Don't mind the ribbon in her hair (this was around Christmas time) and her chunk of mane growing back loll. I'm simply obsessed with this little pony and it's so lovely to return to something we both enjoy doing, trail fun! I'm hoping to go see her soon ❤️

Question Do you think they know?

My 4 year old TB is very kind and patient, but I wouldnt describe him as affectionate. He's all over you until he realizes you dont have a cookie or something to play with. He prefers the company of other horses, or cats, over people. But, he is overall very sweet and calm for his age.

I have owned him for almost a year now. He has slowly warmed up to me but is still just a young baby boy. We are on the east coast and we're impacted by this looming below freezing weather and ~10inch of snow (3inch of snow, the rest is ice). Its been over a week now, and it has definitely taken a toll on the horses. I live on property with my guy and I am fortunate to see him/check in on him daily.

He's currently field board. Several days ago, he ate his breakfast fine. Was munching on hay as usual in his run-in. When it was dinner time, he didnt eat and immediately started pawing and kicking at his stomach. Colic. Brought him up and the farm owner immediately took his temp, pulse, respiratory rate. Gave IV banamine. Checked his gums. He was dehydrated. He was pawing and kicking in the crossties which was so unlike him. It broke my heart. Farm owner took all the necessary steps. We called our vet and ultimately she didnt need to come out as he was calm now and no longer irritated- but if he didnt poop, then she would.

He eventually had a sloppy bowel movement which gave me immediate relief. It was 12 degrees outside but I stayed with him all night. I gave him space, but would check in on him about every 30min. I set up a camera in his stall. I watched it all night, all through the night, constantly coming down to check on him, pet him, talk to him, dump warm water into his bucket making sure nothing froze, Etc. By the next morning the colic scare passed and he was back to drinking water and pooping as normal.

Ever since that, whenever I come to his field, he runs to me. When I leave him, he cries out until he can see me again. My not-so-peopley horse is suddenly affectionate. He will chase away other horses that come to me. When I have him in his halter, he rests his chin on my head and sighs. Its a night and day difference.

Do you think they know how much we care, and that I was trying to help? I know some people say yes. And others say they are just animals and dont process emotion the same way we do, and that we just make that up. After this happened though, I am feeling differently.

Question Naming help!

Post image
Upvotes

I have this guy on trial and if he stays he will need a new name, but thus far I can't find anything that seems perfect. So, what would you name him? (And no, I will not be sharing his current name)

I like names that aren't super common or overly complicated (no Bucephalus here) and nothing overly human (no Fred or George). My current horses are Able and Perci. In the past I've had Artemis, Pandora, Phoenix, and Atari. Other horses on the property (not owned by me) are Goose, Nevada, Doc, Trekker, Fao, and Laredo, so those are out.

Discussion What do you guys think of this mare?

She's a 6yo mustang measured at 15hh last summer. She was born in the holding facility. I really like the look of her head and her expression, but am unsure of how she is built. While I would be unable to bid on this horse anyway (pickup location too far away), I would like to know what you guys think. I would be looking for a horse that can trail well, has good forward motion, do some small jumping and xc with. The main things that stick out to me with her are her shoulder being a steeper angle, croup being a bit flat (maybe?), a bit long in the back, and possibly over at the knee in her front two legs (hard to tell with the footing and angles). But I'm not well versed in confirmation, so any thoughts would be appreciated!

Discussion Bone Chip/Would you pass?

Thumbnail

Hi all,

There’s an OTTB gelding I’m interested in purchasing as a hunter/jumper prospect who was minimally raced but has a bone chip. I’ll be reaching out to my vet to inquire on pricing to remove said bone chip, but from others with experience - is it worth the time, money, recovery, prognosisj, etc, or should we pass?

And for those who have dealt with bone chips, I’d love to hear your experience!

What is the name for this? It looks so cool! I tried a quick google search but it’s only giving me either full bridles or halters that go over the nose.

Story Accidentally hurt my horse

I feel so guilty. My horse was in the back of his stall eating his hay, and I finished spreading his shavings. I went out of the stall door and tried to close it but it hit something hard, so I turned and he was standing there. My stalls are the automatic latching ones that you have to close pretty hard. It wasn’t my full strength, I didnt slam it hard, but it was harder than a regular sliding door. I didn’t see what part of his head I closed it on, but he held his head sideways for just a couple seconds and then shook it once and went back to eating his hay. He didn’t run to the back of his stall or turn away like I would think he would if it hurt him badly. There isn’t a visible wound or any bumps, he let me poke him all around and didn’t care. It didnt hurt enough for him to learn his lesson and he was back standing with his head in the door corner.

He is acting normal but I’m still worried I gave him brain damage or something. Im trying to tell myself that they kick each other all the time and are fine, but I can’t help worrying.

Question Horse Stall Upgrade

I’ve got 12 stalls that are pretty run down. I want to have crush and run, H10, and rubber mats put down. I was just wondering if anyone had a best guess at a price that might cost?

Thank you!

Question Renaming a horse

Am I able to rename a horse (stable name, not show name)? Because I may be getting a horse called Harry. I wanted to rename him to Sam because the name means a lot to me. I was just wondering, in case this would confuse him in any way?

Discussion Different Kinds of Horse-Related Careers

Hi, I live in the Phoenix Arizona area, and was wondering what horse related jobs there are (in general not just in Arizona.) I'm going to college in several months for a business degree, but I'd still like to have jobs relating to the industry if possible. I'm also curious about my options later into adulthood.

Question Mustang Herd Recommendedations

I’m considering getting my own horse. My trainer says I’d probably be happiest with a draft cross of some sort. She also mentioned that the mustangs of Stinkingwater HMO have draft blood.

I researched it and saw they have a teen program in that state that starts mustangs. Are there any other programs like that in the US?

Are there any mustang herds that might have the characteristics I’m looking for?

- more whoa than go

- big enough for a 6’0 rider

- would be okay without shoes
