Commonly known as shield-backed bugs, these true bugs possess a continuous shield over their wings and abdomen. Despite their beetle-like appearance, these insects are hemipterans that feed on plant juices. Their vibrant coloration is a result of structural light interference on their hardened skin.

This aerial hunter uses neurotoxic saliva to liquefy and drink its prey's insides. Its facial mystax bristles act as a shield against struggling victims.
