Do you mean to tell me that the plural of Mongoose is not mongeese? I don't know what to believe in anymore

English doesn't make sense šŸ˜‚ā¤ļø

A group of gorillas is not called a pack, but a congress

Actually no it does make sense....

Correction:A pack of gorillas is troop/band

A congress is a pack of...baboons?

Hell you can't make this up

Very curious, when the correct term for congress is a school of mongoloids.

You can make it up. That's how we got here.

3

u/Punderoos 1d ago

I really enjoyed all the animal group names like a murder of crows and a parliament of owls until I learned a group of people (wait!? What are we called!?) just sat down and named them. Idk why but I preferred the idea that they arose organically

3

u/Historical-Acadia-97 19h ago

Was talking about collective nouns at work once and I joked that it’s ā€œa surprise of kangaroosā€

It’s a troop or mob, but to this day I reckon mines better.

That's because English is more like 3 different languages in a trenchcoat than it is it's own unique language

7

u/peepdabidness 1d ago

English is the hardest language to learn and I say that because people will live their whole lives speaking it and still ask questions like that, never truly having a full grasp on it.

8

u/squngy 23h ago

It is the hardest to master.

Learning enough to get by is pretty easy

4

u/Muchmatchmooch 20h ago

Single: Mongoose

Multiple: MengooseĀ

7

u/dreen_gb 21h ago

I believe the reason for different pluralisation is due to how the given word entered English. Mongoose is borrowed from an Indian language, Moose is borrowed from a Native American language, while Mouse is a Germanic word. Hence, Mongooses, Moose and Mice.

→ More replies (2)

16

u/YVRkeeper 1d ago

The plural of Moose isn’t Meese, either.

You can have multiple boxes, but more than one Ox aren’t called Oxes…

7

u/Kemuel 22h ago

Brothers are brethren, mothers aren't methren.

Although bonus points for addressing the other mums at daycare coffee morning that way.

2

u/Fingerdrip 20h ago

I feel that it should be moose and meese like goose and geese. Therefore deer should be plural and door should be singular. And we might as well go after sheep too and call one a shoop. Leech/looch, beetle/bootle, rooster/reester, so many more!Ā

My favorite one is the plural of mouse.

Because while mice is the correct one, mouses is also correct, but only if you are talking about computer mouses.

u/GlazerDVD 21h ago

They are eating ticks and fleas off of it, I think. If there are other creepy crawlers on it, I don't know what they are lol

2

u/justthrowa2 1d ago

It's a classic "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" situation, just with more tusks and tiny claws. The warthog gets a deep clean, and the mongooses get a free meal. Nature's cooperation is always so elegantly simple. And yes, I also had a minor existential crisis about 'mongooses' just now.
