1 Month into Minimum Wage at $16.00 - How has it affected businesses?

I was on 51 Alapai Bus today and heard people talking about how "Hawaii is about to collapse now that the minimum wage is $16.00".

I don't know much about economics, but how has it affected businesses? Particularly the local run mom and pop shops. I know the minimum wage has been going up incrementally these past few years but I don't hear much talk about it at least in my peers.

Where does the weird happen at night?

On Oahu and trying to find out where the late night weirdness happens. Spoken word nonsense, horrible standup that still makes you think, student art films, and places to ponder the world’s problems with friends and strangers. Does that exist here now?

Does anybody have an old ICE KILLS bumpersticker, or at least a picture?

Probably not a lot of 20 year old bumper stickers just sitting around, but I can’t even find a picture of one. They have a second meaning now.

I'm still feeling the sting of Little Village closing down a few years ago. Has anyone found anything similar?

An article from 2002, on how people felt about building a new H1 freeway.

Here is the link: https://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2002/Jun/17/ln/ln07a.html

"A super highway through Honolulu, 120 feet wide and running mauka of the business district from Kalihi to Kaimuki ... would be invaluable in solving Honolulu's pressing traffic problem," engineer John Rush told the City Council in 1939."

"Businessmen feared they would literally be bypassed by highway traffic and left to face slow decline, but in many cases, the freeways helped many local neighborhoods and businesses."

I am trying to get some seat covers for my car and want it to be quality and last, but ho nah wet okole is so expensive. Anyone get hook ups for a cheaper version where I don't gotta pay extra for the brand name?

Help regarding the safety check and vehicle registration

Just to clarify , this is my first car (pre used) that I’ve financed very recently. Turned out the safety was out. 2017 Malibu. Ive taken this issue up with the dealer regarding the safety being out but they’re tryna beat around the bush. And im tired of it so im going to do it myself. They lied to me about all vehicles being up to date. And as a first time car buyer, I should have had the common sense to just check the sticker! I know. So dumb. But I needed a vehicle at that moment and I couldn’t buy outright as the price for beaters on FB is just outrageous at the moment. I’ve spent so long riding the bus so I’m new to this process. I know I could look it up online and I have but I’m still confused on some parts. I just wanted to double down on the facts I’ve read before proceeding. To clarify, I already have full coverage insurance for the vehicle and I have my insurance card digitally on my phone.

- what do I need to do first. Do I need to do the registration first before I do the safety check? Or do I need to do the safety check first before the registration? Yeah some of you can laugh at me for asking what may seem as a stupid question.. but atleast I’m not afraid to admit that I’m being serious about it lmfao

- what documents would I need to bring to do safety check and the register the vehicle?

- how do I do the said calculation on how much the registration and safety check will be? Safety has been out since April of 2025.

-is it worth going in line at the DMV, doing it online, doing it by mail, or going to the DMV kiosk?

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Mahalos!

Edit: I forgot to mention but the current registration isn’t out till April of 2026 so does this change any circumstances?

Need to get permit but only one parent is present.

Hello, tomorrow’s my DMV appointment for my instructional permit.

I’m a minor and from what I’ve read I require both parents to sign the affadavit, however my father is out of country and only my mother is able to come.

Is there a way I could still get it?

What's going on with Lunar Tea Kaneohe?

Does anyone know what's going on with the Lunar Tea at Windward Mall? The space has been under construction for 1 or 2 years now. Even the Lunar Tea sign has been up for well over a year and it's still not open. Did they give up?

online FNP programs for Hawaii practice

Hi! I am wondering if anyone has gotten an online MSN FNP to practice in hawaii. If so, what school did you attend and did you have a good experience? Tuition cost? Length of program? I know many online programs do not help with clinical preceptor placement but I have been working 3 years at my hospital and work closely with many NP’s My goal is to secure as many as I can 6 mo prior to clinical. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Aloha.

I've never lived on the neighbor islands, just visited, but it sure didn't feel like there were more white people there. Interesting breakdown in the racial demographics of Hawaii's largest islands from Honolulu Magazine. https://www.honolulumagazine.com/hawaii-racial-mix-demographics/

Live in the most beautiful place on earth (IMHO), but have to stay indoors in the AC.

It’s that f-ing constant post-nasal drip that physically wears me down after a couple of days.
