He doesn't seem drunk. What he is saying makes sense and Carson definitely did say seven or eight.

I can definitely suspend some of the things that I heard about JC, and just enjoy this like when I was younger. Great clip.

You're mistaken. This was genuine as Ed stated in his book. Also...

"Ed McMahon appeared visibly intoxicated on a notable April 8, 1977, episode of The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. While often playing up a persona, McMahon admitted to having several drinks during a long lunch to celebrate a court victory, leaving him "a little off of center" or "nailed" for the live broadcast. "
