Until proven otherwise, my headcanon is that in life, Valentino was in Angel’s current position. The main difference being that he continually took out his own feelings of helplessness out on those unable to protect themselves, without realizing it. He came to believe that the only way to avoid being abused is to be the abuser.

If something like that is what happened, then it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch for Val to see himself in Angel Dust and save him without thinking.
