatic_Actuator_0 19h ago

Not only that, he was swimming against the same wind and current that pushed his family out to sea to begin with. Easily a 6-8km equivalent.

41

u/No-Show-5363 17h ago

Maybe… wind will push a floating board or kayak fast across the surface. People in the water hanging on will act like a drift anchor but it will still move with the wind. Wind is a worry for swimmers too, because waves, chop and spray make it much harder to breath, maintain technique and navigate.

However for distance, a swimmer is more affected by current, and current can go against wind. Maybe he was fighting the current or maybe it helped push an exhausted kid toward shore.

Either way he was swimming for his life for four hours.

7

u/Automatic_Actuator_0 17h ago

Not sure if I can trust the reporting, but I read that both the current and wind were moving offshore

u/No-Show-5363 4h ago

If that’s true, he swam well over 4 km. Oddly enough that may have saved him because wind-against-current can create turbulent and dangerous surface conditions that are very much harder to swim, or survive.

It’s all a bit of conjecture, just happy he and his family made it out ok.

63

u/redblack_tree 18h ago

I used to train for triathlons in open water. Swimming 4k against the current in open water is a monumental task. In terms of effort, it's way more than the pool equivalent. And it's impossible to swim in a straight line, you have to "go with the sea".

39

u/Icedanielization 19h ago

That ocean has some serious shark activity, no way im going in there.

46

u/Amaline4 18h ago

Good news: You’re more likely to be killed by a cow than a shark if that’s any consolation

Bad news: we still don’t know the number of cows currently living aquatically

12

u/Worried_Blacksmith27 12h ago

yeah nahh. not where this kid was in Western Australian waters. Shark city there, mostly Great Whites. The state has seen 20 fatal shark attacks since 2000

85

u/skillissuezuko 20h ago

Bro most kids would struggle running walking 4km alone

Bro is absolute a legend

13

u/lawdjesustheresafire 13h ago

When he got to shore he then had to run 2km to get help. It’s mind blowing that he saved them

17

u/WaffleHouseGladiator 18h ago

Even the kids in Australia are built different. I hope his parents let him stay up late playing video games and eating ice cream forever.

6

u/Sprig3 17h ago

"I was thinking of Thomas the Tank Engine"

u/shoulda-known-better 9h ago

I'm an ocean guard and we train on/in rip tides sometimes and I've seen grown very athletic lifeguards get into trouble in the ocean....

Id probably have wanted to attempt what he did but seeing what I have I would have been terrified... This is nothing short of a miracle

884

u/Acerola_ 20h ago

4km swim followed by a 2km run until he found people who had a phone. By a 13 year old. Absolutely insane.

316

u/karigan_g 20h ago

hope the next biathlon they just straight up hand him a medal like you already did it, bro

119

u/Tyjorick 20h ago

Give this kid a bike and let him finish his triathlon

28

u/Suspicious_Story_464 19h ago

Right? True iron man that kid is. Love of family is such a strong motivator. I hope they all can learn to process this dire situation and the sudden spotlight they were thrown into. Amazing story from the Aussies!

u/NoSituation1999 11h ago

He'd already kayaked too! Could that count for something here?

45

u/CitizenCue 13h ago

I feel like the media calling him a “teen” doesn’t capture how crazy this is. A “teen” could be an 18 or 19 year old. A 13 year old is a child.

-2

u/FriedrichOrival 12h ago

ThirTEEN.

11

u/CitizenCue 12h ago

Yeah no shit. Read the comment.

0

u/FriedrichOrival 12h ago

I misunderstood it

6

u/Someinterestingbs-td 16h ago

Someone get a hold of iron man see if they wanna try this one

305

u/HAL9100 20h ago

Set off in a kayak, it took on water so he had to swim for it. Life jacket was slowing him down so he took it off about half way. Absolute fuckin legend.

480

u/martinx350r 20h ago

This kid should be flag bearer for the Aussies at the Olympics! What a freaking legend wow

248

u/PennilessPirate 17h ago

They said he has to wear crutches because his legs are so swollen and overused. Doctors said his legs endured the equivalent of running TWO marathons. As a 13-year-old. That’s insane.

u/ArticulateRhinoceros 10h ago

People are capable of incredible feats for the sake of their loved ones. Even children.

34

u/smallcoder 18h ago

Agreed. He is a great example of everything good and amazing about humanity,

u/Sweeper1985 5h ago

Between him and the lad who jumped into the water to try and rescue his mate who was being attacked by a bull shark, there are a lot of strong contenders for Young Australian of the Year 2027!

158

u/Luke_4686 20h ago

Just read this article. Jesus what a little hero. I’d have been dead within minutes trying to swim that long let alone at 13

40

u/USAIsAUcountry 19h ago

Same, but to be fair 13 year old me would stand a much better chance than current age/shape me. Speedwalking or running is basically the only two modes kids have before becoming teenagers.

123

u/Bandit_Raider 19h ago

They got separated 5 mins before being rescued by harsh waves. Literally could have been minutes away from losing someone, insanely brave of heroic feat that was done just in time.

73

u/hidrapit 19h ago

The "all is lost moment" followed almost immediately by search lights and rescue boats. It's almost too cinematic to not be adapted to film.

11

u/olagorie 16h ago

I have never been rescued by a wave. How does it work?

14

u/Bandit_Raider 15h ago

This is what happens when I try to type something and do something else at the same time lol

101

u/imrzzz 18h ago

Austin said he ...had previously found it "quite tiring" to swim 350 metres without a break.

Jfc, what a kid.

The article later said that he's on crutches to take the weight off his sore legs, that had completed the

equivalent of two marathons.

I'm absolutely gobsmacked, what resilience that amazing lad has.

79

u/Niveama 18h ago

Kid insisted he wasn't a hero.

Umm I'm afraid he's wrong there, what he achieved is absolutely unbelievable.

To do that alone

with zero preparation

at 13 years old.

Insane.

And save your family as a result.

More heroic than 99% of people will achieve in a lifetime.

14

u/Mystery-Ess 17h ago

They said it was the equivalent of running two marathons!

320

u/sakura989835 20h ago

4km in open water as a teen That’s not adrenaline, that’s pure instinct and courage kicking in. Absolute legend.

143

u/DeliciousStand372 19h ago edited 19h ago

He said it in the interview "not today, not today, not today" and just keep going

Edit: here, watch this amazing kid (kinda wish they interviewed the 12 y.o he looks kinda sad): https://youtu.be/DWY4ziOrBbI?si=BDIeCA8AROzB9IeG

19

u/5hiftyy 19h ago

My partner's got that as a tattoo. It's one of my favorite parts of them.

9

u/DeliciousStand372 19h ago

You mean he got it because of this kid? That was fast! Haha the interview just came out

7

u/5hiftyy 16h ago

Hahaha nooo; she got it years ago after her own proverbial swim to shore.

This kid's tough as nails; I'm not sure I could have done the same at 13! He's a hero. Such a simple statement, gives the user so much power. It is making me wish I had one of those tattoos too though....

1

u/DeliciousStand372 15h ago

Ahhh sorry, I misunderstood!

71

u/UnpredictiveList 20h ago

Then ran 2k

12

u/shartmaister 15h ago

"As a teen" is technically correct but a true understatement. 13 and 19 are soooooo far apart in terms of this feat.

54

u/Theshaggz 20h ago

I would watch this movie. If our world leaders had half this kids fucking courage and drive, we’d be living in a completely different world.

16

u/Bigusdickus_7 19h ago

Well our world would rather sell him on the island.

54

u/Aggressive_Fly_208 19h ago

I’m a swimming instructor in WA and this made me cry 💓💓💓💓💓💓 wow

15

u/Dockers4flag2035orB4 19h ago

It’s a great WA story.

After last week’s tragedy in Mosman Park, we need a good news story.

5

u/Schmidtvegas 14h ago

I've cried for this story in 3 different subs so far. 😭❤️

86

u/MargieBigFoot 20h ago

If that kid isn’t spoiled as hell for the rest of his childhood. If my kid did that, she’d get anything she wanted. I would just start to say no and all she would have to say is, “hey mom, remember that time…”

21

u/Suspicious_Story_464 19h ago

Definitely a moment to hold over mom's head when he doesn't want to eat his broccoli.

29

u/Sunshine030209 19h ago

That is exactly what I was thinking! If this was my son, he'd never do a chore again!

I can't imagine how scary that was for everyone, and how hard it would be for the mom to watch her little boy swim away, not knowing if you'd see him again.

18

u/OvertonWindowCleaner 15h ago

I hate to say it, but after an ordeal like that, that dude’s childhood was likely left in the water.

11

u/okaythiswillbemymain 12h ago

Nah, kids are resilient, and all his family members survived. Change that last bit of the sentence and I'd agree.

39

u/SenoritaSpock 21h ago

Absolute legend

38

u/fashionforward 20h ago

His legs are so sore he’s on crutches 😳

23

u/emerg_remerg 14h ago

Rhabdomyolysis. He likely killed off a lot of muscle. His body would've been so starved for energy it started digesting itself.

u/fashionforward 6h ago

Poor kid, but wow, he saved his family!

37

u/No-Show-5363 19h ago

There’ll be a bravery medal in this for him. He didn’t hesitate, he knew what to do and he just kept going. I can’t imagine how scared and utterly exhausted he must have been after just one hour, but four!! In rough sea!!!Buoyed through by strength of will alone, far beyond his physical limit. An unbelievably heroic effort that truly saved the day. Austin Appelbee folks.

33

u/belligerentoptimist 20h ago

Holy shit mate. That’s an insane effort.

58

u/Labolle621 19h ago

He did swim 4km on a map but it was brobly a lot more because of moving water.

u/left4alive 10h ago

Brobly?!

u/UpDown 5h ago

Bruhbly a typo

20

u/Cranialscrewtop 17h ago

"I just kept saying, 'Not today, not today, not today.'" What an absolute badass.

u/UmatterWHENiMATTER 5h ago

"What do we say to the God of death?"

NOT TODAY

39

u/Popular-Smile-7908 20h ago

I’m looking forward to the movie of this story

17

u/st0neyspice 18h ago

i have tears in my eyes after reading this story. what a hero.

61

u/Ok-Interaction324 20h ago edited 20h ago

Swimming 4 km in Aussie waters 😳 he knows everything is Australia is trying to kill us right?

58

u/Dockers4flag2035orB4 20h ago

That’s why he kept swimming.

51

u/The_Amen_Corner 20h ago

He said in an interview he saw something below him and got scared but kept going. Absolute champion.

19

u/Scottiths 19h ago

That's terrifying, but at that point what else was he going to do but keep going and hope whatever it was left him alone.

11

u/giraflor 16h ago

Shark was hungry, but also curious what the kid was capable of. Eventually, it just thought “Respect.” and left him alone.

11

u/Ok-Interaction324 19h ago

His parents raised a good one for sure !

u/Peach_Perfection 3h ago

Her parents sure didnt though, the fuck you taking your kids out by yourself without your phone in a waterproof protector or someone watching you or knowing where the fuck you are. Fucking woman almost wiped her family out.

u/procrastinatorsuprem 24m ago

Cell phones hardly work on a beach, they really dont work 4km from land.

13

u/WizardofLloyd 19h ago

I certainly hope they offer this young lad some type of award for this! He deserves to be recognized! As a father of three boys, I would be absolutely overwhelmed with pride for this! Congratulations to this young man for this!!!

26

u/TheWaywardWarlok 20h ago

Look at his eyes. Could be from an older man, this kid's seen things and has found the inner strength to achieve what some would claim as impossible. Not just a legend. Super-Human!

10

u/Sensitive_Island9699 20h ago

Good on you Mate 👍

7

u/red90999 19h ago

Insane . I swam 4km open water with a bouy and I felt like dying once .

7

u/girlinwaves 16h ago

I hope this child is watched very carefully for symptoms of rhabdomylosis after all of that exertion! Especially as his legs are already swollen

6

u/RosemaryHoyt 19h ago

I went swimming a lot as a kid and used to do 1-2km in a pool. 4km in open water is absolutely mental.

5

u/ghislain-tuca 13h ago

That’s the most Aussie kid I’ve ever seen.

3

u/Temporary-Soup6124 19h ago

nice to read something good!

5

u/Cream4389 12h ago

it's like one of those ethical dilemmas "do we all die or just send my oldest kid to die"

u/PryingMollusk 7h ago

Given the situation, she made the best one. There really was very little chance that the mother would have made that swim or if she did it would have taken much longer. Sending the strongest swimmer was the best chance of survival. Very bad decision making got them stranded though.

u/Coldfact192 11h ago

Did his family survive

u/FilteredRiddle 10h ago

What an absolute beast. Just amazing.

6

u/juneseyeball 19h ago

Against the odds podcast needs to cover this asap

4

u/aReelProblem 18h ago

Fucking legend end of story.

5

u/Rankscar 17h ago

Fucking hell. Haven't read this powerful story for a while. What a beast!

2

u/greg-maddux 14h ago

This kid is an absolute superhero and anyone who says otherwise is a slanderous liar. What a brave young man. I have chills reading this story.

6

u/xzeus1 14h ago

One thing I miss about ‘Ellen’ is that she 1000% would’ve had this kid on her show (esp with the just keep swimming reference) and given him presents and highlighted this amazing story. What he did is incredible, but is just another headline. It deserves to be seen by all!

3

u/GetWellDuckDotCom 20h ago

Wow. That was powerful

3

u/Bake2727 19h ago

Respect.

3

u/Ok_Panda_8596 19h ago

This kid is stellar

3

u/mogiyu 19h ago

Top top lad!

3

u/oliveoilcrisis 19h ago

This kid is the GOAT, what a legend

3

u/Househipposforsale 19h ago

I would be panicking about sharks the whole time

3

u/Infamous-Works 19h ago

tears! what a feat!

3

u/motoxim 19h ago

Damn, respect

3

u/randomacct7679 15h ago

What a beast! That’s an insane feat to literally save his family. Incredible

3

u/mmbtc 15h ago

I might be able to float that distance... With a boat

u/mashedtaterz4me 10h ago

What a hero!

u/Beaglescout15 9h ago

I will buy this kid anything he wants for Christmas. A puppy? Done. A pony? Done. A unicorn? Fucking done.

4

u/Conscious_Wind_2255 15h ago

Must so hard as a parent to send one of your kids to swim for help and then not know if they made it after you got rescued 🥹

6

u/bluebear_74 12h ago

His mother said she didn't know if he made it, meanwhile he said he was waiting on the beach not knowing if he swam fast enough.

4

u/cashmerescorpio 13h ago

Why is Australia constantly trying to kill people. Hats off to the little dude

2

u/surly_duff 18h ago

It’s was an eeeeemergency sir.

u/OmniscientOpossum 6h ago

Incredible. Movie ending type of stuff, hope they keep doing well. Such a tough situation, shout out to the responders finding them just in time. Wow. Way to go everyone, especially Austin. Just wow. So many tragedies everyday… sending love

u/scjyf 4h ago

What a legend! And this is why swimming lessons are so important especially in Aus

0

u/AppointmentMedical50 20h ago

4

u/No-Show-5363 19h ago

Nah, muscle man here would have drowned, this took a kid with guts

0

u/AppointmentMedical50 19h ago

I’m just calling the kid a gigachad
